          The 2001 musical-comedy film Josie and the Pussycats was based of the popular comics series created by American cartoonist Daniel “Dan” S. Ang Tsampiyon Komiks ay unang lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Marso 30, 1957. Sa unang tatlong isyu ay wala pa itong pangalan, at ang makikitang pamagat nito ay ? Komiks. Ang tandang-pananong – “?” – ay ginamit bilang isang paanyaya sa taong-bayan. Nagkaroon ng patimpalak upang hanapan ng pamagat ang komiks na ito, kung saan ang mapipiling pangalan ay magwawagi ng 200-pisong gantimpala. Ang napili ngang pamagat ay “Tsampiyon.”

Sa Tsampiyon Komiks lumabas ang “Lemuria,” isang makasaysayang pagtatambalan ng dalawang “alamat” sa larangan ng komiks na sina Nestor Redondo at Tony de Zuñiga.

          Sharon Stone became known for her portrayal in the film Basic Instinct (1992). Do you know that she was only paid 75,000 dollars for her role? On the sequel made 14 years after, Basic Instinct 2 (2006), however, her talent fee rose to a staggering 13.6 million dollars.
          In 1995, Stone won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture for her role as Ginger in the Martin Scorsese film Casino opposite Robert de Niro. She was also nominated for the same role in the Academy Awards. 1887 – The Noli Me Tangere (Latin for “Touch Me Not”), Jose Rizal’s first novel came off the press.
1942 – The Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon (HUKBALAHAP) was established in Nueva Ecija with Luis Taruc as supremo.
1969 – The New People’s Army (NPA) was established in Tarlac by Jose Maria Sison and Bernabe Buscano. It was initially composed of former members of the Hukbong Magpapalaya ng Bayan (HMB) and recruited youth and student activist. It later became the military arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
1988 – High-ranking leaders of the NPA, Romulo Kintanar, Rafael Baylosis, Benjamin de Vera, Maria-Gloria Jopson Asuncion and Mario Asuncion were captured.

          Ang “Ukala (Ang Walang Suko)” ay nobelang-komiks na isinulat at iginuhit ni Alfredo Alcala para sa Pilipino Komiks (1952-1953). Ukala ang pangalan ng pangunahing karakter ng nobela na isang katutubong American Indian noong panahon ng pananakop ng mga Europeans sa Central America. Si Ukala ay “walang suko” (Paunawa: ang pakahulugan ng salitang “suko” rito ay “katapat,” “tayog” o “sukdulan”) na nagpapahiwatig na ang kaniyang tapang at galing ay “walang katapat.”
          Isina-pelikula ito sa titulong Ukala (Ang Walang Takot) ng Sampaguita Pictures sa ilalim ng direksiyon ni Artemio B. Tecson at itinanghal sa Center Theater noong Mayo 22-31, 1954. Itinampok si Cesar Ramirez bilang Ukala. Katambal niya si Alicia Vergel bilang ang kaniyang kapanalig at katipan.

          The French science-fiction comic book, Barbarella, was originally conceptualized by Jean-Claude Forest for V-Magazine in 1962. Later on, Barbarella was published into a comic book by Eric Losfeld.
          The character Barbarella is a woman who has many adventures, mostly sexual, in her travels in space. The story around Barbarella is a rare mixture of science fiction and erotica.
          Do you know that in 1968, it was made into a film starring Jane Fonda as Barbarella? The film had English and French versions. In the French version, it was Fonda herself who said her lines in French.
          In the said film, Barbarella made a striptease in zero gravity, whereupon viewers could almost see Fonda naked. Kylie Minogue also used the iconography of Barbarella, and the zero-gravity striptease scene was duplicated in her award-winning video for the song “Put Yourself in My Place” (1994).                              o     O     o

Ang Tsunami

          Alam niyo ba kung paano nabubuo ang tsunami? Ang tsunami ay sunud-sunod na rumaragasang daluyong ng karagatan (traveling ocean waves) na nalilikha ng paggalaw sa ilalim ng karagatan na dulot ng lindol, pagsabog ng bulkan o pagguho ng lupa sa ilalaim ng dagat, o ang pagbulusok ng isang bagay katulad ng malaking tipak ng bato mula sa mataas na bundok o ng meteorite mula sa kalawakan sa ibabaw ng karagatan.
                                                          o     O     o

          Mula ang terminong “tsunami” sa salitang Hapon na ang ibig sabihin ay “harbor wave” o “daluyong sa pampang.” Ito ang ibinigay na tawag ng mga mangingisdang Hapon sa mga mapanirang alon na sumasalanta sa kanilang coastal communities. Subalit iba ang tsunami sa tidal wave. Ang tsunami ay hindi lang isa kundi sunud-sunod na daluyong na rumaragasa sa bilis na 400 hanggang 600 kilometers per hour. Ang tsunami ay hindi “rolling waves” at hindi surfable. Kung magtatangka ang isang surfer na sumakay sa tsunami, lalamunin siya ng mga nag-aalimpuyong daluyong (turbulent waves) nito.

          Karaniwang ang first wave o unang daluyong ay hindi ang pinakamalaki. Depende ito sa lakas ng pagyanig, layo ng pinanggalingang paggalaw, at lakas ng pagbuwelta ng daluyong.

          Sa gitna ng karagatan, halos hindi mararamdaman ng malalaking barko ang tsunami. Ito ay dahil sa mababa lamang ang amplitude nito kumpara sa mahabang wavelength. Subalit habang lumalapit sa pampang, tumataas ang amplitude ng tsunami at lumalakas ang puwersa.

          Ang pinakamataas na tsunami sa recorded history ng daigdig ay naganap sa Lituya Bay, Alaska, noong July 1958. Isang napakalaking tipak ng yelo at bato ang bumagsak sa tubig at lumikha ng tsunami na may taas na 500 metro (1,640 talampakan).

          Ang pinakamalakas na lindol – Magnitude 9.5 – na naganap sa daigdig noong May 22, 1960, na naganap malapit sa dalampasigan ng South Central Chile, ay lumikha ng isang Pacific-wide tsunami na naging mapaminsala sa malaking bahagi ng Chile at sa ikatlong bahagi ng Pacific Ocean. Umabot ang daluyong nito sa Hilo, Hawaii, sa kalagitnaan ng Pacific Ocean.

          Sa 9.1-magnitude na lindol naman na naganap sa dalampasigan ng Banda Aceh, Indonesia, noong December 26, 2004, isang 30 metro (100 talampakan) na tsunami ang nalikha. Dahil sa tagal at lakas ng pagyanig, umabot ang tsunami sa East Africa, libu-libong kilometro ang layo. Ang Indian Ocean-wide tsunami na ito na kumitil sa buhay ng humigit-kumulang 200,000 katao ang “deadliest tsunami” sa kasaysayan.

           Ang Great East Japan Earthquake na may lakas na Magnitude 9.0 na naganap noong March 11, 2011 sa underwater epicenter na 70-kilometero sa silangan ng Oshika Peninsula sa Tohuko, Japan, ay lumikha ng tsunami na may taas na 40.5 metro. Sa lugar ng Sendai, umabot ang rumaragasang alon papaloob ng kalupaan hanggang 10 kilometro. Ayon sa Japan National Police Agency, umabot ang bilang ng mga nasawi sa 15,854, at ang bilang ng nasaktan ay nasa 26,992. Hanggang sa kasalukuyan, 3,155 pa ang nawawalang biktima. Winasak ng tsunami ang 1,095,195 gusali.

          Sa Pilipinas, ang tsunami na nilikha ng Magnitude 8.0 na lindol na naganap sa Moro Gulf sa Mindanao noong August 17, 1976, ang itinuturing na pinakagrabe sa kasaysayan ng bansa. Mahigit 8,000 katao ang nasawi sa mga coastal communities ng North at South Zamboanga, North at South Lanao, North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat at Sulu Island.

          The Yellow-Crested Cockatoo (scientific name Cacatua sulphurea) is a bird found in the forest of East Timor and in the islands of Selawesi and Lesser Sundas in Indonesia. It is also called Lesser Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo.
          Do you know that the pet bird of Detective Tony Baretta (played by Robert Blake) in the television series, Baretta (1975-1978), was a Yellow-Crested Cockatoo? The name of the said bird was Lessor.
          The Yellow-Crested Cockatoo is a critically endangered species, which is considered in the brink of extinction due to illegal bird trade. Presently, it estimated that there are only about 2,500 birds remaining.
