As the World Grows, Must the Forests Go?

Plus! Vol. 2 No. 15, August 1996

One of those rare instances where my byline was printed as “Ernie” instead of “Ernee.” Well, this is also a rare instance that I’ve written for this magazine. Nonetheless, this article – “As the World Grows, Must the Forests Go?” – talked about the importance of the (rain)forests amid the growing world population.

“For wickedness has become aflame just like a fire; thornbushes and weeds it will eat up. And it will catch fire in the thickets of the forest, and they will be borne aloft as the billowing of smoke.” – Isaiah 9:18, New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.

Math-O'Logics: The Premier Issue

MOD Filipina Vol. 19 No. 835, August 28, 1987
On the cover: Maria Antonette “Monette” C. Ledesma

The first issue of Math-O’Logics. I could say this is a collectible item. It’s my pioneering column, the first column in Philippine journalism history that discusses mathematics. Who would ever thought that a woman’s magazine would venture to publish a math column? But Mrs. Ernie Evora Sioco, MOD’s editor-in-chief, believed in me and gave it a chance. It became very popular especially among students, teachers and professionals. I could even say it “formulated” my path to a second profession – that of a freelance writer.
In fact, Math-O’Logics is the only column recommended by the Department of Education and several schools as a must-read for students. The column ran for more than 100 issues spanning six years.

“To the man with insight, it is all clear; to the well-informed, it is all plain. Choose my instruction instead of silver; choose knowledge rather than the finest gold. I am wisdom, I am better than jewels; nothing you want can compare with me.” – Proverbs 8:9-11, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

The Cherry Hills Killer Landslide: Lessons Learned

MOD Vol. 31 No. 1457, August 27, 1999
Anne Katherine Lacanilao Laserna

It happened 18 years ago. Disaster struck at the Cherry Hills subdivision in Barangay San Luis, Antipolo City. Massive landslides killed more than 50 residents and totally destroyed many houses. A subdivision was built in an area that is not suited for residential purposes, and developers even failed to comply with the requirements of National Building Code.

"Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great." – The Gospel According to Luke 6:47-49, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

What You Should Know When Buying a House

In contrast, this crossword puzzle is probably the last one published by Mr. & Ms. The once very popular weekly magazine became a so-so monthly after the change of editorship. Soon enough, it closed down. I included it here for nostalgia’s sake.

On the covers: Angfourgettables,
Dyords Javier, Isay Alvarez, Pinky Marquez and Mon David (left)
and 1988 Supermodel of the World Marilen Espino

A two-part special report, “Fish Kill, Again” is about an environmental disaster cause by human negligence and ineptness. My editor, Leonila Garcia, allowed a “personal commentary” at the end of the second part, so that I could vent-out my disgust regarding this grave matter.

“For if the word spoken through angels proved to be firm and every transgression and disobedient act received a retribution in harmony with justice, how shall we escape if we have neglected a salvation of such greatness in that it began to be spoken through (our) Lord and was verified for us by those who heard Him, while GOD joined in bearing witness with signs as well as portents and various powerful works and with distributions of holy spirit according to His will?” – To the Hebrews 2:2-4, New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.
