So they will bring quick ruin on themselves.” – 2 Peter 2:1, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 20 No. 8, June 25, 1996
On the cover: A rare occasion where Regine Velasquez and Kuh Ledesma
are together in a cover page.
Note: A typographical error on the date makes this magazine “valuable” for collectors.

Although published six days after the 35th anniversary of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal’s day of birth, it is always very interesting to recall his love and romances.

“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these GOD will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for childhood and youth are vanity.” – The Book of Ecclesiastes 11:9-10.

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 21 Nos. 9 & 10 (June 24 and July 1, 1997)

I have written several articles on the perennial problem of the Philippines – floods. This one, “Here Come the Floods” (published in two parts), I wrote 20 years ago. Imagine, up to now, the problem still has no solution on sight.
The adjoining article, pertinent to the occurrence of floods, is about a health problem that continually afflicts the Filipinos – “Leptospirosis.”

“The LORD watches a man’s ways, marking every course he takes. He who is wicked is caught in his own iniquities, held fast in the toils of his own sin; for want of discipline he will perish, wrapped in the shroud of his boundless folly.” – Proverbs 5:21-23, The Revised English Bible.

Celebrity World Vol. 5 No. 254, June 24, 1996
On the cover: Hans Montenegro and Pinky Amador
The romantic side of Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was featured in my article “The Two Endearing Love of Dr. Jose Rizal” (p. 8) for Celebrity World June 24, 1996 issue. For all of his romantic encounters, read “Love and Romance According to Jose Rizal” published in Mr. & Ms. June 25, 1996 issue (SEE succeeding post).

“Set me as a seal upon your heart,
As a seal upon your arm;
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy as cruel as the grave;
Its flames are flames of fire,
A most vehement flame.”

The Untold Story of Karl Marx

Prime Weekly Edition Vol. 5 No. 25, June 21, 1990
On the cover: Marian Espiritu and Paul de Jesus

“The Untold Story of Karl Marx” (pp. 34 & 37) is a research-intensive article about his life, struggle and philosophy. I also brought up the issue that Marx espoused Christian virtues, contrary to what the Catholic Church is branding him, an anti-Christ. That his philosophy attacks not Christianity but the ineptness, inequality, injustice, subjugation, and double standard of morality within the church and the religion of the Aristocrats.

“For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her (Babylon’s) fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.... Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues, For her sins have reached to heaven, and GOD has remembered her iniquities.” – The Revelation 18:3-5, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.

Venus in Transit

MOD Girl June 18 & 23, 2004 issues
On the covers: Cyryl Rejuso (left) and Sandara Park (right)

I was fortunate enough to see the rare and spectacular event known as “Venus in Transit” on June 8, 2004, though just for a very short while because of the cloudy weather. I wrote an article about it for MOD, but it was featured in MOD Girl, albeit in a very girly pink background (Part I, June 18 and Part II, June 23, 2004). It’s quite nice though. Come to think of it, it's Venus, the planet name after the Roman goddess of love, sex and beauty.

“If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” – The Gospel According to John 3:12, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.

Humore & Rage: Brownouts

Men’s World Vol. 1 No. 12, June 18, 1990
On the cover: Former President Diosdado Macapagal

The first of the Humor & Rage semi-editorial column I wrote for Men’s World in mid-1990, subtitled “Brownouts” as was the prevailing news subject of the time. This type of write-up is something I learned from Mr. Teodoro “Ka Doroy” Valencia. I like writing something like this, which is informative, thought-provoking, but with a kick on the side, and I have Mrs. Ernestina “Ernie” Evora-Sioco to thank for giving me the opportunity. She was the one who encouraged me to write it. As it turned out, Mrs. Sioco told me later that I was “highly recommended,” but she declined to tell me by who. It was such an unforgetable memory.

“The quiet words of a wise person are better than the shouts of a foolish ruler. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much good.” – Ecclesiastes 9:17-18, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

Kadyot Pakalikot ni Estong Payatot: Hayop na Buhay

The Daily Sun Vol. 1 No. 80, Hunyo 18, 2013

Collecting Coins

MOD Vol. 26 No. 1189, June 17, 1994
On the cover: Miss Universe 1994 Second Runner-up, Minorka Mercado of Venezuela

A brief article turned 2-page spread, which featured some coins from my collection.

My poem “Man With the Plow” was also published in this MOD June 17, 1994 issue.

MAN WITH THE PLOW

There can be no greater work
Than to serve the fertile lands;
To offer man and his brothers
The fruits – gifts to the callous hands.

There’s no shade under the heat
Nor comfort to the soiled feet.
Yet the wind is merciful;
The springwater tastes so sweet.

Obedient is the black servant,
Endeavoring for a purpose.
Enduring and noble is the tiller,
A worker without repose.

Hardened are the palms,
Endowed with honor and experience.
Scorched is the skin, darkened,
Brown like the soil, hue of reverence.

For every drop of blood and sweat
That falls to the arid ground,
Grains to the future infants,
Sacrifice repaid unbound.

The grains of green are sprouting,
Golden they shall in a week.
Rewards blest with blood,
A task so great, yet so meek.

A determined worker
Who asks but a humble tomorrow.
An awesome task, a simple dream
Of the man with the plow.

Indeed, there are many great heroes
From simple birth or royal spoil.
Yet none more noble and grand
Than the tillers of the soil.

(Slightly altered from the published verses.)

“Everyone who lives ought to be wise; it is as good as receiving an inheritance and will give you as much security as money can. Wisdom keeps you safe – this is the advantage of knowledge.” Ecclesiastes 7:11-12, The Good News Bible in Today English Version.
