          It’s the first of July, my birth month. I’m itching to post something! I thought, it should be something connected to me. Ah yes! The first of my birth month, so I’m posting the covers of the First Issues of my magazine collections.

          I have already previously posted some of them in this same blog together with my collections of Philippine komiks first issues on the particular day they were released.

          Among those published in the Philippines are the following:

MS. CLAVEL (Who’s she?)

          Featured on this first cover of the unique “sneakers” magazine with a twist is a rather equally unique view of model Cristina Esposito’s bosom conspicuously and calculatingly concealed only by Nike “Tiffany Dunk” sneakers. The foremost theme of the magazine is about anything and everything about “sneakers,” most especially the high-end rubber shoes. It also features sexy pictures of women holding or using as props, what else, sneakers.

BALLER

          Cager James Yap on the first cover of this “official lifestyle magazine of the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association). Contains stories mostly about basketball particularly the “what’s going on?” in the PBA.

KUSINA NI MOMMY NATY (Mommy Naty’s Kitchen)

          Featured on the cover is a bowl of the native dish kare-kare, with Chef Thomas “Tom” Ryandyan holding a plateful in the inset. Contains kitchen and wet market tips, dish profiles, and recipies.

Vault (Possibly because it’s a small magazine that contains a lot of items)

          On the first cover of this modish magazine is the Mercedes-Benz 300SL vintage car from the collection of businessman Danding Cojuangco. Contains, well, just about anything classy and expensive.

          It’s the first of July, my birth month. I’m itching to post something! I thought, it should be something connected to me. Ah yes! The first of my birth month, so I’m posting the covers of the First Issues of my magazine collections.

PUMP (I’d love to! Who wouldn’t?!)

          One of my most favorite actresses, Chynna Ortaleza, on the cover of this “naughty but not rude, sexy but not lewd, provocative but not crass....” magazine. Contains sexy pictures, celebrity profiles, sex tips, and an assortment of stories from adventure to health, to sports (SEE more information about it on July 5, 2012 post).

HOMESTYLE (Redefining the Filipino Home)

          Avid art collector Celine Lopez, surrounded by her treasures, on the first cover of this multi-faceted magazine. Contains articles on architecture, interior design, landscaping, food, travel and concepts at views about life, professions and dreams.

PLAYHOUSE (I’m in!)

          There are two first cover for this one-of-a-kind men’s magazine, “The Female Centaur” (portrayed by Claire Barberis), and “Lesbian Lovers” (anyone recognizes the two?). Contains among others unique stories about sex and sexuality. It also contains insights and reviews on gadgets, books,  films and men’s accessories, and never-before featured columns such as Sexopedia and Calvento Files (SEE more information about it on December 8, 2012 post).

Playhouse Men’s Magazine (January 1, 2008).

SPIFF (“Neat and smart,” if you’re ignorant of the meaning of the word.

For this magazine, however, it is weirdly a slang for “incentives.”)

          The first cover (design by Kevin Sabino) of this “call center” magazine I can only described as a quadrantal (tough word, again) collage of, possibly, personalities featured in the magazine’s pages. Contains interesting articles that particularly, but not exclusively, caters to call center workers.

LIBERTINE

          Part-time model and marketing student (at the time), Rachel Mitzki on the first cover of this men’s magazine. Contains sexy pictures, articles relevant to the interest of men in general (of course, but women may find them interesting, too), erotica, celebrity profiles, film reviews, and other human interest stories.

MAGNEGOSYO TAYO (Let’s Do Business)

          The first cover of this entrepreneurial magazine featured sweet delicacies like kaong, saba, buko, beans and ube ice cream, which are the traditional ingredients for halo-halo. Contains profiles of local business ventures, tips, reports, how tos, etc.

          Supermodel Abbygale Arenas on the first front cover of this men’s magazine. Contains articles particularly for men, from cars, high-tech gadgets and guns to good grooming, actions and adventures (SEE more information about it on June 1, 2012 post).

THE GOOD LIFE

          On the first cover of this magazine are “happy” masks, the photo was courtesy of the Department of Tourism. Contains as its subtitle connotes, “brightest ideas, best buy,” trivia, facts, stories, anecdotes, news, and everything else (SEE more information about it on June 5, 2012 post).

TV STAR

          Hollywood actors Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet (a scene in the film Titanic) are on the front cover, and Maricel Soriano (for the Green Cross alcohol print ad) on the back cover of the premier issue of this film and entertainment magazine, and TV guide. Contains celebrity news, profiles, film and television reviews, and program schedules for both free TV and cable (SEE more information about it on December 1, 2012 post).

FHM PHILIPPINES

          Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone graced the cover of the first issue and, on the second issue, Sunshine Cruz became the first Filipina cover girl of this magazine. Contains sexy picture, sex advisory columns, “true” stories and confessions of sexual encounters, and articles on varied subjects mostly catering to male interest and predisposition.

FHM Philippines (March and April 2000).

GM (Short for Gentlemen’s Magazine. I’m certainly a gentleman!)

          On the front cover are the rather interlocked bodies of Stella L. and Monica Montes, and on the flip-up back cover are Mark Anthony Fernandez and Rica Peralejo. Contains sexy picture (some breast exposures and nudes), spicy interviews and write-ups about starlets, and stills of adult films.

GM (Gentlemen’s Magazine, December 2001).

18 (I’m 99.9 percent sure it represent the age)

          Sexy model and actress Tracy Torres graced the front cover of the first issue of this men’s magazine, and Maye Tongko at the back cover. Contains sexy pictures, lists (such as “10 Most Fantasized Female Star”), erotica, trivia, sex jokes, sex-related articles (SEE more information about it on September 8, 2012 post).

          Actress Barbara Perez on the first cover, this magazine contains news, stories and articles about movie stars in particular and the film industry in general (SEE more information about it on April 14, 2012 post).

POGI (Filipino colloquial word for “handsome”)

          I don’t know the name of the lady in the jungle-motif bikini, nor the lion. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it if you post it here. It contains sexy pictures, essays, stories and komiks about sex and sexuality, but not vulgar (SEE more information about it on April 3, 2012 post).

BARAKO (Slang for “stud” like its subtitle, which translates to “genuine men’s magazine”)

          Who’s the woman in the cover? I don’t know. I’ve sold this one already. Contains erotica, articles about and komiks depicting sex.

TOPSTAR PIP (That’s Tirso Cruz III movie nickname during the 1970s)

          Tirso Cruz III, Edgar Mortiz and Vilma Santos on the cover of this movie and entertainment magazine (This was actually my former yaya’s magazine). Contains stories and gossips about, inside and around celebrities, films and the film industry.

Topstar Pip Movie & Entertainment Magazine (December 28, 1970).

Focus Philippines

          This magazine went into circulation just a few months after the declaration of martial law, with its cover (raised hand with a broken chain) and featured article (“Emancipation 1972” by Blas F. Ople) reminiscent and symbolic of freedom (from foreign dictates). On the background is the Declaration of Martial Law in President Ferdinand Marcos’ own handwriting (SEE more information about it on November 18, 2012 post).

ATOMEDIA PHILIPINES

          On the cover of this first magazine in the Philippines about atomic energy is a very simplified representation of an atomic burst. This came into being to streamline the nuclear energy program of the Marcos government, educated the public, and serve as forum for articles and discussion regarding nuclear energy. It became the publication of the Atomic Energy Commission.

          Actress Elizabeth Oropeza on the first front cover of the magazine, stuffing a stuff toy on his front stuffs. Contains sexy pictures, public interest articles, more or less, directly or indirectly connected to sex (SEE more information about it on November 30, 2012 post).

Aglow (as in radiance of color, spirit and emotion)

          Ten-year-old Bernadette E. Salas on the cover of this magazine, in my book, one of the best first issue covers I’ve seen. Contains trivia, essays and articles about Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular vulgar (SEE more information about it on September 23, 2012 post).

Aglow Weekly Magazine (September 23, 1988).

PHILIPPINE GRAPHIC (Indeed!)

          On the premier cover is one unique “graphic” illustration titled Independence: An Endangered Species: A woman seemingly crucified (more like afloat with her hands tied); looking upward with her visually decapitated head attached to her neck; her left breast exposed apparent to breastfeeding a child also floating infront of her. A dovelike silhouette can also be seen emanating from the child’s head. Notice that at the back of the woman is the Philippine flag with its red portion on the left side signifying that the country is in the state of war. Picture Trivia

          Actress, singer, model and wildlife activist Hayden Panettiere became known for her role as Claire Bennet, the cheerleader with superpower, in the NBC hit series Heroes (2006-2010), for which she won several awards including the 2008 Teen Choice Award – Choice TV Actress: Action Adventure.
          Among Panettiere’s advocacy is to stop the hunting of dolphins and whales. On January 8, 2008, she handed letters of protest to the Norwegian and Japanese ambassadors in the United States calling for Norway and Japan to stop its whale hunting.

Ang Playhouse Men’s Magazine ay unang lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Disyembre 8, 2007 (Bagama’t sa editorial box ay nakalagay ang petsang January 1, 2008). Ito ay inilimbag ng Atlas Publishing Inc. Kaiba sa mga nagsulputang franchised men’s magazine katulad ng FHM Philippines, Maxim Philippines at Playboy Philippines, ang Playhouse ay isang orihinal na babasahing panlalaki sa titulo at konsepto – ideyang Filipino subalit pang-International ang kalidad. Hindi rin ito limitado sa mga seksing larawan lamang ng mga babae kundi naglalaman din ito ng mga naiibang full featured articles (Sa unang isyu kabilang ang mga cover stories na “Lesbian Lovers” at “Female Centaur” ni Aidan Garcia, “Bobbittised” ni Liam Rodriguez, at “Inside Women’s Fantasies” ni Ernee Lawagan). Ang unang dalawang isyu nito, na may dalawang magkaibang taklob-pahina (cover page), ay pumatok sa mga mambabasa. Ito ay dahil sa naiiba at makatawag-pansin nitong pagsasalarwan at nilalaman na paksa. Datapuwa’t sa di-mawaring dahilan binago ang konsepto nito sa ikatlo at lalo pa sa ika-apat at huling isyu. Ang dating mapagbago o revoltionary men’s magazine ay naging “ordinary” at ang dating mga kapanapanabik na paksa ay naging nakababagot. Isa ito sa ilang babasahin inilimbag ng Atlas na nakapanghihinayang ang pagkawala.

Picture Trivia

          Jet Li and his family had a harrowing experience while they were vacationing in the Maldives when an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami hit the island after the Indonesian earthquake (December 26, 2004). After that life and death experience, Li established a foundation – The One Foundation – the objective of which is to help in international disaster relief with the Red Cross.
