Ang unang labas ng magazine na Philippine Graphic
na may petsang June 18, 1990

Ang Philippine Graphic ay isang lingguhang magazine na unang lumabas noong June 18, 1990. Ito ay pinatnugutan ng 1976 National Artist for Literature na si Nick Joaquin (1917-2004), na siya ring sumulat ng isa sa mga pangunahing artikulo ng magazine na “Marcosian Flashbacks.” Mababasa dito ang mga tudling (column) ng mga batikang manunulat na sina Adrian Cristobal, Luis Beltran at Julie Yap-Daza. Tampok din sa unang labas ng Philippine Graphic ang mga personalidad na sina Nora Aunor, Lea Salonga, Kris Aquino at ang boksingerong si Luisito Espinosa.
Kakaiba naman ang unang taklob-pahina (cover page) ng magazine na ito: Isang nakabiting babae na nakatali ang magkabilang kamay; nakatingala ang ulo na manapa’y pugot na idinugtong sa ginilitang leeg; litaw ang kaliwang suso; at may sanggol na tila nakalutang sa ibabaw ng kaniyang kandungan, na sa ulo nito ay umiibis ang hilagyo ng anyong-kalapati. Nakaladlad sa likuran niya ang watawat ng Pilipinas. Mapapansin na ang pulang bahagi ng watawat ay nasa kaliwang panig na sumasagisag na nasa katayuan ng digmaan ang bansa. Sa likod nito ay ang salisalimuot at sangang-sangang paglalarawan ng iba’t-ibang mukha ng kahirapan at pakikibaka. Pinamagatan itong “Kalayaan: Isang Nanganganib na Mapuksang Nilikha” (Independence: An Endangered Species).


Events that happened on June 18:
1908 – The University of the Philippines was established by virtue of Act No. 1870 of the First Philippine Legislative known as the “University Act.”
1923 – Pancho Villa (Francisco Guilledo, 1901-1925) became the first ever Filipino boxer to win a world title when he knocked out Jimmy Wilde on the seventh round at Polo Grounds in New York.
1938 – Bacolod (capital of Negros occidental) was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 326.
1948 – Naga (formerly Nueva caceres) in Camirines Sur and Legaspi in Albay were declared cities by virture of Republic Act No. 305 and 306 respectively.
1960 – San Carlos in Negros Occidental was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 2643, and Gingoog in Misamis oriental and Toledo in Cebu were declared cities by virtue of Republic Act No. 2688.
1961 – Canlaon in Negros Oriental was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act. No. 3445.
1966 – Tagbilaran in Bohol was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No.4660. Camiguin became a province by virtue of Republic Act No. 4669. Mountain Province was divided into four – Benguet, Bontoc, Ifugao and Kalinga-Apayao – by virtue of Republic Act No. 4695. South Cotobato became a province by virtue of Republic Act No. 4849.

          Noong 1950, si Chou Enlai (1898-1976) ay naging overall commander ng sandatahang-lakas ng People’s Republic of China. Ito ang panahon kung saan nagkaroon ng tensyon at labanan sa 38th parallel sa boundary ng North Korea at South Korea. Maaalalang humingi pa nga ng pahintulot si General Douglas MacArthur kay President Harry Truman na bombahin ang China, na hindi naman sinang-ayunan ng pangulo ng America. Nagkaroon ng stalemate ang magkabilang panig, ang China at North Korea sa isang banda at United States at South Korea sa kabilang banda, noong Hunyo 1951. Makalipas ang dalawang taon, nagkaroon ceasefire agreement noong July 27, 1953 na nilagdaan sa Panmunjom, sa Geonggi-do province ng South Korea sa border nito sa North Korea. Dito pormal na nahati ang North Korea at South Korea sa 38th parallel na mayroong apat na kilometrong demilitarized zone.
          Si Chou Enlai ay naging Premier ng People’s Republic of China mula October 1, 1949 hanggang sa kaniyang pagpanaw noong January 8, 1976.
