Ang statue ay idinisenyo ng French scuptor na si Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) at may taas, mula sa ground level hanggang sa pinakadulo ng liyab ng sulong hawak ni Libertas, na 305 talampakan at isang pulgada (humigit-kumulang 93 metro). Ito ay may bigat na 450,000 pounds (204.1 metric tons).
