Events that happened on June 16:
1901 – The first newspaper in Cebuano – Ang Suga – was published and edited by Vicente Sotto. It went into circulation for 10 years.
1950 – Iligan (in Lanao del Norte) and Cabanatuan (in Nueva Ecija) were declared cities by virtue of Republic Act Nos. 525 and 526 respectively.
1951 – The National Movement for Free Election (NAMFREL) was organized through the national convention of the Philippine Veteran Legion and led by Jaime Ferrer, Eleuterio Adevoso and Frisco San Juan.


Personalities and celebrities born on June 16:
1912 – Pelagio A. Cruz, first commanding general of the Philippine Air Force and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff (December 1961 - August 30, 1962) – in Baliuag, Bulacan (d. October 21, 1986).
1982 – Jodi Santamaria (full name Jodi Chrissie Garcia Santamaria), actress and television host.
