          Ang pagsusulit sa kauna-unahang National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) ay sinimulang ay ginanap noong Nobyembre 25, 1973. Ito ay naging isang napakainam na panunutunan ng pagbabatayan ng mga mag-aaral, at maging ng mga educational institution, sa pagkuha ng tamang academic courses. Dahil dito, tumaas ang kalidad ng mga nagtatapos sa mga kolehiyo at pamantasan. Datapuwa’t inalis ito sa pamamagitan ng Republic Act No. 7731 noong Hunyo 1, 1994.

Ang nobelang “Waldas” ni Francisco V. Coching,
tampok sa taklob-pahina ng Pilipino Komiks
Blg. 216 (Setyembre 10, 1955).
          Isa sa itinatanging nobela ni Francisco V. Coching ang “Waldas” (1954-1955) na kapwa niya isinulat at iginuhit para sa mga pahina ng Pilipino Komiks. Ang kuwento ay tungkol sa isang dalagang anak-mayaman na nagngangalang Elizabeth Sandoval, na mula sa pagkabata ay nasusunod ang bawat maibigan, at nagdalagang isang “waldas.” Nagsimula lamang magbago ang lahat nang mabiyudo at makapag-asawang ikalawa ang kaniyang ama ng isang mapanghimasok at malupit na madrasta.
          Ang “Waldas” ay isinapelikula ng Sampaguita Pictures noong 1955 na tinampukan ni Myrna Delgado sa pangunahing papel. Katambal niya si Pancho Magalona. Kasama rin sa pelikula sina Van de Leon, Eddie Garcia, Chichay, Rosa Mia, Conrado Conde, Panchito, Teroy de Guzman at Eddie Arenas.

          Do you that Madonna (full name Madonna Louis Ciccone) dedicated her album True Blue (1986) to her then husband Sean Penn? According to Rolling Stone, the songs in the album “originated from her heart.” Three of the songs reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100: “Live to Tell,” “Papa Don't Preach” at “Open Your Heart.” Aside from these, two more songs from the album was in the Top Five, “True Blue” at “La Isla Bonita.” The True Blue album, on the other hand, soared to the top charts of more than 28 countries.
          The following year, from July to September 1987, Madonna was on the “Who's That Girl” World Tour. Unfortunately, in Madonna’s rise to fame, her relationship with Penn soured. On December 1987, they filed for divorce that took effect on January 1989.

Ang Tyrannosaurus rex o T-rex
(kuha mula sa pelikulang Jurassic Park),

          Alam niyo ba kung saan nagmula ang salitang “Jurassic?” Ang salitang “Jurassic” ay mula sa salitang Pranses na Jurassique na halaw naman sa pangalan ng Jura Mountains sa Switzerland. Sa mga limestone dominated area ng kabundukang ito nakatuklas ang German naturalist at explorer na si Friedrich Alexander von Humboldt ng kakaiba at hiwalay na formation (batay sa geologic era) noong 1792 na tinawag niyang “Jurakalk.” Ang pangalang Jura naman ay nagmula sa Celtic rootword na ‘jor” na ang ibig sabihin ay “gubat.”
          Sa Wikang Filipino, isang bagong euphemism ang salitang “dyurasik” (“Jurassic”) na ang ibig sabihin ay “ubod ng luma” o “ubod ng tanda” bilang pagsasalarawan, halimbawa, ng isang gamit o kasangkapan. Ang pagsasalarawang ito ay naging bahagi ng mainstream literature matapos ang pagpapalabas ng Jurassic Park (1993) at ng mga sequels nito sa Pilipinas.

          Ang mga dinosaurs (sipatin ang kalakip na larawan) na stegosaurus (“cover lizard”), brontosaurus (“thunder“lizard) at rhamphorynchus (“prow beak”) ay nabibilang sa panahon ng Jurassic Period. Ang Jurassic Period ay ang pangalawang panahon (period) ng Mesozoic Era. Ang una ay ang Triassic Period, at ang sumusunod naman sa Jurassic Period ay ang Cretaceous Period. Ito ang mga panahon kung saan nagsulputan at nabuhay sa daigdig ang mga dinosaurs.           Alam niyo ba na maraming mali sa pelikulang Jurassic Park at sa dalawang sequel nito? Una sa lahat, ang tyrannosaurus rex o t-rex ay dinosaur na nabuhay sa Cretaceous Period at hindi sa Jurassic Period. Ganoon din ang velociraptor, triceratops, spinosaurus, etc.

          Ang Jurassic Park ay isang nobelang science fiction na sinulat ni Michael Crichton noong 1990. Ganoon din ang 1995 sequel nito na The Lost World. Ang dalawang nobela ay ginawang pelikula na may mga kaparehong titulo ni Steven Speilberg noong 1993 at 1997. May ikatlong pelikulang nagawa na hiwalay sa mga nobela ni Crichton na dinirehe naman ni Joe Johnston noong 2001. Alam ni Crichton ang mga scientifically questionable details ng kaniyang nobela subalit ito pa rin ang ginamit na batayan sa mga pelikula.

          Ayon sa mga siyentista, impossible na ma-clone ang mga dinosaurs sa mga paraang binanggit at inilarawan sa mga naturang nobela at pelikula.

          Sa Jurassic Park III, naglabanan ang tyrannosaurus rex at spinosaurus. Sa tunay na buhay, imposible itong mangyari, sapagkat magkaiba ang panahon at lugar kung saan nabuhay ang dalawang dinosaur. Bagama’t parehong nabibilang sa Cretaceous Period ang t-rex at spinosaurus, sa magkaibang bahagi ng panahon na ito na milyon-milyong taon ang pagitan sila nabuhay. Bukod dito ang t-rex ay lumaganap sa North America samantalang ang spinosaurus ay sa Africa.

          The real name of American actress, model and sex symbol Bo Derek is Mary Cathleen Collins. She rose to stardom after portraying the role of Jenny Hanley in the film 10 (1979) directed by Blake Edwards. This was followed by A Change of season (1980) and Tarzan the Ape Man (1981). Bo Derek’s first leading role for which she used the name Kathleen Collins was in the R-rated Fantasies (made in 1973) under the direction of her would-be husband John Derek. She was only 17-year-old. There was difficulty in marketing the film, so it was only in 1981 when it was released in theaters. On the other hand, Bo Derek was first seen in the film Orca (1977).

1973 – The San Juanico Bridge (also known as the Marcos Bridge), the longest bridge in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia during the time connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte, was inaugurated

1993 – The processional boat or pagoda bearing the Wawa holy cross capsized in the middle of a river. About 275 devotees drowned. It is known as the Bocaue Tragedy.

          The Finnish architect and structural engineer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) is considered one of the best structural designers of the 20th century. He is known and admired throughout the world for his rationalist style of structural design.
          The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, which is made of steel and glass and constructed in 1956, was designed by Saarinen together with his father who is also a renowned architect of his time. Here, he used scaled models to show and impart his ideas at the same time obtain some inputs from other professionals in the field of design and construction.
          Many of Saarinen’s projects made use of catenary curves in its structural design. One of the most well-known thin-shell structures in the United States, the Kresge Auditorium inside the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed by Saarinen. Another is the Ingalls Rink inside Yale University. The most prominent structure he designed is the TWA Flight Center.

          Ang “Dumagit” ay nobelang isinulat at iginuhit ni Francisco V. Coching na lumabas sa mga pahina ng Pilipino Komiks (1953-1954) at isinapelikula ng Sampaguita Pictures noong 1954. Ito ay isang kuwento tungkol sa isang batang lalaking pinanganlang Dumagit na lumaki sa kagubatan kasama ng mga hayop.

          Batay sa kuwento, napadpad sa isang isla ang mag-asawang Marina at Joaquin Olivar. Sa kagubatan ng islang ito namatay si Marina matapos ipanganak ang isang batang lalaking pinangalanang David. Itinaguyod ni Joaquin si David, at dahil sa kakaibang liksi ng bata, binigyan niya ito ng palayaw na “Dumagit.” Sa kasamaang-palad napatay ng mga mangangasong dumayo sa isla si Joaquin kaya mag-isang lumaki si Dumagit kasama ang kaniyang mga kaibigang hayop. Makalipas ang 20 taon, dumating sa isla si Federico, ang kapatid ni Joaquin. Kinuha niyang pabalik sa sibilisasyon si Dumagit, subalit hindi siya makaangkop sa mga kaugalian ng kalunsuran kaya higit na ninais ng binata na bumalik sa kinagisnang isla kasama ang kaniyang minamahal na katipan na si Marabini.
          Sa pelikula, si Cesar Ramirez ang gumanap na Dumagit kasama sina Myrna Delgado, Lolita Rodriguez, Van de Leon, na pinatnugutan ni Armando Garces.

          Princess Leia and Jabba the Hutt are two characters in George Lucas’  Star Wars space saga Si Princess Leia at si Jabba the Hutt ay dalawang characters sa Star Wars space saga that are diametrically opposite. Princess Leia (portrayed by Carrie Fisher) is one of the leading characters of the original Star Wars Trilogy, the twin sister of the saga’s hero, Luke Skywalker, and the leader of rebel group that is fighting the “Empire.” Jabba the Hutt (voiced by Larry Ward), on the other hand, is a supporting character, a villain, a 600-year-old crime lord in the desert planet Tatooine. Princess Leia symbolizes good, beauty, and loyalty to her companions while Jabba is the epitome of evil, ugliness and cruelty to his minions.
