          The general interest magazine Life was established on January 4, 1883. It was bought by Time magazine founder Henry Luce in 1936. It underwent a change of face when it was re-launched on November 23, 1936. This was the third magazine published by Luce following Time and Fortune.

          Ang Spanish galleon na San Diego ay dating isang sasakyang-dagat na pangkalakal na ang pangalan ay San Antonio, bago ito nilagyan ng mga kanyon at ginawang pandigma. Si Antonio de Morga (1559-1636) ang ginawang kapitan nito.

          Noong Disyembre 14, 1600, nakasagupa ng San Diego ang saskyang-dagat pandigma ng mga Dutch na Mauritius na pinamumunuan ni Olivier van Noort (1558-1627) sa karagatan humigit-kumulang 50-kilometro sa timog-kanluran ng Maynila, malapit sa Nasugbu, Batangas. Napalubog ang San Diego nang hindi man lamang nakaganti ng kahit isang putok. Ito ay kahit pa tatlong beses na higit na malaki ito kaysa sa Mauritius.

          Makalipas and halos 400 na taon, natagpuan ang mga labi ng galleon sa ilalim ng karagatan malapit sa dalampasigan ng Fortune Island, sa Nasugbu, Batangas. Nakuha mula rito ang 34,407 na artifacts kabilang ang isang 17th-century astrolabe, na itinuturing na isa sa limang “oldest and best preserved specimen” na nalalabi sa daigdig.

1973 – The San Juanico Bridge (also known as the Marcos Bridge), the longest bridge in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia during the time connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte, was inaugurated

1993 – The processional boat or pagoda bearing the Wawa holy cross capsized in the middle of a river. About 275 devotees drowned. It is known as the Bocaue Tragedy.

Picture Trivia

          The Finnish architect and structural engineer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) is considered one of the best structural designers of the 20th century. He is known and admired throughout the world for his rationalist style of structural design.

          The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, which is made of steel and glass and constructed in 1956, was designed by Saarinen together with his father who is also a renowned architect of his time. Here, he used scaled models to show and impart his ideas at the same time obtain some inputs from other professionals in the field of design and construction.

          Many of Saarinen’s projects made use of catenary curves in its structural design. One of the most well-known thin-shell structures in the United States, the Kresge Auditorium inside the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed by Saarinen. Another is the Ingalls Rink inside Yale University. The most prominent structure he designed is the TWA Flight Center.

          Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel became known for her title role in the French film Emmanuelle (1974) and Emmanuelle 2 (1975), which was based on the character created by Thai-born French novelist Emmanuelle Arsan (real name Marayat Bididh, 1932-2005) in the novel Emmanuelle: The Joys of a Woman (1959). She was soon typecast in the role of seductive woman. She also starred in the films Lady Chatterley's Lover (1981), Mata Hari (1985), and Private Lessons (1981), where she played the role of Nicole Mallow, a hired maid who seduced and taught sex to a teenage boy.

UNANG LABAS

Alam niyo ba na may Filipino superhero character na nagngangalang Captain Suicide? Siya ay likha ni Rex Guerrero sa kaniyang komiks story na “Captain Suicide and His Daredevils.” Iginuhit naman ito ni Rico Rival na na-serialized sa mga pahina ng Espesyal Komiks mula Abril 12, 1965 hanggang Hunyo 6, 1966.

Kakaibang superhero si Captain Suicide mula sa kaniyang alter-ego at kakayahan hanggang sa kaniyang costume. Ang alter-ego niya ay si Roger Vargas na tinaguriang “pinakadakilang sirkero sa buong mundo” (greatest acrobat in the world). Kakaiba ang costume niya na kung ilalarawan ay tila baga pinaghalong bandila ng Pilipinas sa pang-itaas at mala-pajama ng payaso o clown ang pang-ibaba.

Sa pasimula ng istorya, nagtayo si Vargas ng isang gymnasium kung saan tinuturuan niya ng sining ng pagsisirko ang mga kabataan, kabilang na ang kaniyang naging sidekick na si Dino. Mula rito nakabuo siya ng isang pangkat ng mga crimefighters na tinawag niyang “Daredevils.” Dahil sa kanilang galing, walang takot nilang kinalaban ang mga talamak na masasamang tao.

Ang arch-enemy ni Captain Suicide ay ang pinuno ng isang notorious na crime syndicate na nagngangalang Bolgam.

          Martin Luther King (1929-1968) is known in world history as an African-American activist, religious and civil rights leader. The now immortal line “I have a dream” was from his speech in the protest rally in Washington in 1963.
          Do you know that in 1964 King was bestowed the Nobel Peace Prize for his works to end racial segregation and racial discrimination in America through civil disobedience and peaceful protests? King was the youngest person to be given the accolade during the time. He was known as the champion of people’s right. He bravely revealed and denounced the injustices committed by American capitalists in Asia, Africa and South America.
          King led the protest against America’s meddling in the Vietnam War. In his speech on Abril 4, 1969, exactly one year before he was cowardly assassinated, he called the United States government as “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world.” He even accused the US government of killing millions of North Vietnamese including small children and babies. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, allegedly by James Earl Ray (1928-1998), but his family never believed this.

          Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) won the Academy Best Award awards twice, for the films Battlefield 8 (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). Two among these are the French Legion of Honor (1987) and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2000). In 2001, because of Taylor’s humanitarian works, especially in soliciting 200-million-dollar funds for research on AIDS and in propagating international awareness about the disease, she was given a Presidential Citizens Medal.
