          Noong Agosto 31, 1821, natapos ang paghihimagsik ng mga Boholano (Bohol Rebellion) laban sa mananakop na mga kastila. Ang himagsikan ito na tinatawag din sa kasaysayan na Dagohoy Revolt (Si Francisco Dagohoy ang nagsimula ng himagsikang ito) ang pinakamatagal sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas.

          Ang Kauna-unahang Gawad Gantimpalang Ramon Magsaysay (Ramon Magsaysay Award) ay ipinagkaloob sa mga larangan ng government service, public service, community leadership, journalism and literature, at international understanding noong Agosto 31, 1958. Mula sa araw na ito, taunan ng ipinagkakaloob ang gawad na ito sa mga karapat-dapat at natatanging mga tao sa pag-alaala kay Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay.

1893 – Vicente Salumbides, pioneer in the film industry of the Philippines and delegate to the 1934 Constitutional Convention – in Lopez, Quezon (d. August 6, 1979).


1907 – Ramon Magsaysay, Seventh President of the Philippines (1953-1957) – in Iba, Zambales (d. March 17, 1957).

          Jayne Mansfield (real name Vera Jayne Palmer, 1933-1967) was the first female lead actress that appeared totally naked in a Hollywood mainstream film –  Promises! Promises! (1963). After her portrayal in the film, Mansfield was chosen to replace the then recently deceased Marilyn Monroe in Kiss Me Stupid (1964), a romantic-comedy, opposite Dean Martin. She declined because she was pregnant at the time. The role went to Kim Novak. In 1966, she did the film Single Room Furnished under the direction of her third husband Matt Cimber (real name Thomas Vitale Octaviano).
          Do you know where she get’s the name “Mansfield?” It’s from her first husband Paul Mansfield.

Events that happened on July 2:

1973 – The San Juanico Bridge (also known as the Marcos Bridge), the longest bridge in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia during the time connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte, was inaugurated

1993 – The processional boat or pagoda bearing the Wawa holy cross capsized in the middle of a river. About 275 devotees drowned. It is known as the Bocaue Tragedy.

Picture Trivia

          The Finnish architect and structural engineer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) is considered one of the best structural designers of the 20th century. He is known and admired throughout the world for his rationalist style of structural design.

          The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, which is made of steel and glass and constructed in 1956, was designed by Saarinen together with his father who is also a renowned architect of his time. Here, he used scaled models to show and impart his ideas at the same time obtain some inputs from other professionals in the field of design and construction.

          Many of Saarinen’s projects made use of catenary curves in its structural design. One of the most well-known thin-shell structures in the United States, the Kresge Auditorium inside the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed by Saarinen. Another is the Ingalls Rink inside Yale University. The most prominent structure he designed is the TWA Flight Center.
