          Do you know that Italian actress Claudia Cardinale only made a few films in Hollywood? This is because she doesn’t want to leave Europe for a long time.  Among the films she made in Hollywood are The Pink Panther (1963), Circus World (1964), Blindfold (1965), The Professionals (1966), Don’t make Waves (1967), and Son of the Pink Panther (1993).

          When she played the role of Princess Dahla in the The Pink Panther, she still doesn’t know how to speak English. So her lines in the films were spoken by New Zealand television actress Gale Garnett.

1973 – The San Juanico Bridge (also known as the Marcos Bridge), the longest bridge in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia during the time connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte, was inaugurated

1993 – The processional boat or pagoda bearing the Wawa holy cross capsized in the middle of a river. About 275 devotees drowned. It is known as the Bocaue Tragedy.

1862 – Proceso Pabalan, composer and considered as the “Father of Pampango Plays” – in Bacolor, Pampanga (d. January 1, 1904)

Picture Trivia

          The Finnish architect and structural engineer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) is considered one of the best structural designers of the 20th century. He is known and admired throughout the world for his rationalist style of structural design.

          The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, which is made of steel and glass and constructed in 1956, was designed by Saarinen together with his father who is also a renowned architect of his time. Here, he used scaled models to show and impart his ideas at the same time obtain some inputs from other professionals in the field of design and construction.

          Many of Saarinen’s projects made use of catenary curves in its structural design. One of the most well-known thin-shell structures in the United States, the Kresge Auditorium inside the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed by Saarinen. Another is the Ingalls Rink inside Yale University. The most prominent structure he designed is the TWA Flight Center.

1939 – The Philippine Writers League was organized, with Federico Mangahas as president.

1941 – The Philippine Airline (PAL) was founded by a group of businessmen led by Andres Soriano, one of the Philippines’ leading industrialists.

          In the history of American music, Whitney Houston (1963-2012) is the only singer that had seven consecutive Number 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits. Her best-selling self-titled debut album was hailed by Rolling Stone as the “Best Album” of 1986.
          Houston was the lead actress in her film debut The Bodyguard (1992) opposite Kevin Costner. The original soundtrack of the film won the Grammy Award for “Album of the Year.” The lead single, “I Will Always Love You” was awarded the “Best-Selling Single by a Female Artist” in music history.

1916 – Through Act No. 2572, the Division of Ethnology and the Fine Arts Division of the Philippine Museum were merged with the National Library under the supervision of the Department of Justice.

1945 – Josefa Llanes Escoda was executed by Japanese soldiers.

1982 – First Manila International Marathon was held. Waldemar Cierpinski of East Germany won the event with a time of two hours 14 minutes and 27 seconds. Philip Camp (U.S.) and Chang Ming Cheng (Taiwan) was second and third, respectively. The top Filipino finisher was Ricardo Carillo, runner from the Philippine Army, who placed sixth overall with a time of 2:25:01.
