TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MAGAZINE COVERS

TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MAGAZINE COVERS

I tagged it “Traditional Christmas” because most of us know that December 25 is not really the day of birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It’s the wrong day, month and year of beginning. Christmas around the world, however, have been observed for centuries on this day.

Daily, weekly and monthly publications follow the same tradition, and their covers speak of the annual event.

Here are some Philippine magazines with Christmas as the theme or part of the layout of the covers.

This one, as of this posting, is 71 years old. The Christmas issue of Daigdig (Ang Dating Hiwaga) featuring Tita Duran (Teresita Rigo Durango, 1929-1991), and Jose Perez Vera.

On the cover: Shirley Guevarra Borja

Written 27 years ago, this article “Signs of the Times” unveiled many events that had been foretold in the Holy Scriptures.

“He (Jesus) answered and said to them, ‘when it is evening you say, it will be fair weather, for the sky is red; and in the morning, it will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening. Hypocrites! You know to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.” – The Gospel According to Matthew 16:2-3, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.

Paradise Lost: Environmental Crisis

MOD Filipina Vol. 24 No. 1057, December 6, 1991
On the cover: Martina Campos Asuncion

This article, “Pardise Lost: Environmental Crisis,” was written 26 years ago, but the lingering questions remained blunt and relevant. Mindanao, the once called “Promised Land,” now perennially flooded whenever it rains. This is because its once bountiful forests are almost denuded. Similar situation can be seen throughout the country.

“Many shepherds have ruined My vineyards and trampled the plants in my field. They have turned my field into a desert that is wilted and dead. The whole country is an empty desert, because no one who lives there cares.” – Jeremiah 12:10-11, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

Earthquake-Proof Structures: Are There Such Things?

MOD Filipina Vol. 24 No. 1054, November 15, 1991
On the cover: Anna Francesca “Frannie” Bianco Abad

This article – “Earthquake-Proof Structures: Are There Such Things?” – was written and published 26 years ago. Among the items I mentioned here are proposals for the upgrading of the National Building Code and the Structural Code of the Philippines. It was even endorsed by former PHIVOLCS Director Raymundo Punongbayan. Up to now, however, no upgrading has been done.

Can the Living (Really) Communicate With the Dead?

MOD Filipina Vol. 22 No. 948, November 3, 1989
On the cover: Maria Lourdes “Lou” Bunyi

Popular article theme on Holloween and All Saints’ Day are anything and everything associated with ghosts, spiritism, communicating with the dead. So, this too, I have rewritten several times. Foremost among the questions is “Can the Living (Really) Communicate with the Dead?”

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 21 No. 28, November 4, 1997
On the cover: Brad Pitt with Jennifer Aniston (inset)

A similar article as the one published in MOD Filipina November 3, 1989 issue (posted above), and in Celebrity World November 7, 1994 issue titled “Ghosts, Communicating with the Dead, are They for Real?” The article, “Is it Possible to Communicate with the Dead?” on the other hand, was first published in Prime Weekly Edition November 10, 1988 issue.

Also in this Mr. & Ms. November 4, 1997 issue is one of the more difficult crossword puzzles that I have made.

“For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all..... Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.” – Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.
