          The fictional superhero Captain America was conceptualized by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. He first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941), published by Timely Comics.
          It is the first Marvel Comics character to be seen in media outside comics with the release of the 1944 movie serial, Captain America. Both comics and movies were used as propaganda materials during World War II.
          Chris Evans who played Captain America in several films since 2011 earlier played another Marvel Comics character, the Human Torch, in the films Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Ang nobelang “Waldas” ni Francisco V. Coching,
tampok sa taklob-pahina ng Pilipino Komiks
Blg. 216 (Setyembre 10, 1955).

          Isa sa itinatanging nobela ni Francisco V. Coching ang “Waldas” (1954-1955) na kapwa niya isinulat at iginuhit para sa mga pahina ng Pilipino Komiks. Ang kuwento ay tungkol sa isang dalagang anak-mayaman na nagngangalang Elizabeth Sandoval, na mula sa pagkabata ay nasusunod ang bawat maibigan, at nagdalagang isang “waldas.” Nagsimula lamang magbago ang lahat nang mabiyudo at makapag-asawang ikalawa ang kaniyang ama ng isang mapanghimasok at malupit na madrasta.

          Ang “Waldas” ay isinapelikula ng Sampaguita Pictures noong 1955 na tinampukan ni Myrna Delgado sa pangunahing papel. Katambal niya si Pancho Magalona. Kasama rin sa pelikula sina Van de Leon, Eddie Garcia, Chichay, Rosa Mia, Conrado Conde, Panchito, Teroy de Guzman at Eddie Arenas.

          Do you that Madonna (full name Madonna Louis Ciccone) dedicated her album True Blue (1986) to her then husband Sean Penn? According to Rolling Stone, the songs in the album “originated from her heart.” Three of the songs reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100: “Live to Tell,” “Papa Don't Preach” at “Open Your Heart.” Aside from these, two more songs from the album was in the Top Five, “True Blue” at “La Isla Bonita.” The True Blue album, on the other hand, soared to the top charts of more than 28 countries.
          The following year, from July to September 1987, Madonna was on the “Who's That Girl” World Tour. Unfortunately, in Madonna’s rise to fame, her relationship with Penn soured. On December 1987, they filed for divorce that took effect on January 1989.

Ang “Pedro Matapang,” isa sa
“Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang”
na kinatha ni Severino Reyes,
nasa taklob-pahina ng ikalawang isyu
ng Tagalog Klasiks na lumabas
noong Hulyo 30, 1949.

          Unang nabasa sa magasing Liwayway si Lola Basyang, isang matandang babaeng nagsasalaysay ng mga kuwento sa mga nakikinig na mga bata. Ito ay nilikha ni Severino Reyes (1861-1942), sa seryeng “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang” na nagsimula noong Mayo 25, 1925. Ang unang kuwento ay ang “Plautin ni Periking,” na nagsasaysay ng pakikipagsapalaran ng isang batang may mahiwagang pluta (magic flute) at lumilipad na latag (flying carpet). Halos lahat ng mga kuwento ay patungkol sa mga alamat at istoryang klasiko, at mga kakaibang romansa, kababalaghan at pakikipagsapalaran.  Karaniwang may dalawang nagtutunggaling mga karakter ang kuwento na lumalayon at sumasagisag sa kabutihan at kasamaan. Laging may kapupulutang aral sa katapusan ng kuwento. Natigil ito nang yumao si Reyes noong Setyembre 15, 1942. Umabot ng 407 ang bilang ng mga kuwento na isinaysay ng karakter na si Lola Basyang mula 1925 hanggang 1942.

          Sa pamamagitan ng anak ni Severino Reyes na si Pedrito, muling lumabas ang “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang” sa mga pahina ng Tagalog Klasiks bilang mga kuwentong iginuhit (illustrated stories) sa pagsisimula sa sirkulasyon ng komiks na ito noong Hulyo 16, 1949. Unang lumabas sa Tagalog Klasiks ang kuwentong “Maryang Makiling.” Nasundan ito ng “Pedro Matapang” (Hulyo 30, 1949), “Prinsipeng Unggoy” (Agosto 13, 1949), “Ang Sirena sa Ilog Pasig” (Setyembre 10, 1949), atbp. Ang mga kuwento ay inilarawan ng mga batikang dibuhista kabilang sina Maning de Leon, Nestor Redondo, Jesus Ramos, Jess Jodloman at Ruben Yandoc.

          Si Lola Basyang ay ibinatay ni Reyes kay Donya Gervasia Guzman de Zamora, ang matriarka ng pamilyang Zamora na naninirahan sa Quiapo. Ayon kay Reyes, si Donya Basyang ay lagi niyang nakikitang nagsasalaysay ng mga kuwento sa kaniyang mga apo tuwing matatapos ang hapunan. Ang eksenang ito ang ginamit ni Reyes upang mabuo ang konsepto ng “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.”

          Simula ng 1950s, naging serye rin sa radio ang likhang ito ni Reyes. Nang lumaon, naging batayan din ito ng mga palabas sa television at pelikula.

January 26 in Philippine History:

1821 – Governor-General Mariano Fernandez de Folgueras and Archbishop Luis de Arrejola issued instructions for the election of Filipino deputies to the Spanish Cortez.

1967 – Gil J. Puyat became Senate President of the Philippines. He held the position for six years until the Senate was abolished by Martial Law.

1970 – Youth and student demonstration in front of the Philippine Congress calling for a nonpartisan constitutional convention, which led to more protest rallies. Imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat-capitalism were the main issues of the student movement that came to be called the “First Quarter Storm.”

          Contrary to popular belief, the lion (Panthera leo) is not the largest species of cat existing today, but the tiger (Panthera tigris).
