The leopard (scientifically known as Panthera pardus) is a large spotted
member of the cat family (Felidae)
native to Africa and Asia. Do you know that leopards once inhabited much of
Europe? They did, but became extinct there near the end of the Pleistocene,
some 10,000 years ago. The oldest known fossils of leopards are from late
Pliocene deposits (about two million years old) in India and southern Africa.
Leopards
are endangered throughout their distribution due to loss of habitat and natural
prey, and hunting.
