An illustration of early 20th-cenntury Paris fashion
drawn by American artist at industrial designer Helen Dryden
on the cover of Vogue (April 15, 1920).
Picture Trivia
Helen Dryden (1887-1981) was an American artist and industrial designer that ventured in the field of fashion in the early part of the 20th century. In the beginning, she was rejected by fashion magazines, including Vogue. Her works and illustrations were severely criticized. When American publisher Conde Montrose Nast (1873-1942) took over management of Vogue, and saw Dryden’s illustrations, he immediately ordered the editors to find her. That was the beginning of Dryden’s career in Vogue as cover and fashion illustrator that lasted 13 years.
