Ang Buwan ng Mayo
Ang buwan ng Mayo na panglimang buwan sa Gregorian Calendar ay tinatawag sa sinaunang Roman Calendar na Maius na hinalaw sa pangalan ni Maia, ang diyosa ng pagsibol at paglago. Bagama’t mayroong nagsasabi na ito ay mula sa salitang Latin na majores na tumutukoy sa mga “nakatatandang tao” kaya ang buwang ito ay sinasabing para sa kanila. Isa pang posibleng pinagmulan ng pangalan ng buwang ito ay ang tawag sa mataas na kapulungan ng Senado sa Roma na tinatawag ding Majores.
Sa Pilipinas, ang buwan ng Mayo ay karaniwang tinutukoy bilang buwan ng mga piyesta na halaw sa sinaunang kaugalian ng mga katutubo na buwan ng pagpapasalamat sa mga diyos at diyosa o sa mga anito ng kalikasan dahil sa masaganang ani, na nahaluan ng paniniwalang Katoliko.
Ang agate ang birthstone ng Mayo noong sinaunang panahon at emerald naman sa makabagong panahon, samantalang ang flower of the month ay ang hawthorn.

1852 – The first Philippine peso bill originally called Peso Fuetes (‘strong peso”) was printed in the Philippines.
1898 – Battle of Manila Bay, the mock battle between American forces (flagsjip Olympia led Admiral George Dewey) and Spanish forces (flagship Reina Cristina led by Adfmiral Patricio Montojo) prior to the American Occupation of the Philippines.
