Here Comes the Flood: Still No Solution in Sight

Money Asia Vol. 3 No. 31, September 28, 1998
On the cover: An illustrative caricature of then President Joseph "Erap" Estrada and Lucio Tan,
on the Philippine Airline closure

This article, “Here Comes the Flood: Still No Solution in Sight,” has also been re-published a number of times. The reason is for emphasis, precisely as the title signifies.

“... As for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O GOD, in the multitude of Your mercy, hear me in the truth of Your salvation. Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. Let not the floodwaters overflow me, nor let the deep swallow me up; and let not the pit shut its mouth on me.” – The Book of Psalms 69:13-15, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.

The Silver Surfer on the cover of
Empire (April 2007).
Picture Trivia
The Marvel Comics cosmic superhero Silver Surfer (a.k.a. Norrin Radd of the Planet Zenn-La) was conceptualized by Jack Kirby and first appeared on Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966). Do you know that the character was unintentionally made? Even at the beginning, writer-editor Stan Lee was hesitant of including a character riding on a surfboard.
Silver Surfer’s silver screen debut was in the 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Do you know that two actors portrayed the character in the said film? The physical actor was Doug Jones, and the one who voiced the character was Laurence Fishburne. At the beginning, the production team was not sure if the Silver Surfer will have a dialogue. Fishburne was first chosen to be the voice of Galactus. In the finality, Galactus was not given a talking physical form but merely a cloudlike shape, and Fishburne eventually ended up voicing the Silver Surfer. One additional trivia – Doug Jones once worked as a contortionist.

January 17 in Philippine History
1981 – President Ferdinand E. Marcos lifted Martial Law by virtue of Proclamation 2045.
2001- The impeachment trial of then President Joseph E. Estrada was abrubtly stopped even though nothing has yet been proven. It eventually led to the start of the second successful EDSA Revolt that ousted him from power and installed Vice-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to the presidency. This would later be considered as one among many monumental mistakes in the annals of Philippine history, as many, including former President Corazon C. Aquino (1933-2009), who joined the clamor for Estrada's ouster, later on, admitted the mistake and apologized publicly to Estrada.

A portrait of Ronald Reagan on the cover of
TV Guide (January 17-21, 1981)
Picture Trivia

Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) was sixty nine years old when he was sworn into office for his first term on January 20, 1981. Reagan wrote his own inaugural address for which he spoke about America’s economic malaise, arguing: “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem.”
Barely two months in office, on March 30, 1981, Reagan, his press secretary James Brady, Washington police officer Thomas Delahanty, and Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy were struck by gunfire from would-be assassin John Hinckley Jr. outside the Washington Hilton hotel. Although “close to death” upon arrival at George Washington University Hospital, Reagan was stabilized in the emergency room, then underwent emergency exploratory surgery. He recovered and was released from the hospital on April 11, becoming the first serving U.S. president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. The attempt had great influence on Reagan’s popularity; polls indicated his approval rose to 73 percent. Reagan believed that “God had spared his life so that he might go on to fulfill a greater purpose.”
