Noong Disyembre 4, 1899, sa Digmaang Filipino-Amerikano, hinarap ni Heneral Manuel Tinio at ng kaniyang mga tauhan ang puwersa ng U.S. 33rd Infantry Regiments sa Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Bagama’t higit na marami sa bilang at may higit na malalakas na armas ang dayuhang mananakop, magiting na tinangka ng mga sundalong Filipino na pigilin ang paglusob ng mga Amerikano. Naging matindi ang labanan sa mga kalsada ng Vigan, mula madaling-araw hanggang katanghaliang-tapat. Nang magipit ay napilitang umatras sina Heneral Tinio.
