          On October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali did what most sports analyst thought was an “impossible task” when he knocked out George Foreman, the hardest puncher in heavyweight boxing history, in the eighth round of their title fight in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), dubbed the “Rumble in the Jungle.” After this fight, Ali cemented his pedestal for the nickname “The Greatest.”

          After the Foreman fight, Ali fought three boxers in 1975, Chuck Wepner, Ron Lyle, Joe Bugner, before his third fight with Joe Frazier on October 1, 1975, in the “Thrilla in Manila,” where he won by technical knockout.

           Actress Sue Lyon (full name Suellyn Lyon, born July 10, 1946) was only 14 years old when she portrayed the role of Dolores Haze, the sexually charged adolescent and the object of an older man’s obsessions in the 1962 film, Lolita, directed by Stanley Kubrick. She was chosen for the role partly because her curvy figure suggested an appearance of an adult. Based on the novel of the same title by Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov (1899-1977), Kubrick’s Lolita, although a toned-down version of the story, was nonetheless one of the most talked about films of its day. Only barely 15 years old when the film premiered, Sue Lyon became an instant celebrity and won a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.

          In what can be considered as scruples amid society’s double standard, Lyon went to a moviehouse to see her own film, Lolita, but ironically was not permitted to enter the theater because she was a minor.

          The following year, Lyon was again casted as a precocious and seductive young teen in the John Huston directorial The Night of the Iguana, where she fitted charm and beauty against the like of Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner to gain the attention of Richard Burton.

Singer-songwriter Donna Summer (birth name LaDonna Adrian Gaines, 1948-2012) rose to fame during the so-called “Disco Era” of the 1970s. She started as a Christian church choir singer, and later became the front singer for the psychedelic rock band, Crow, in the 1960s. During the tour of the musical “Hair,” she live in West Germany where she married Helmut Summer. From her husband’s name, she started using Donna Summer as her stage name. In the field of music, she is known as the “Queen of Disco.”

          The distinguished actors, James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll, were together in Claudine (1974), a film about Claudine Price (portrayed by Diahann Carroll), a black Harlem woman who singlehandedly raised her six children of two failed relationships. She found genuine love in the person of a garbage collector named Rupert Marshall (James Earl Jones). The movie, produced by Third World Films and released by 20th Century Fox, was one of a few mainstream films where the cast were predominantly African-American and and depicting a meaningful theme.

Picture Trivia

          The Finnish architect and structural engineer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) is considered one of the best structural designers of the 20th century. He is known and admired throughout the world for his rationalist style of structural design.

          The General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, which is made of steel and glass and constructed in 1956, was designed by Saarinen together with his father who is also a renowned architect of his time. Here, he used scaled models to show and impart his ideas at the same time obtain some inputs from other professionals in the field of design and construction.

          Many of Saarinen’s projects made use of catenary curves in its structural design. One of the most well-known thin-shell structures in the United States, the Kresge Auditorium inside the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was designed by Saarinen. Another is the Ingalls Rink inside Yale University. The most prominent structure he designed is the TWA Flight Center.

          Ang buwan ng Hulyo o July ay ang pangpitong buwan sa Gregorian Calendar. Noong panahon ng mga Romano, ito ang panglimang buwan at tinatawag na Quintilis. Ito ay batay sa kalendaryong likha umano ni Romulus, ang legendary ruler ng Rome, at nagsimula noong 738 B.C. Noon namang 45 B.C. pinalitan ang pangalan nito ng July bilang pagpaparangal kay Julius Caesar, ang magiting na emperador ng Roma.

          Ang gitnang oras at araw ng buong taon ay nasa buwan ng Hulyo. Sa regular na taon, ang ika-2 ng Hulyo ang gitnang araw ng taon.

          Nang sinaunang panahon, onyx ang birthstone ng buwan ng Hulyo, subalit sa makabagong panahon ruby ang natatanging hiyas ng buwan. Ang larkspur at water lily naman ang mga bulaklak para sa buwan ng Hulyo.

1875 – The first issue of Revista de Filipinas, a fortnightly newspaper in Spanish (edited by Jose Felipe and contained Ethnographic, historical and scientific studies pertaining to the Philippines, came off the press.

1902 – The Philippine Bill of 1902 known as the Cooper Law (sponsored by Congressman Henry Allen Cooper) was approved by the U.S. Congress. It provided for the establishment of civil government in the Philippines.
1947 – The Philippine Air Force was established.
