Napagwagian niya ito sa magkasunod na taong 1981 (para sa pelikulang Pakawalan Mo Ako) at 1982 (Relasyon). Ang naunang dalawa ay sina Charito Solis (Kundiman ng Lahi, 1959, at Emily, 1960) at Susan Roces (Maligno, 1977, at Gumising Ka Maruja, 1978).

          Noon namang taong 2000, bukod sa pagkahirang bilang Star Awards Best Actress para sa pelikulang Anak, pinarangalan si Vilma Santos ng Gawad Urian bilang “Aktres ng Dekada ’90” at binigiyan ng Cinemanila ng Lifetime Achievement Award.
