Today, September 11, 2021, is the 104th birth anniversary of Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr (1917-1989), the man who served longest as president of the Republic of the Philippines.

Many things have been written about him. During his ascent to the highest office of country, good and promising; during his early incumbency, praises and accolades; during his reelection, visions and reformations, during his struggle against the oligarchy, encouragements and criticisms; during his last days in power, woes and worries; and during the reign of the Yellow Regime, defamations and lies.

Indeed, much of the written accounts about President Marcos inside books and textbooks printed after February 1986 have been polluted by halftruths and lies that the younger generation of Filipinos have difficulties discerning the truth. Looking back, it was the first act of Cory’s Yellow Regime to purge all the good things that Marcos did, burn the documents, and replace them with all anti-Marcos concoctions they could invent. They pursued this for more than three decades until finally everything exploded in their faces.

Well, no matter what has been said and written about Marcos, one truth cannot be denied of the man – he had left a legacy so great no forces could purge, burn or topple them.

          The 40th president of the United States of America, Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911-2004), is considered by majority American public opinion as one of the “best president” of their nation. In his own public admission, President Reagan said he has learned a lot from his best friend, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos regarding statesmanship and leadership. Foremost among these is to put the welfare of the majority over and above those of the ruling elite or the oligarchy.           Writing down a diary of each day of his presidency, all accounts of events and incidents, is an advice that he followed from Marcos. The collection of the accounts in his diary, published on May 2007 and titled The Reagan Diaries, became a bestseller.
          Remember that on his first term as president, on March 30, 1981, there was an assassination attempt on his life. The bullet barely missed his heart. Reagan is the first U.S. president that lived after an assassination attempt. After this, Reagan gained the highest approval rating in the history of U.S. presidency, and was elected for a second term.

        Picture Trivia

          At the age of 12, Jet Li (Li Lian-jie) became world champion in wushu even though he faced opponents more than 10 years older than him. As an actor, Jet Li first appeared in the film Shaolin Temple (1982). He is renowned for playing the roles of Hwang Fei-hung and Fong Sai-yuk in Chinese films including the Once Upon a Time in China series.

          In Hollywood films, Jet Li was first seen as a villain in the Mel Gibson starrrer Lethal Weapon IV (1998). His first starring role was in the film Romeo Must Die (2000).

          In 2003, he starred with rapper DMX in Cradle 2 the Grave. In this film, Jet Li demonstrated his martial arts prowess when he fought UFC fighters Randy Couture, Hector Echavarria, Tito Ortiz, Mark Hicks, Chuck Liddell and Garrett Warren all at once inside the ring. He also faced Filipino-Irish martial arts expert Mark Dacascos, who played the villain’s role, at the end of the film.
