1901 – William Howard Taft (1857-1930) became the first civil governor of the Philippines. Taft also would later become the only person in history to have been both president (1909-1913) and chief justice (1921-1930) of the United States.
1912 – The Manila Hotel was inaugurated.
1946 – The United States recognized Philippine independence.

The
distinguished actors, James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll, were together in Claudine (1974), a film about Claudine
Price (portrayed by Diahann Carroll), a black Harlem woman who singlehandedly
raised her six children of two failed relationships. She found genuine love in
the person of a garbage collector named Rupert Marshall (James Earl Jones). The
movie, produced by Third World Films and released by 20th Century Fox, was one
of a few mainstream films where the cast were predominantly African-American
and and depicting a meaningful theme.
