UNANG LABAS

Unang labas ng Pilipino Komiks, Hunyo 14, 1947.

Ang Pilipino Komiks, na unang lumabas noong Hunyo 14, 1947, ang pangalawang babasahing tinawag na “komiks” at regular na naglalaman ng mga iginuhit na kuwento na lumabas sa sirkulasyon (Ang una ay ang Halakhak Komiks, Nobyembre 15, 1946).

Ang Pilipino Komiks ay ang unang komiks na inilimbag ng Ace Publication na itinatag ni Don Ramon Roces. Si Tony Velasquez ang nagbigay ng tugmang pangalan nito at naging unang patnugot. Sa unang labas, naglimbag ang Ace ng 10,000 kopya, na sa halagang 25 sentimos, ay kaagad naubos sa pamilihan.

Kasama sa unang labas ng Pilipino Komiks ay ang pinakamahabang sinubaybayang nobela sa komiks sa Pilipinas na DI-13 na inakda ng kapatid ni Tony Velasquez na si Damy at iginuhit ni Jesse Santos. Kasama rin ang Prinsesa Urduja ni Vicente Manansala, ang Makisig ni Amadeo Manalad, ang Lagim ni Cris Caguintuan, ang Daluyong ni Fred Carillo, ang Kalabog en Bosyo ni Larry Alcala, ang Lucas Malakas ni Jose Zabala Santos, at Ang Buhay ni Aldabes ni Hugo C. Yonzon Jr. Dito rin nagsimula ang dalawang-pahinang cartoon strip na Nanong Pandak ni Tony Velasquez. Sa komiks na ito rin lumabas ang kauna-unahang advertisement ng Pepsi Cola.

Naging lubhang matagumpay ang Pilipino Komiks, at mula rito nasundan pa ito ng mga ibang babasahin: Tagalog Klasiks (Hulyo 16, 1949), Hiwaga Komiks (Oktubre 11, 1950), Espesyal Komiks (Oktubre 20, 1952), at humigit-kumulang 20 iba pa. Dahil dito naging pinakamalaking publishing company ng babasahing pangmasa ang ACE sa Pilipinas nang panahong yaon. Mula sa panahon ng pamamayagpag ng mga unang komiks hanggang sa mailipat na ang pagmamay-ari nito sa Atlas Publications, hanggang sa unang bahagi ng 1980s ay itinuturing na “Ginintuang Panahon ng Komiks sa Pilipinas.”

Ang Pilipino Komiks ay ang pinakamatagal sa sirkulasyon na babasahin na umabot ng anim na dekada at nagkaroon ng mahigit 3,200 isyu, bagama’t mula noong 2004 hanggang 2011 ay naging Pilipino Illustrated Stories na ang pamagat nito.

1584 - The Royal Audiencia, the recognized “Supreme” court in the Philippines during the Spanish times held its first session in Manila.

1897 – Spanish troops attacked Aguinaldo’s headquarters on Mount Puray near Montalban, but were defeated and repulsed by the Filipino revolutionaries.

1941 – President Quezon signed the maternity-leave bill granting women in government service 60 days maternity leave with full pay in addition to the usual sick and vacation leaves. On this same day, Josefa Llanes-Escoda was elected President of the National Federation of Women’s Clubs in the Philippines.

1945 – Battle of Besang Pass, in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. Combined Filipino-American forces led by Lt. Colonel Manuel Enriquez was victorious against the Japanese 14th Area Army.

1958 – The Development Bank of the Philippines was established.

1981 – The Film Academy of the Philippines was established to give recognition and appreciation for significant efforts in improving the Filipino motion picture arts and science.

1991 – Biggest eruption of Mount Pinatubo, which is in record the second largest eruption in the 20th century.

1976 – Danny Seigle (full name Daniel Charles Yado Seigle), American-Filipino basketball player – in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. 

1978 – G. Toengi (full name Giselle Anne Toengi), Swiss-Filipino actress, dance diva, host and model – in New York.

Live-in, Igorot Style

          Centuries before the term “live-in” was ever mentioned in “modern” literature, the Igorots of Northern Luzon already practiced what can be described as sort of a trial relationship. The custom is associated with the traditional institution of the ulog. Each igorot village has an ulog. It is a hut with a single door opening. Here the girls of the village gather at night to sleep and to be visited by their suitors. The boy meets the girl he wants and they can sleep together and have sex. But they cannot get married until after the girl gets pregnant.

          To the Igorots, pregnancy is the true test of marital compatibility. Only after the girl gets pregnant can she be engaged to her lover. Then and only then can marriage arrangement be negotiated by their families.

FIRST ISSUE

In April 1957 the first issue of a monthly magazine in the Philippines with a title of Movie Fan came off the press. It contained news, stories and articles about movie stars in particular and the film industry in general. Actress Barbara Perez was its first cover girl.

The magazine Celebrity World, on the other hand, is a weekly publication of Mass Media Publishing Corporation. It contained articles about showbiz, lifestyle, art and culture, both on the local and international scene. Its first editor-in-chief and editor are Eliseo C. Taparan and Leonila R. Garcia respectively. The magazine was an offshoot of Movie Fan that underwent a facelift and broadened the scope of its contents.

The first issue that contained the title “Celebrity World” on its cover (although the logo and name Movie Fan was still included) appeared on February 17, 1994 for which Kris Aquino was the cover girl. The transition period continued up to the April 7, 1994 issue (Kristine del Rosario on the cover). The superscript “Movie Fan” was finally removed on the April 14, 1994 issue (Ina Raymundo on the cover). This is the legitimate first issue of Celebrity World.

UNANG LABAS

Si Flash Bomba ay orihinal na fictional superhero na katha ni Mars Ravelo at ay unang iginuhit ni Jim Fernandez at pagkatapos ay ni Nestor Malgapo. Una itong lumabas sa Tagalog Klasiks noong Abril 14, 1967.

Matapos likhain ni Mars Ravelo ang mga komiks character na Darna, Captain Barbell, Lastikman, Dyesebel, Bodying, Goro at Booma, naisip niyang lumikha naman ng isang higit na kakaibang obra, isang tinagurian niyang “fantastic character” na “pambihira at espesyal” na tinitiyak niyang kagigiliwan ng mambabasa.

Ang pangunahing tauhan ng kuwento ay si Roldan na bagama’t anak-mayaman ay isang lumpo dahil sa sakit na polio. Itinaya niya sa pakikipagsapalaran ang kaniyang buhay upang makakuha ng tatlong ginintuang buhok ng tikbalang upang mabago ang kaniyang kapalaran at matupad ang pangarap na maging isang crime fighter. Nagtagumpay siya at kalakip ng kapangyarihang taglay ng mga ginintuang buhok, nagawa niyang magbagong-anyo bilang Flash Bomba. Sa kaanyuan ni Flash Bomba, lumaki ang kaniyang mga palad at mga paa at nakalalakad siya kahit sa gilid ng mga pader. Bukod dito, natatawag niya ang isang kawan ng kabayong bundok at ang tikbalang sa sandaling kailanganin niya ang tulong ng mga ito.

Events that happened on April 14:

1617 – The Spanish fleet led by Juan Ronquillo defeated the Dutch fleet led by Admiral John Derickson in the Second Battle of Playa Honda off the coast of Zambales, averting another Dutch attack on the Philippines.

1898 – General Arcadio Maxilom, who took over command of the Katipuneros in Cebu after the assassination of Leon Kilat, successfully defeated the Spanish forces and captured the Tuburan town.

1947 – The first issue of Bulaklak (Hiyas ng Tahanan) was released by the Social & Commercial Press owned by Beatriz M. de Guballa.

1980 – The KADIWA Program, a brainchild project of then First Lady Imelda Marcos where low-income households can buy commodities five to 30 percent cheaper direct from the producers, was inaugurated at the Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI) Complex in Taguig.

1872 – Spanish Governor-General Rafael de Izquierdo established the Telegraph Practical School in the Philippines.

1941 – First flight of Asia’s first airline, the Philippine Airline (PAL), from Nielson Field in Makati to Baguio City, using a Beechcraft Model 18 NPC-54 and flown by pilot Paul Gunn.

          The novel Frankenstein (full title Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus) was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) about a creature made through unusual scientific experiments. It was written when Shelley was only 18 years old as a response to a challenge by her friends (including her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley) on who could write the most frightening horror story. The story was derived from Shelley’s dream about a scientist who was able to “create life” but afterwards was horrified of his creation. The name of the scientist was Dr. Frankenstein.
          The first edition of Frankenstein published in London in 1818 does not contained the author’s name. Shelley’s name appeared on the second edition, which came out in France in 1923. It is considered as one of the first science fiction novels in literary history.
          Do you know that many people mistakes Frankenstein as the monster? The title name is the scientist who created the monster. In the original story, the monster had no name.
          It was actor Boris Karloff who made the Frankenstein’s monster famous in the movies. He portrayed the monster in three films: Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939). Contrary to popular belief, however, Karloff was not the first actor to play the role, but Charles Ogle in the 1910 version of Frankenstein.
          Boris Karloff also played the role of the scientist in two films: House of Frankenstein (1944) at Frankenstein 1970 (1958). On the 150 anniversary of Frankenstein, Karloff appeared on the cover of Life magazine (March 15, 1968) at the age of 80 years old (SEE cover page).
