Pebrero 5 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Matapos makipagkutsabahan ang mga Amerikano sa mga Kastila sa kunwa-kunwariang “Battle of Manila Bay” noong Mayo 1, 1898, kung saan sa mga Amerikano sumuko ang mga Kastila noong December 10, 1898, gayong nagapi na sila ng Hukbo ni Aguinaldo noon pang Hunyo 9, 1898. Ang mga pangyayaring ito at ang pataksil na pamamaril ng mga Amerikano sa mga sundalong Filipino sa San Juan del Monte Bridge, noong Pebrero 4, 1899, ang naging mitsa ng Philippine-American War. Tinangka ni General Emilio Aguinaldo (1869-1964) na makipagpayapaan kay General Elwell Otis (1838-1909), noong Pebrero 5, 1899, subalit tumanggi itong magkaroon ng truce. Kaya napilitang magpahayag si General Aguinaldo ng “state of war” laban sa mga Amerikano. Batay sa pahayag ni General Otis: “Ang paglalaban, dahil nagsimula na, ay dapat magpatuloy hanggang sa malagim na wakas.” Ang Philippine-American War ay higit pang naging madugo kaysa sa Spanish-American War.

          Noong Pebrero 5, 1921, itinatag ang National Federation of Women’s Club. Ang layon ng samahan ay ang pagpapalawak ng karapatang pampulitika ng mga kababaihang Filipino.

1899 – Start of the Philippine-American War, with the shooting of a Filipino soldier at the San Juan del Monte Bridge. The shooting triggered encounters that spread to Paco and Sta. Ana, Manila.

          – General Maximino Hizon defeated the American forces in the Battle of Kalookan.

1916 – The Philippine National Bank was established to help in the development of the Philippine economy. It initially provided capital to develop the sugar industry and managed such companies as the Manila Railroad Company and the Manila Hotel.

1945 – In the on-going liberation of Manila, retreating Japanese forces massacred thousands of Filipino civilians and prisoners of war.

2006 – Stampede during the first anniversary celebration of ABS-CBN noontime show Wowowee at the PhilSports Arena (formerly ULTRA) in Pasig City resulted in 71 deaths and 957 injuries.

1945 – Start of the liberation of Manila as the American forces arrived in the city.

1968 – The first issue of Darna Komiks was released featuring the series “Darna at ang Babaeng Linta” (Darna and the Leech Woman”).

1975 – A Philippine Airline (PAL) HS-748 on a flight from Manila to Iligan City, with 28 passengers, four crew members and an air marshall aboard, crashed shortly after takeoff when its right engine caught fire, in Barangay Pulang Lupa, Las Piñas, killing everyone on board.

1802 – Mariano Crisostomo, lawyer, propagandist, Katipunan member, Malolos Congress delegate, and founder of Caja de Propaganda which collected contributions for the La Solidaridad – in Malolos, Bulacan. (d. May 11, 1913)

1543 – The Spanish expedition led by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos arrived in the Philippines. He named the archipelago “Las Islas Filipinas” in honor of Prince Phillip II (1556-1598) of Spain.

1818 – The Ilocos Province was divided into Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

1861 – Governor-general Jose Lemery Ibarrola Ney y Gonzalez assumed office. It was during his short term that national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was born.

1862 – The El Catolico Filipino, the first religious newspaper in the Philippines, was founded.

1902 – The Union Obrera Democratica, the first real labor federation in the Philippines, was organized at the Teatro Variedades in Sampaloc, Manila, and elected Isabelo de los Reyes as president.

Marvel Comics What If....?

          In February 1977, Marvel Comics started publishing the What If....?, a series of several comic books which explore the idea of “the road not taken,” or the possibility of an alternate future if events unfold differently. The initial 47 issues (1977-1984), which started with What If Spider-Man Had Joined the Fantastic Four? (February 1977), was told by the alien Uatu the Watcher. Thus, What If....? stories usually began with Uatu briefly recapping a notable event in the mainstream Marvel Universe, then indicating a particular point of divergence in that event. He would then demonstrate, by way of looking into a parallel reality, what could have happened if events had taken a different course from that point. It was cancelled after the October 1984 issue. Following the cancellation of the series, Marvel published a one-shot What If....?  Special (June 1988) with the story What If…. Iron Man Had Been a Traitor?

          The second What If....? series ran from 1989 to 1998 with a total of 144 issues.

Vol. 1 No.43 (What If Conan were Stranded in the 20th Century? February 1984),

NOTE: In the No. 43 issue, there are two errors in the cover:
the mark “1983” and the intransitive verb “were” should be “was” as Conan is singular.

          A six-comics What If....? one-shot releases came off the press on December 29, 2004, but label-dated February 2005, with such titles as What if…. Jessica Jones Had Joined the Avengers? and What…. If Doctor Doom Has Become the Things? Another six-comics What If....? one-shot issues were published the following year. Separate issues also keep appearing now and then. A special 200th issue was released bearing the question What If…. Norman Osborn Won the Siege of Asgard?”

Picture Trivia

          John Herschel Glenn Jr was the first American astronaut to have orbited the Earth (aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962), and the fifth man and third American in Space. Glenn was a former Marine Corps fighter pilot before joining the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) “Mercury Program,” the original NASA astronaut group. In 1990, he was inducted in the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Glenn is also the oldest man to travel in space, and the only astronaut to be member of both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs.

Events that happened on February 1

1814 – The most destructive eruption of Mayon Volcano, when the towns of Camalig, Cagsawa, and Budiao, and half of Guinobatan, were laid in ruins by heavy lava flow, and killing around 12,000 residents.

1854 – Issuance of the first stamp in the Philippines bearing the portrait of Queen Isabela II of Spain.

1904 – William Howard Taft (1857-1930), the first civil governor of the Philippines, was succeeded by Luke Edward Wright (1846-1922). Taft would later become the 27th president of the U.S. (1909-1913).

1934 – The Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) and Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) were declared National Tree and National Flower, respectively, by American Governor-General Frank Murphy (1831-1959).

1939 – The Philippine Constabulary was established as a police force independent of the Philippine Army.

1987 – Colonel Rolando Cabauatan led rebel soldiers in a coup d’etat against Pres. Corazon Aquino’s “de facto” government.

Ang Lastikman ni Mars Ravelo

Unang lumabas ang Lastikman na kinatha ni Mars Ravelo para sa Aliwan Komiks noong Disyembre 7, 1964. Ito ay iginuhit ni Mar T. Santana. Si Lastikman ay isang nilalang na mula sa ibang planeta na may kapangyarihang hubugin ang katawan sa ano mang hugis na naisin niya. Isinapelikula ito at ang karakter ay ginampanan ni Von Serna. Makalipas ang 41 taon, nagkaroon muli ng pelikulang Lastikman, na ginampanan naman ni Vic Sotto. Pinagtiyap na sa dalawang pelikula, ang mga artistang gumanap na Lastikman ay may initials na “V. S.”

Ang sumunod na pakikipagsapalaran ni Lastikman ay nagsimula naman sa Holiday Komiks Blg. 134 noong Abril 27, 1968, na iginuhit naman ni Vir Aguirre.

          Si Amalia Fuentes at Romeo Vasquez ay unang nagtambal sa pelikulang  Pretty Boy noong 1957 sa ilalim ng Vera-Perez Pictures na isang sister company ng Sampaguita Pcitures. Ito ay tinampukan nina Van de Leon, Rosa Mia, Amalia Fuentes at Romeo Vasquez bilang “Pretty Boy” sa ilalim ng direksiyon ni Armando Garces. Halaw ang pelikula sa kuwento ni Rico Bello Omagap.                  

          Naging magkabiyak sila at ikinasal noong 1965, subalit matapos lamang ang humigit-kumulang tatlong taon, sila ay nagkaroon ng break-up, at tuluyang naghiwalay noong September 30, 1969. Nagkaroon sila ng isang anak, si Liezl.
