1611 – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) was established by the Dominicans initially as a college seminary. After five years it became the Colegio de Santo Tomas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, and in 1645, it was declared a university by Pope Innocent X (1574-1655).
1888 – Jose Rizal arrived in San Francisco, California, on board the English steamer Belgic. The first thing he noted upon his arrival was the racial prejudice prevalent in the country.
1972 – Portraitist and landscape painter Fernando Amorsolo was declared the first National Artist by President Ferdinand Marcos at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
