I submitted this article (earlier published in Mr. & Ms. March 4, 1997 issue) to MOD hoping it will get published anew to reiterate the “question” and concern regarding the Philippine Sarus Crane.

          Noong Oktubre 29, 1901, ang Insular Museum of Ethnology, Natural History and Commerce ay itinatag sa Manila sa pamamagitan ng Act No. 284 ng Philippine Commission. Ang institusyong ito ay naging ganap na National Museum of the Philippines noong Pebrero 12, 1988.

          Noong Oktubre 29, 1875, ang Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy ay itinatag sa University of Santo Tomas sa pamamagitan ng isang royal decree kasabay ng reorganisasyon ng pamantasan.

          Binuo ang Insular Museum of Ethnology, Natural History and Commerce noong Oktubre 29, 1901. Sa pamamagitan naman ng Republic Act 8492, ang National Museum ay naging isang independent institution noong Pebrero 12, 1988.

          Ang Filipino superhero character na si Captain Boom ay nilikha ni Mars Ravelo, na iginuhit naman ng kaniyang anak na Ric, para sa United Komiks noong 1966.

          Ginawa itong isang teleserye ng ABS-CBN Channel 2 bilang unang handog ng Komiks Presents: Kapitan Boom noong 2008. Ginampanan ni Jon Avila ang papel na Kapitan Boom samantalang si Jay-R (Siaboc) ang gumanap sa alter-ego ni Kapitan Boom na si Lance Mercado.

          In 1980, Olivia Newton-John declined the role offered to her in the film Can’t Stop the Music by the Village People, and instead made the film Xanadu. Unfortunately, Xanadu, which was expected to launch Newton-John as a solo star didn’t make good in the American box office.
          The title of the film Xanadu was derived from the name of the summer capital of Kublai Khan’s Yuan Dynasty in China. This was taken from the poem of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) Kublai Khan.

Ang Buwan ng Oktubre

          Ang Oktubre o October ang ikasampung buwan sa Gregorian Calendar. Mapapansing ang salitang English na “October” ay halaw sa Latin na octo na ang ibig sabihin ay “walo.” Ito ay dahil sa sinaunang kalendaryong Romano, ito ang ikawalong buwan ng taon.

          Noong panahon ng Roman emperor na si Tiberius (42 B.C.-A.D. 37), tinangkang palitan ang pangalan ng buwan ng October na Livius (bilang parangal kay Livia, ang ina ng emperador) katulad ng pagpapalit sa Quintilis (na naging July bilang parangal kay Julius Caesar) at Sextilis (na naging August bilang parangal kay Augustus Caesar). Datapuwa’t tumanggi si Emperor Tiberius.

          Nang maging emperador si Domitian (A.D. 51-96), tinangka niyang ipangalan sa kaniya ang buwang ito subalit hindi naman ito nagtagal.

          Noong A.D. 183, muling tinangkang palitan ang tawag sa buwan na maging Hercules bilang parangal kay Emperor Commodus (A.D. 180-192) na tumatawag sa kaniyang sarili sa pangalang ito, subalit hindi ito naipatupad.

          Ang mga bulaklak ng buwan ng Oktubre ay calendula at cosmos. Ang opal at tourmaline naman ang mga birthstones.

          Ang bantog na Lansones Festival sa isla ng Camiguin ay ginaganap sa buwan ng Oktubre

FIRST ISSUE

The first issue of Genetix was released by Marvel Comics (UK imprint) in a limited edition on October 1993, although it was first published under the title Codename: Genetix #1 on January 1993. Genetix is a team of fictional superheroes conceptualized by  Andy Lanning, Graham Marks at Phil Gascoine.

Under the first issue story title “Deadly Harvest,” the team of “genetically enhanced renegades” Base, Stinger, Shift, Ridge were introduced, and fought with another team (first seen in Dark Guard #1) composed of Death’s Hear II, Killpower, Albion, Motormouth.

          Noong Oktubre 1, 1901, ang Saligang-Batas ng Iglesia Filipina Indepediente na itinatag nina Gregorio Aglipay at Isabelo de los Reyes ay na buo at naitatag.

          Nabuo ang Philippine News Agency (PNS) noong Oktubre 1, 1950. Ito ang unang news agency na naitatag sa Pilipinas.

          Ginanap sa Pilipinas noong Oktubre 1, 1975 ang pangatlong paglalaban ng mga heavyweight boxers na sina Muhammad Ali at Joe Frazier na tinaguriang “Thrilla in Manila.” Nagwagi si Ali sa pamamagitan ng technical knockout sa ika-14 na round.

Picture Trivia

          Do you who voiced Mickey Mouse when it was first made into talking animation? It was Walt Disney (1901-1966) himself. John James “Jimmy” MacDonald (1906-1991) took over in 1946, But Disney again did the voice over from 1955 to 1959 for the Mickey Mouse Club television series.
          It was Ubbe Eeert "Ub" Iwerks (1901-1971) who conceptualized the popular character though the initial credit for its creation was given to Disney.

1571 – Spanish troops led by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi occupied Manila.

1583 – First great fire engulfed Manila.

1861 – Casa Moneda de Manila, the first minting plant in the Philippines, was established. It produced gold coins in three denominations: 4 pesos (80 reales), 2 pesos (40 reales), and 1 peso (20 reales). The word “FILIPINAS” was first inscribed in these coins.

1927 – Coca-Cola was officially introduced in the Philippines as a commodity although in was first imported in the early 1920s.

Larawang Tribiya

          Sina Robin Padilla at Angelika dela Cruz ang mga pangunahing bituin sa Hari ng Selda (2002), ang unang pelikulang kanilang pinagsamahan. Ang pelikula ayon kay Padilla ay tila larawan ng tunay niyang buhay dahil 70 hanggang 80 porsyento nito ay batay sa kaniyang mga naging karanasan sa bilangguan. Si Padilla ay nakulong ng tatlong taon, at sa mga panahong ito siya lumipat ng pananampalataya sa relihiyong Islam.

          Si Padilla ay kasama ni Deo Fajardo Jr, ang mentor niya at discoverer at director ng pelikula, sa pagsulat ng script ng Hari ng Selda. Marami sa eksena ng pelikula ay kinunan mismo sa loob ng bilangguan sa Muntinglupa.

          Para naman kay Angelika, ito ang kauna-unahang pelikula kung saan mayroon siyang pakikipaghalikan sa kaniyang katambal.
