          Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) wrote the novel The Dangerous Summer between the years 1959 to 1960. It was serialized in three issues of Life starting on the September 5, 1960 issue (SEE attached Life cover page). The novel was about a bullfighter name Antonio Ordoñez, the son of another matador Cayetano Ordoñez, which was on Hemingway’s earlier novel The Sun Also Rises (1926).
          In June 1985, Charles Scribner’s Sons published the edited version of the 75,000-word manuscript of The Dangerous Summer in book form. This was 24 years after the death of Hemingway.

          Do you know that Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida joined a beauty contest? When Lollobrigida was 20 years old, she joined the Italia Beauty Pageant and placed third overall. The winner was Lucia Bose and the runner-up was Gianna Maria Canale. Both of them, like Lollobrigida, also tried to be an actress, but neither reach the success that Lollobrigida attained.
          In 1951, lollobrigida made five films: A Tale of Five Cities, The Young Caruso, Four Ways Out, Love I Haven’t... But... But at Attention! Bandits!

Ang Buwan ng Setyembre

          Ang September o Setyembre ay ang ikasiyam na buwan sa Gregorian Calendar na nagtataglay ng 30 araw. Ang pangalang "September" ay halaw sa salitang Latin na septem na ang ibig sabihin ay “pito” sapagkat ito ang pangpitong buwan sa sinaunang Roman Calendar. Ang "Setyembre" naman ay mula sa salitang Kastila na Setiembre.
          Noong panahon ni Emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar, A.D. 12 – 41) tinawag ang buwang itong Germanicus bilang parangal sa ama ng emperador na si Germanicus Caesar, isang bantog na Romanong heneral. Datapuwa’t hindi nagtagal ang katawagang ito.
          Ang birthstone para sa buwan ng September ay ang sapphire samantalang ang bulaklak na sumasagisag sa buwang ito ay ang morning glory.

Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

Ang El Renacimiento, isa popular na pahayagang itinatag ni Martin Ocampo at inilimbag sa wikang Kastila ay unang lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Setyembre 1, 1899. Nakilala ang pahayagang ito sa pagtuligsa sa pamamalakad ng mga mananakop na Amerikano sa Pilipinas.

          Noong Setyembre 1, 1900, Itinatag ang Civil Service sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng Act No. 5 ng Taft Commission.

          Ang Philippine Normal School ay itinatag sa pamamagitan ng Act No. 416 noong Setyembre 1, 1901. Nang lumaon, ito ay naging Philippine Normal College (PNC), ang tanging kolehiyo na pinalalakad ng estado na nakalaan sa pag-aaral ng mga guro.

          Ang Baguio (na bahagi ng lalawigan ng Benguet) ay idineklarang isang lungsod sa pamamagitan ng Act No. 1963 noong Setyembre 1, 1909. Ang lungsod, na itinuturing na summer capital ng Pilipinas, ay dinisenyo at binuo ng arkitektong Amerikanong si Daniel Burnham.

          The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the first nuclear-powered submarine ever built. It was launched on September 30, 1954, under the helm of Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson. The submarine was designed by John Burnham (1917-1957). On February 4, 1957, the Nautilus had traveled 60,000 nautical miles, matching the same distance traveled by the fictional Nautilus in the novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) by Jules Verne.
          On August 3, 1958, under Commander William R. Anderson (1921-2007), the Nautilus became the first submarine to travel under the waters of the North Pole.
