          Do you know that Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida joined a beauty contest? When Lollobrigida was 20 years old, she joined the Italia Beauty Pageant and placed third overall. The winner was Lucia Bose and the runner-up was Gianna Maria Canale. Both of them, like Lollobrigida, also tried to be an actress, but neither reach the success that Lollobrigida attained.
          In 1951, lollobrigida made five films: A Tale of Five Cities, The Young Caruso, Four Ways Out, Love I Haven’t... But... But at Attention! Bandits!

Ang nobelang-komiks na “Kurdapya”
tampok sa taklob-pahina ng
Tagalog Klasiks Blg. 127, Mayo 15, 1954.

          Isang nakatutuwang nobelang-komiks ang “Kurdapya” (1953-1954) na pinagtulungang isulat nina Pablo S. Gomez at Carlos Gonda para sa Tagalog Klasiks. Dalawa rin bantog na ilustrador, sina Nestor Redondo at Afredo Alcala, ang naitokang gumuhit ng kuwentong ito tungkol sa isang tila pangit na batang babae na naging isang magandang binibini, si Kurdapya.

          Ginawa itong pelikula ng Sampaguita Films noong 1955, na nagtampok sa tambalang Gloria Romero (bilang Kurdapya) at Ric Rodrigo. Kasama rin sa pelikula sina Dolphy, Ramon Revilla, Aruray, Eddie Garcia, Rebecca del Rio at Etang Discher.

          According to porn actress Linda Lovelace (real name Linda Susan Boreman, 1949-2002), although she enjoyed the sex with the countless men in her life, the only two men she “made love” were David Winters, which she described in her autobiography The Intimate Diary of Linda Lovelace (1974) as “the man in my life, and Larry Marchiano, her second husband which she had two children.

          Lovelace is well-known in her portrayal in the porno film Deep Throat (1972). It is said that she began the trend of acomoclitism or pubic depilation in porno films, which had been the preference of most porno film enthusiasts since then. The film Deep Throat also showcased her fellatio technique, which is now called “deep throat.”
          The film Deep Throat, which Lovelace starred, on the other hand, is now considered as the “most successful x-rated film of all time.” The film, with a full length of 61 minutes, had a production cost of barely 50,000 dollars. Today, it is estimated that the film already accumulated more than half-a-billion dollars in revenue. Despite this, however, according to Lovelace’s book Ordeal (1980), she was only paid 1,250 dollars for the film and all of it was taken by his live-in manager at the time, Chuck Taylor. Lovelace died in 2002, still unable to benefit from the monumental success of Deep Throat, not even a tiny amount from its profits.

          In the Times Guide to Films list of “100 Landmark Movies of All Time,” Deep Throat was labeled among the classic films like Citizen Kane. The film even became the inspiration for the code name of Rob Woodward’s secret informant in the Watergate Scandal, FBI agent William Mark Felt.

Ang Buwan ng April

          Ang April ay pang-apat na buwan sa Gregorian Calendar. Alam niyo ba kung paano ito nabigyan ng pangalan? Ayon sa mga etymologists, ang pangalan ng buwan ay halaw sa salitang Latin na apririre, na ang ibig sabihin ay “buksan,” dahil sa buwan na ito nagsisimulang mamukadakad at bumububukas ang mga talulot ng mga bulaklak. Kinuha rin ang pangalan ng buwan sa lumang kalendaryong Romano na Aprilis na noo’y ikalawang buwan ng taon.

          Isa pang maaaring pinanggalingang etimolohiya ng pangalan ng buwang ito ay mula sa salitang Sanskrit na aparah na tumutukoy bilang “pagsunod sa hulihan” (ng unang buwan). Hiniram ito ng wikang Old French at naging avrill. Mula rito ay naging Avril ito sa Middle English. Sa Pilipino, tinatawag nating "Abril" ang buwang ito, na hiniram natin sa mga Kastila.

          Ang buwan ng April ay nagsisimula sa April Fool’s Day (April 1) kung saan ang pangloloko sa kapuwa ay naging isang tila tradisyong pinahihintulutang gawin sa araw na ito.

          Ang sweet pea at daisy ang mga mahalagang bulaklak sa buwan ng Abril, samantalang ang birthstone sa buwang ito ay ang diamante, ang pinakamatigas na likas na bagay na matatgpuan sa daigdig.

1887 – The first issue of La Opinion, a Spanish newspaper founded by Julian de Pozo and Jesus Polanco, and edited by Carlos Peñaranda came out of the press.

1898 – Leon Kilat (real name Pantaleon Villegas) led a rebellion against the Spanish authorities in Cebu.

1901 – General Emilio Aguinaldo took the oath of allegiance to the United States.

1902 – Jose Ma. Romero founded the publication El Mercantil.

          Ang Academy-award-nominated documentary na Deliver Us From Evil (2006) ay naglalahad ng istorya ng pedophile priest na si Oliver O’Grady. Batay sa documentary, alam ng kaniyang superior na si Cardinal Roger Mahony na si O’Grady ay isang pedophilic sexual abuser subalit hindi niya ito inilayo sa mga bata. Sa loob ng 20 taon, hindi mabilang ang mga batang biktima ng seksuwal na pang-aabuso ni O’Grady kabilang na ang isang siyam na buwang sanggol.

          Noong 1984, isinara ng Stockton Police ang imbestigasyon kay O’Grady ng pang-aabuso sa mga bata nang mangako si Bishop Mahony na gagawan ng aksyon ang sumbong laban dito. Subalit hindi ito nangyari, sa halip inilipat-lipat lang ng parish si O’Grady kung saan ipinagpatuloy niya ang pang-aabuso sa mga bata. Si Mahony naman ay na-promote bilang Cardinal at ginawang Archibishop ng Los Angeles, ang pinakamalaking diocese sa U.S.

          Unang nahatulan si O’Grady noong 1993 ng 14 na taong pagkabilanggo sa apat na bilang ng “lewd and lascivious acts” sa dalawang magkapatid na sina John at James Howard na kaniyang inabuso mula sa edad tatlong taong gulang.

          Ang mga paruparo ay tanda ng isang maaliwalas na kapaligiran. Alam niyo ba na ang paruparo ay matatagpuan sa lahat ng sangkalupaan o continent maliban sa isa? Ito ay sa Antarctica.

          Ang pinakamaraming uri ay matatagpuan sa mga tropical na lugar katulad ng Indonesia, Papua New Guinea at Pilipinas. Sa buong kapuluan ng Pilipinas ay matatagpuan ang humigit-kumulang 940 species at mahigit 1,600 subspecies ng paru-paro, na maituturing na isa sa pinakamarami sa buong daigdig.

          Kabilang sa pinakamaganda at pinakamaraming kulay na paru-paro ay ang Parthenos sylvia at Idaea leuconoe, na parehong endemic o matatagpuan lamang sa Pilipinas.

          Isang pang endemic species ay ang swallow-tailed butterfly na may pangalang-agham (scientific name) na Papilio chikae. Ito ay matatagpuan lamang sa mga bulubundukin ng Northern Luzon. Sa kasamaang-palad ang uring ito ay nanganganib nang maubos. Ang pinakamabigat na dahilan ay ang walang habas na pagtrotroso na siyang sumisira sa kanilang mga tirahan. Ang Papilio chikae ay nabibilang sa endangered list ng International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at sa Appendix I ng Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Batay sa katayuang ito, mahigpit na ipinagbabawal ang paghuli ng uri ng paru-parong ito.
