UNANG LABAS

Ang kauna-unahang arawang pahayagan sa wikang English – The Manila Times – ay itinatag ng Englishman na si Thomas Gowan noong Oktubre 11, 1898, upang tugunan ang pangangailangan ng isang pahayagan para sa mga sundalong Amerikano. Maraming beses nagpalipat-lipat ang pagmamay-ari ng pahayagang ito. Nagkaroon ng pagwewelga ng mga manggagawang Filipino noong 1918 at matapos ito ay nabili ni Mauel L. Quezon ang pahayagan. Noong 1921, ibinenta ito ni Quezon at naging pag-aari ni George H. Fairchild. Nabili naman ito ni Jacob Rosenthal noong 1927, nang magsara ito noong Marso 15, 1930, si Lorenzo Thibault na ang may-ari.

Sa kabilang banda, noong February 1945, matapos ang Ikalawang Digmaaang Pandaigdig, naging pag-aari ito ni Rafael Roces, at noong Mayo 27, 1945, inilimbag ni Roces ang unang labas ng The Sunday Times.  Mula sa pahayagang ito muling nagbalik sa sirkulasyon ang The Manila Times noong Setyembre 5, 1945.

UNANG LABAS         

Ang unang labas ng Hiwaka Komiks

“Berdugo ng mga Anghel” ni Mars Ravelo
na iginuhit ni Elpidio Torres.

Ang Hiwaga Komiks ay unang lumabas noong Oktubre 11, 1950. Ito ay inilimbag ng ACE Publications na pinatnugutan ni Tony Velasquez. Ito ang pangwalong komiks na lumabas sa sirkulasyon sa Pilipinas. Kabilang sa laman ng unang isyu ng Hiwaga Komiks ay ang mga sumusunod: “Berdugo ng mga Anghel” na isinulat ni Mars Ravelo at iginuhit ni Elpidio Torres (na siya ring nasa unang taklob-pahina), “Ang Bihag ni Lusiper” ni Pedro Villanueva, “Ang Multo sa Pasong Balite” na isinulat ni Ladislao Bella Subang at iginuhit ni Efren de Leon, “Ang Signo” ni Nestor Redondo, “Berong Barbero” ni Teny Henson, “Carmela” na isinulat ni Pablo Gomez at iginuhit ni Ben Alcantara, “Kayamanan sa Loob ng Balong Kastila” ni Jose Caluag, “Kasunduan ng Magkaibigan” ni Angel Ad. Santos, at “Tipin” ni Larry Alcala.

Noong huling bahagi ng 1960s, naging pag-aari ito ng Pilipino Komiks Incorporated, na naging Atlas Publishing Company.

Oktubre 11 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Oktubre 11, 1719, si Governor-General Mauel de Bustillo Bustamante, ay dinumog at pinaslang ng mga mamamayang sinulsulan ng mga prayleng Jesuit. Nauna rito, ipinadakip at ipinakulong niya ang archisbishop ng Manila.

1892 – Pio Kabahar, Visayan playwright, actor, composer and newspaperman – in Cebu.

1934 – Jose Nergua Nolledo, lawyer, constitutionalist and author – in Inagawan, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

1987 – Jason Francisco (full name Jason Veron Marasigan Francisco), actor-comedian – in Calapan, Mindoro.

          Aside from his short height, Marlon Brando was tailor-made for the role of Napoleon Bonaparte in the film Desiree (1954). His leading ladies for the film were Jeans Simmons (as Desiree Clary) and Merle Oberon (as Josephine). It was said that Brando didn’t take his role as Bonaparte seriously, but Desiree earned more in the box office than his other 1954 film, On the Waterfront, where he won the Academy Best Actor Award.

          Noong Oktubre 2, 1939, Napagwagian ni Ceferino Garcia (1906-1981) ang World Middleweight Boxing Championship nang patulugin niya ang Amerikanong si Alfredo “Fred” Apostoli (1913-1973) sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang tinatawag na “bolo punch.”

1863 – Rafael Crame, first director of the Philippine Constabulary – in Malabon (then part of Rizal province) (d. January 1, 1927).

1923 – Artemio Marquez (full name Artemio Octavio Marquez Sr), writer and film director –  (June 20, 2001).

1936 – Sonny Belmonte (full name Fernando Feliciano Racimo Belmonte Jr), lawyer and Speaker of the House of Representatives – in Tondo, Manila.

1946 – Khryss Adalia, writer, actor and director (d. October 13, 2008).


1968 – Benjie Paras (full name Venancio Johnson Paras Jr), basketball player, the first PBA player to win the Rookie of the Year (1989) and Most Valuable Player (1989 and 1999) awards on the same year, and actor – in Caloocan City.

          Do you know that the original Charlie’s Angels Kate Jackson (as Sabrina Duncan), Jacklyn Smith (as Kelly Garrett) and Farrah Fawcett (as Jill Munroe) were together only for the first season of the series? This was in 1976-1977 when the program was Number 1 on the ratings. Fawcett left after Season 1 and only has guest appearances in Seasons 3 and 4. In total, the three original Angels were only together in 29 episodes.

          At the opening of the 2003 MTV Video Music Award, Britney Spears, Madonna, Christina Aguillera and Missy Elliott were in the opening number. In the middle of the performance, Madonna kissed Spears and Aguillera on the lips. The kiss between Madonna and Spears left a sterling mark on the media. It was considered by MTV as the “Number-One Opening Moments” in the history of MTV.

1809 – As a consequence of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) installing his brother Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844) as King of Spain, all Spanish colonies including the Philippines are made integral part of Spain and, as such, Filipinos were given the privileges of Spanish citizenship and representation in the Spanish Cortes.

1843 – Sergeant Samaniego, leader of the Tagalog Mutiny, was executed at Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park).

1865 – The Escuela Normal de Maestros, a school for teachers, was establsihed in Manila.

1960 – Pres. Carlos P. Garcia laid the cornerstone of the Philippine Atomic Research Center (PARC) on a 9-hectare land leased from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

1987 – Day of the Mendiola Massacre. 17 farmers and students were shot and killed and dozens wounded when President Corazon C. Aquino ordered the dispersal of the rally in Mendiola Bridge, near Malacañang Palace that turned violent. The demonstrators, mostly from the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas headed by Jaime Tadeo, intended to talk to the president about her land reform program, but were met with barbed wires, fire trucks, and armed anti-riot police.

1988 – General Fidel V. Ramos was appointed Secretary of National Defense by President Corazon C. Aquino.

2011 – Danica Flores Magpantay won the Ford Supermodel of the World competition, the first Filipina to bag the title.

Tawag sa English ng mga Isda

          Alam niyo ba kung ano sa English ang isdang dalagang bukid? Ang mamula-mulang dalagang-bukid ay tinatawag sa English na red caesio (Pinjalo typus), samantalang ang nagkukulay malaginto ay tinatawag na golden caesio (Caesio chrysozonus).

          Hindi man karapat-dapat, isang isda ang ipinangalan sa unang bayani ng Pilipinas – si Lapu-Lapu. Ang katumbas ng isdang lapu-lapu sa English ay grouper. Maraming uri ng grouper, dalawa dito ay ang white-lined grouper (pangalang-agham: Anyperodon leucogrammicus) at wavy-lined grouper (Epinephelus undulosus), subalit karaniwang tinatawag sila sa Pilipinas na lapu-lapu o di kaya’y dinudugtungan ng pang-uri, katulad ng lapu-lapung guhit, lapu-lapung bato o pulang lapu-lapu.

          Ang galunggong ay binansagang “Cory fish” dahil lubhang tumaas ang mga bilihin noong panahon ng dating pangulong Corazon "Cory" Aquino na ang mga mahihirap ay hindi na halos makabili ng isdang galunggong. Ang galunggong sa English ay round scad (Decapterus macrosoma).

          May uri ng kanduli o sea catfish ang matatagbuan lamang sa baybay-dagat na malapit sa Manila. Ito ang Manila sea catfiish (Arius manillensis). Kanduli rin ang tawag sa green sea catfish (Arius thalassinus). Hito naman ang tawag sa fresh-water catfish (Clarias batrachus).

          Ang mga iba’t-ibang uri ng mackerel ay mayroong kaniya-kaniyang tawag sa Tagalog: Ang striped mackerel (Rastrelliger chrysozonus) ay alumahan, ang short-bodied mackerel (Rastrelliger brachyosomus) ay hasa-hasa, at ang Spanish mackerel (Cybium commerson) ay tangigi.

          Ganun din naman ang iba’t-ibang uri ng herring: Ang deep-bodied herring (Sardinella perforata) ay lapad, ang fimbriated herring (Sardinella fimbriata) ay tunsoy, at ang big-eyed herring (Ilisha hoevenii).

          Narito ang iba pang English equivalent ng mga pangalan ng mga isda: Asuhos (whiting), bangus (milkfish), bisugo (nemipterid), kabang (croaker), labahita (surgeon fish), maya-maya (snapper), sapsap (slipmouth), at tsabita (moonfish).

          When Marlon Brando (1924-2004) won the Academy Best Actor Award for the film Godfather in 1972, he asked Sacheen Littlefeather, a native Apache Indian, to read his non-acceptance speech. Brando did not accept the award in protest for the bad treatment of American Indians by the American film industry. He is the second actor that refused to accept the Academy Award (the first was George C. Scott). The following year, Brando was again nominated for the Best Actor plum for his performance in the film Last Tango in Paris, but Jack Lemmon won the award for the film Save the Tiger.
