Popular Yuletide Articles

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 28 No. 32, December 7, 2004

Three short but popular articles for the Yuletide Season.

“Therefore the LORD said: ‘Inasmuch as these people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men, therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work among this people, a marvelous work and a wonder; for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.’” – The Book of Isaiah 29:13-14, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.

Paradise Lost: Environmental Crisis

MOD Filipina Vol. 24 No. 1057, December 6, 1991
On the cover: Martina Campos Asuncion

This article, “Pardise Lost: Environmental Crisis,” was written 26 years ago, but the lingering questions remained blunt and relevant. Mindanao, the once called “Promised Land,” now perennially flooded whenever it rains. This is because its once bountiful forests are almost denuded. Similar situation can be seen throughout the country.

“Many shepherds have ruined My vineyards and trampled the plants in my field. They have turned my field into a desert that is wilted and dead. The whole country is an empty desert, because no one who lives there cares.” – Jeremiah 12:10-11, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

The American Dream

Celebrity World Vol. 3 No. 174, December 5, 1994
On the cover: Angelique Lazo

President Rodrigo Duterte is not alone in his allergy of American imperialism. Those who study history well and scrutinize the many mirages created by the so-called “American Dream,” know the darkness and sinisterness behind the most powerful nation in the world. This article, “The American Dream,” was written 23 years ago when Bill Clinton was president of the US, but its essay and significance, the reality and stigma, remains to date.

“The second beast forced all people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to have a mark on their right hand or on their forehead. No one could buy or sell without this mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”  - Revelation 13:16-17, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

Fruit Cake

MOD Vol. 43 No. 1900, December 2012

What a way to start the December post – an article on “Fruit Cake.”

“The following are the regulations for the fellowship offerings presented to the LORD. If a man makes this offerings as a thanksgiving offering to GOD, he shall present, together with the animal to be sacrificed, an offering of bread made without yeast: either thick loaves made of flour mixed with olive oil or thin cakes brushed with olive oil or cakes made of flour mixed with olive oil.” – Leviticus 7:11-12, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

Poem: Purpose

PURPOSE

Fire from a distant star;
Light from amber’s spark,
Amidst these radiances I shall wake
To alter the world for progress’ sake.

Stone shoulders I may not have;
Let the power of my spirit alone
Answer the weight I carry,
Beyond the decades shall stand unweary.

(Written on November 29, 1982. Originally untitled, the poem was the opening verses for my BSCE college thesis titled “Flat Slab: Building Without Beams.” Notice the first letter of each line spells F L A T S L A B.)
The “flat slab” is a reinforced concrete slab floor supported directly by the columns without intermediate beams or girders.

“To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see.” – The Letter to the Hebrew 11:1, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

“The wicked person uses evil like a tool. He plans ways to take everything from the poor. He destroys the poor with lies, even when the poor person is in the right..... This will continue until GOD pours His Spirit from above upon us. Then the desert will be like a fertile field and the fertile field like a forest. Justice will be found even in the desert, and fairness will be found in the fertile fields.” – Isaiah 32:7, 15 and 16, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

“LORD, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are GOD..... For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it past, and like a watch in the night..... So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – The Book of Psalms 90:1, 2, 4 and 12, Holy Bible, The New King James Version.
