Tsunami: When the Sea Becomes a Monster

MOD Vol. 37 Nos. 1740 and 1741, February 25 and March 4, 2005
On the left cover: Raquel Denise “Kelly” Misa
On the right cover: Romina “Mina” Zamora

As a consequence of the megathrust Magnitude 9.0 earthquake that hit the west coast of Northern Sumatra some 225 kilometers south-southeast of Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, last December 26, 2004, a giant tsunami was generated that reached as far away as the eastern coast of Africa. The Philippines, though in a lesser scale, was not apart from such disaster. What can we really do? Read on.

“LORD, the seas raise, the seas raise their voice. The seas raise up their pounding waves. The sound of the water is loud; the ocean waves are powerful, but the LORD above is much greater.” – Psalms 93:3-4, The Everyday Bible, New Century Version.

Flashback: Tsunami Survivor Jet Li Leads Relief Concert

MOD magazine Vol. 37 No. 1745, April 1, 2005
On the cover: Toni Gonzaga

After the Indian Ocean-wide tsunami generated by the megathrust Magnitude 9.0 Indonesian earthquake (December 26, 2004), I heard from the news that Jet Li survived the disaster. He was vacationing in the Maldives with his family when the deadliest tsunami on record hit. I started googling about it and wrote a short article for MOD. It took a while but it was published two and a half months after.

Picture Trivia
The Yellow-Crested Cockatoo (scientific name Cacatua sulphurea) is a bird found in the forest of East Timor and in the islands of Selawesi and Lesser Sundas in Indonesia. It is also called Lesser Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo.
Do you know that the pet bird of Detective Tony Baretta (played by Robert Blake) in the television series, Baretta (1975-1978), was a Yellow-Crested Cockatoo? The name of the said bird was Lessor.
The Yellow-Crested Cockatoo is a critically endangered species, which is considered in the brink of extinction due to illegal bird trade. Presently, it estimated that there are only about 2,500 birds remaining.
