          I tagged it “Traditional Christmas” because most of us know that December 25 is not really the day of birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It’s the wrong day, month and year of beginning. Christmas around the world, however, have been observed for centuries on this day.

          Daily, weekly and monthly publications follow the same the tradition, and their covers speak of the annual event.

Nobyembre 23 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Nobyembre 23, 1898, isang lupon na binubuo ng 10 katao at pinamumunuan ni Felipe Agoncillo ang naglunsad ng paghahayag sa buong daigdig ng kakayahan ng mga Filipino na bumuo at pamunuan ang sarili nitong malayang pamahalaan kaalinsabay ng pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga pamahalaan ng America, Australian, England, France at Japan. Datapuwa’t habang ito ay ginagawa, pataksil na nakipagkasundo ang America sa Spain at nilagdaan ang Treaty of Paris (December 10, 1898). Sa halagang 20-million dollars na binayaran ng America sa Spain, binitawan ng mga Kastila ang pag-angkin sa Pilipinas at iba pa nitong koloniya sa kamay ng mga Amerikano.

          Nang umaga ng Nobyembre 23, 2009, naganap ang kalagim-lagim na Maguindanao Massacre (na tinatawag ding Ampatuan Massacre). Dinukot at pinatay ang 58 katao, kabilang ang 34 na mamamahayag, sa Ampatuan, Maguindanao. Ito ang itinuturing na pinakamalagim na pagpatay ng mga sibilyan sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas mula ng matapos ang Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig.

          Many fashion experts would say that the peak of the Supermodel Era happened between 1991 and 1997. Majority considered Kate Moss as the “last true supermodel” of this era.
          Moss is one of the most controversial supermodels. In a sense, she is not the typical supermodel that fashion critics expect to see. She’s extremely thin, not that tall, with gapped front teeth, and looks like a cross between a child and a grown woman.           The film Die Hard (1988), which starred Bruce Willis and brought him to the peak of stardom, as of this writing, had four sequels: Die Hard 2 (1990), Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995), Live Free or Die Hard (2007) at A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).
          Do you know that the story about the New York police detective John McClane that Willis portrayed in the original Die Hard was derived from a novel? The title of novel is Nothing Lasts Forever (1979), authored by crime novelist Roderick Thorp (1936-1999). The name of the lead character, John Leland, however, was changed to John McClane. The character was also made younger, and instead of saving his son against the villains, the character was scriptwritten to rescue his wife.

1900 – The Liceo de Manila, the first institute of higher learning in Manila with a completely Filipino faculty, opened.

1944 – The United States Congress passed Joint Resolution No. 83 and 93. The former gave the U.S. the right to retain military (naval and air) bases in the Philippines while the latter authorized the U.S. president to proclaimed the independence of the Philippines on July 4, 1945.

2011 – The Philippine National Railways reopened the “Bicol Express” rail service from the Tutuban station to naga City.

1903 – The first population census was held. The results, including the total Philippine population at that time (7,635,426), were published on 1905.

1940 – The first literary protest in the Philippines was held at Plaza Moriones in Manila. Members of the Kapisanang Panitikan (literary organization) burned symbolic copies of books written by their elders amid fiery speeches condemning the state of national literature.

1945 – Corregidor was liberated by American forces from the Japanese.

          Ang “Double Cross” ay isang nobelang pang-komiks na isinulat at iginuhit ni Francisco V. Coching sa Espesyal komiks (1959-1960). Isinapelikula ito ng Sampaguita Pictures sa ilalim ng direksyon ni Conrado Conde. Itinampok dito si Luis Gonzales sa pangunahing papel.

Larawang Tribiya

          Ang Yank ay isang panglingguhan babasahing magazine na inilabas ng United States military noong World War II. Ito ay mula sa konsepto ni Egbert White na dati ng nagtrabaho sa Stars and Stripes noong World War I. Siya ay binigyan ng U.S. Army ng ranggong Lieutenant Colonel upang pamunuan ang publication. Naging unang editor nito si Major Hertzell Spence. Naglalaman ito ng mga kuwentong isinulat ng mga enlisted rank soldiers, larawan ng pin-up girls (mga sikat na artista sa dulaan at pelikula), ang “G.I. Joe” cartoons ni Dave Breger at ang “Sad Sack “cartoons ni Sgt. George baker. Umabot ang circulation nito ng 2.6 million.

          Sa Pilipinas, ibinebenta ito sa halagang 10 centavos (1943-1945). Sa isang cover ng Far East Edition ng Yank (Vol. 2 No. 31, March 2, 1945), itinampok ang larawang may pamagat na “Philippine Procession” kung saan makikita ang isang kalesa na sinusundan ng isang tangkeng pandigma ng America.
