1900 – The Liceo de Manila, the first institute of higher learning in Manila with a completely Filipino faculty, opened.

1944 – The United States Congress passed Joint Resolution No. 83 and 93. The former gave the U.S. the right to retain military (naval and air) bases in the Philippines while the latter authorized the U.S. president to proclaimed the independence of the Philippines on July 4, 1945.

2011 – The Philippine National Railways reopened the “Bicol Express” rail service from the Tutuban station to naga City.

Samantha Fox first appeared as a topless model on “Page Three” of the U. K. newspaper The Sun in 1983 when she was just 16 years old. Her destiny changed in 1986 when, as a pop singer, she launched her debut single “Touch Me (I Want Your Body).” It became the Number 1 hit in 17 countries including Australia, Canada and South Africa, and made it to Number 3 in U.K. and Number 4 in the United States.

1889 – La Correspondencia de Manila, possibly the first newspaper sold in the streets of Manila, was established by Jose Guillermo Autran (the son). It was similar to the La Correspondencia de Madrid, published by Jose Guillermo Autran (the father).

1860 – Gregorio Aglipay, nationalist priest and founder of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (popularly known as the Aglipayan Church) – Batac, Ilocos Norte (d. September 1, 1940).

1869 – Fabian de la Rosa, foremost painter during the American Occupation and winner in the 1904 St. Louis Exposition with his painting “Planting Rice” – in Paco, Manila (d. December 14, 1937).

Events that happened on February 6

1899 – The U.S. Senate formally ratified the Treaty of Paris between the U.S. and Spain. This gave the U.S. military a free hand in the subjugation of the Philippines.

1905 – The title of “Civil Governor” for the American administrator of the Philippines was replaced with “Governor-General” by the U.S. Congress. Luke Edward Wright was the first American governor-general of the Philippines.

1957 – Claro M. Recto made his historic speech against American colonialism.

1964 – Camp Murphy was renamed Camp Emilio Aguinaldo.

2012 – A Magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Negros and Cebu islands devastating several towns causing landslide, the collapse of bridges and buildings. Its epicenter was on the town of Tayasan. It also revealed a new fault line running about 30 to 50 kilometers underwater between the two islands.

          Eva Gabor (1919-1995) was the first among the three Gabor sisters (Zsa Zsa and Magda are the other two) to come to the United States. She went with her husband, Eric Valdemar Drimmer, a Swedish osteopath, in 1939, after their marriage in London.
          Do you know the first American film she appeared in? This was in Forced Landing (1941), starring Richard Arlen (1899-1976), where Eva Gabor played the role of Johanna van Deuren.
