JOSE RIZAL ON THE COVERS

JOSE RIZAL ON THE COVERS

I am among those who believe that heroes should be remembered on their birth date, not on the day they died. Aside, of course, from book covers, Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, have been featured in several komiks and magazine covers. Here are a few of them.

On his 92nd birth anniversary, Tagalog Klasiks featured an illustration of Jose Rizal with a caption: “Isinilang ang isang Rizal upang makintal sa isip ng kabataan na ang liping kayumanggi’y lahi ng kagitingan....” (A Rizal was born to instill in the minds of the youth that the brown race is lineage of heroism....).
Tagalog Klasiks, June 27, 1953

On the year of the centennial of Philippine Independence, Rizal was featured on the cover of a magazine appropriately titled 1898.
1898, October 1998

On its Rizal Day issue, Philippine Panorama gave tribute to the National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Philippine Panorama, December 26, 1999

Exactly on Rizal’s 150-year birth anniversary, the Sunday Inquirer Magazine featured on its cover a quite different illustration of the Philippine National Hero title “Rizal Reimagined” by John Paul Cuison.

Math-O'Logics: The Story of Pi

MOD Filipina Vol. 23 No. 1044, September 6, 1991
On the cover: Maria Cristina “Maitina” P. Franco

I wrote a mathematical article, “The Story of Pi,” for MOD, but it was cut into a series of Math-O’Logic issues starting with this.

Also in this MOD Filipina September 6, 1991 issue is a historical article, “Rizal Almost Burned the Fili Manuscripts” and an issue of my trivia column For the Record.

Love and Romance According to Jose Rizal

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 20 No. 8, June 25, 1996
On the cover: A rare occasion where Regine Velasquez and Kuh Ledesma
are together in a cover page.
Note: A typographical error on the date makes this magazine “valuable” for collectors.

Although published six days after the 35th anniversary of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal’s day of birth, it is always very interesting to recall his love and romances.

“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these GOD will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh, for childhood and youth are vanity.” – The Book of Ecclesiastes 11:9-10.

The Two Endearing Loves of Dr. Jose Rizal

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 21 Nos. 9 & 10 (June 24 and July 1, 1997)
On the covers: Rosanna Roces (left), and James Coronel and Geneva Cruz (right)

I have written several articles on the perennial problem of the Philippines – floods. This one, “Here Come the Floods” (published in two parts), I wrote 20 years ago. Imagine, up to now, the problem still has no solution on sight.
The adjoining article, pertinent to the occurrence of floods, is about a health problem that continually afflicts the Filipinos – “Leptospirosis.”

“The LORD watches a man’s ways, marking every course he takes. He who is wicked is caught in his own iniquities, held fast in the toils of his own sin; for want of discipline he will perish, wrapped in the shroud of his boundless folly.” – Proverbs 5:21-23, The Revised English Bible.

Celebrity World Vol. 5 No. 254, June 24, 1996
On the cover: Hans Montenegro and Pinky Amador
The romantic side of Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was featured in my article “The Two Endearing Love of Dr. Jose Rizal” (p. 8) for Celebrity World June 24, 1996 issue. For all of his romantic encounters, read “Love and Romance According to Jose Rizal” published in Mr. & Ms. June 25, 1996 issue (SEE succeeding post).

“Set me as a seal upon your heart,
As a seal upon your arm;
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy as cruel as the grave;
Its flames are flames of fire,
A most vehement flame.”

Fernando Poe Jr, “Da King,” on the cover of
People Asia June 2004 issue
Larawang Tribiya
