This article, “There’s more to Kalabasa Than Meets the Eye,” is filled with trivia and information about, what else, the kalabasa!

“The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is GOD who matters, because he makes the plant grow.” – Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 3:7, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

  1. Sir Ernee, do you have any possible ideas on why Mod Magazine folded up in 2013?

  2. There are many reasons, but in my opinion, mismanagement and the lack of marketing strategy in the Internet Era are foremost among them.

    1. I think that was also the same reason/s why Mr. & Ms. (another magazine in which you've contributed articles to) folded up in 2008.

    2. More likely. Kasi ng mawala yung editor, si Jay Cunanan-Canlas, naging hawsiyaw na mga contents. Pulos nonsense and supernatural na ang tema ng mga articles. They alienated themselves to the reading public. Masyado pang politically yellow ang management.

    3. As far as I know, before Mr. & Ms.' demise, it was titled "Mr. & Ms. Trendspotting: Business, Lifestyle, & Travel."

  3. I read somewhere from KC Cordero's blog (comicspotting.blogspot.com) that an interested businessman was supposed to acquire Atlas from National Book Store, but the talks with Atlas' general manager (Mr. Deo Alvarez) reportedly bogged down, hence Atlas' closure.

  4. If there are talks about acquiring Atlas Publishing, it would be with the owner, Mr. Benjamin Ramos, not with Mr. Alvarez. Some of titles published by Atlas had already been sold. Mr. Alvarez did said that there were interested parties who wants to buy Atlas, but the reported amount was quite low.

  5. Oh well. If only Mod converted themselves to a monthly magazine earlier (before its later competitors arrived (eg. Good Housekeeping, Preview, Cosmopolitan, etc.), then perhaps they would eventually set a greater trend in the industry.

Either way, Mod's 39-year existence in the market is worth remembering, given that it has set the trends on Filipinas, and made diversity on its topics. Mod is more than just a women's magazine: It's also a family magazine!

  6. You said it right. I saw a mistake in the financing of the operation of the publishing company by its new owner, but that is left to my own opinion.
Another is that the new owner sacrifced a chance to have a top-selling magazine just because a nun complained about it. If you know the story about "Playhouse?" It could have gave FHM & Maxim rough competition & could even edge them out from the top.
