FIRST ISSUES

 

          It’s the first of July, my birth month. I’m itching to post something! I thought, it should be something connected to me. Ah yes! The first of my birth month, so I’m posting the covers of the First Issues of my magazine collections.

          I have already previously posted some of them in this same blog together with my collections of Philippine komiks first issues on the particular day they were released.

          Among those published in the Philippines are the following:

MOVIE FAN

          Actress Barbara Perez on the first cover, this magazine contains news, stories and articles about movie stars in particular and the film industry in general (SEE more information about it on April 14, 2012 post).

POGI (Filipino colloquial word for “handsome”)

          I don’t know the name of the lady in the jungle-motif bikini, nor the lion. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it if you post it here. It contains sexy pictures, essays, stories and komiks about sex and sexuality, but not vulgar (SEE more information about it on April 3, 2012 post).

BARAKO (Slang for “stud” like its subtitle, which translates to “genuine men’s magazine”)

          Who’s the woman in the cover? I don’t know. I’ve sold this one already. Contains erotica, articles about and komiks depicting sex.

TOPSTAR PIP (That’s Tirso Cruz III movie nickname during the 1970s)

          Tirso Cruz III, Edgar Mortiz and Vilma Santos on the cover of this movie and entertainment magazine (This was actually my former yaya’s magazine). Contains stories and gossips about, inside and around celebrities, films and the film industry.

Focus Philippines

          This magazine went into circulation just a few months after the declaration of martial law, with its cover (raised hand with a broken chain) and featured article (“Emancipation 1972” by Blas F. Ople) reminiscent and symbolic of freedom (from foreign dictates). On the background is the Declaration of Martial Law in President Ferdinand Marcos’ own handwriting (SEE more information about it on November 18, 2012 post).

ATOMEDIA PHILIPINES

          On the cover of this first magazine in the Philippines about atomic energy is a very simplified representation of an atomic burst. This came into being to streamline the nuclear energy program of the Marcos government, educated the public, and serve as forum for articles and discussion regarding nuclear energy. It became the publication of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Aglow (as in radiance of color, spirit and emotion)

          Ten-year-old Bernadette E. Salas on the cover of this magazine, in my book, one of the best first issue covers I’ve seen. Contains trivia, essays and articles about Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular vulgar (SEE more information about it on September 23, 2012 post).

PHILIPPINE GRAPHIC (Indeed!)

          On the premier cover is one unique “graphic” illustration titled Independence: An Endangered Species: A woman seemingly crucified (more like afloat with her hands tied); looking upward with her visually decapitated head attached to her neck; her left breast exposed apparent to breastfeeding a child also floating infront of her. A dovelike silhouette can also be seen emanating from the child’s head. Notice that at the back of the woman is the Philippine flag with its red portion on the left side signifying that the country is in the state of war. Picture Trivia

          In the film Iron Man 2 (2010), Scarlett Johansson needed to color her hair red to portray the role of Black Widow. Mickey Rourke, on the other hand, needed to go to Russia to make actual research about Russian tattoos to make the marks on the body of the villain he is portraying, Ivan Vanko, realistic.
          In the part of the film, when Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr) asked Natalia Rushman (a.k.a. Black Widow) if she can really speak Latin, the latter replied “Fallaces sunt rerum species,” most possibly borrowed from De Beneficiis (On Benefits) by Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 5 B.C. – A.D. 65, Roman philosopher, statesman at dramatist), meaning “Appearances can be deceiving.”

          Lucy Lawless (birth name Lucille Frances Ryan) is a New Zealand actress best known for his role as Xena, the warrior princess. Prior to this, she first appeared on the pilot episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, “Hercules and the Amazon Woman” (1994), as the man-hating Amazon name Lysia. She also played another character, Lyla, on the first season episode “As Darkness Falls.” Lawless got her best known role when she was asked to play a warrior woman named Xena in the episode “Warrior Princess” (March 1995), after Vanessa Angel, the actress originally cast for the role, fell ill and was unable to travel to New Zealand for the shooting. Lawless subsequently returned as Xena in two more episodes of the first season where her character turned from villainess to heroine. The character became so popular that a spin-off series was created – Xena: The Warrior Princess (1995-2001).
          Do you know than Lucy Lawless has a cameo in the 2002 Tobey Maguire starrer Spider-Man? She was a punk rock girl.

          Tyrone Power (1914-1958) and Maureen O’hara lead the cast of the 1942 film The Black Swan, which is based on the novel of the same title by Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950). After finishing the film, Power need to sign up for the U.S. Marines to train for military service. He was recall, however, upon the request of 20th Century Fox to finish another film, Crash Dive (1943), which serve to promote the recruitment in the military service.

UNANG LABAS

Ang Pogi Magazine for Men ay unang lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Abril 3, 1969. Bagama’t ito ay naglalaman ng mga sexy pictures, mga sanaysay at kuwentong komiks tungkol sa sex at sexuality, hindi bulgar o malaswa ang pagsasalarawan at ilustrasyon nito katulad ng mga tinaguriang “bomba” o x-rated komiks at magazines. Ito ay pinatnugutan nina Ted Tenorio (Editor) at Mars Ravelo (Editorial Director) na manapa’y ang layunin ay labanan ang paglaganap ng mga malalaswang babasahin na inilalathala ng mga “underground” publications.
Tampok sa magazine na ito ang mga kuwentong komiks na “Sa Bawat Saglit... Sindak” (sinulat ni Mars Ravelo at iginuhit ni Mar T. Santana), “Uhaw” (Deo Villegas at Elmer Esquivias), “Big Bernard” (Ric Torres at Arnie Dominguez), mga comedy strips na “Dumb Dora” (Deo C. Gonzales at Vir Aguirre), “Dr. Ispongklong” (Ted Tenorio at Bert Sarile) at “Ngisi” (Al Magat), at mga wakasang kuwentong “Hayok” (Virgilio N. Mateo at Vic R. Ang Dr. Ispongklong ni Ted Tenorio at Bert Sarile

          Ang komiks comedy series na “Dr. Ispongklong,” na nilikha ni Ted Tenorio at iginuhit ni Bert Sarile at unang lumabas sa Pogi Komiks noong Abril 3, 1969, ay puno ng nakakatawang kuwento ng mga kalokohan ng pangunahing karakter na si Dr. Ispongklong at ng mga tao sa kaniyang paligid. May temang seksuwal ang kuwento na angkop sa Pogi Komiks. Si Dr. Ispongklong, ay isang manggagamot (kuno) na laging naka-pipa na may dalawang sigarilyo, may nakakabit na light reflector sa kaniyang noo, at laging may hawak na stethoscope. May pagkahilig din sa mga seksing babae ang doctor na ito.

Ang unang labas ng Dr. Ispongklong.

          Alam niyo ba kung ano ang ibig sabihin ng salitang “ispongklong?” Batay sa aking pagsasaliksik, ito ay isang salitang naimbento sa loob ng editorial office ng Pilipino Komiks Inc. Bukod sa paglikha kay Dr. Ispongklong, si Ted Tenorio ay nahirang ding isa sa mga editors ng Pogi Komiks. Sa simula, ang naisip niyang ipangalan sa kaniyang karakter ay “Dr. Mahilig,” subalit hindi niya ito itinuloy. Nais niyang ang pangalan ay maging kawiliwili at naiiba. Humingi siya ng tulong sa kapwa editor na si Mars Ravelo. Nakatakda ng iimprenta ang comedy skit niya sa loob ng unang isyu ng Pogi Magazine for Men subali’t wala pa silang maisip na pangalan. Kaya ang ginawa ni Mars Ravelo ay kumuha ng coupon bond at inilagay sa typewriter, ipinikit niya ang kaniyang mga mata at nagtipa. Ang mga letrang tumatak sa coupon bond at I-s-p-t-o-n-g-k-r-l-o-n-g. Pinagmasdan nilang mabuti at natawa. Nasabi ni Tenorio kay Ravelo na “wala na silang maisip na matino.” Pero napansin ni Ravelo na kung aalisin ang letrang “t” at “r,” ang lalabas ay “Ispongklong.” Pinagtiyap naman na ang “t” ay para sa Tenorio at ang “r” ay para sa Ravelo. Nagkamay ang dalawa at lumabas na ang “Dr. Ispongklong.”

          Kaya ang ibig sabihin ng “ispongklong” ay “taong walang maisip na matino” na siyang karakter ni Dr. Ispongklong.

Ang Dumb Dora ni Deo C. Gonzales at Vir Aguirre

          Ayon mismo sa pagkakalarawan ni Deo C. Gonzales, si “Dumb Dora” ay isang babaeng may pinagsama-samang katangian nina Cleopatra, Mata Hari at Marilyn Monroe, na dinagdagan ng saksakang katangahan. Siya ay “sidekick” at “girl-Friday” ni Singko Nire, Agent 7-11, isa namang sikret edyent na saksakan ng lakas ang hangin sa utak, subali’t pinakyaw na yata lahat ng uri ng kabugukan. Ang nakatutuwang comedy series na ito ay kasabay ring lumabas ng unang isyu ng Pogi.

          The average weight of the human brain is 1.4 kilogram, but its functions and capacity can far exceed any computer ever built. Up to now, no scientist can claim that he knows exactly everything about the human brain. It is the only human organ that cannot be transplanted or replaced.
          Many have tried to measure the capacity of the human brain. Oftentimes, it is compared to a computer. According to Hans Moravec, who is renowned for his research in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence, the human brain can process 100 trillion instructions per second. Moravec based this in the brain’s capacity to process image inputs from the retina of the eyes. By his estimate, based on technological standard and advancement today, the computer maybe able to exceed the human brain’s capacity by the year 2030.
          If it were possible to build a computer today identical to the human brain, with all its functions and capacity, it is estimated that the computer will be bigger than the land area of Metro Manila!

1576 – Spanish explorer Juan de Salcedo, known as the “Henando Cortez of the Philippines,” died in Vigan.

1876 – England and Germany signed a protocol recognizing Spanish right to Tawi-Tawi Islands and the chain of islands from Sulu to Borneo.

1947 – The parity Amendment to the 1935 Constitution was approved in a plebiscite. This amendment gave parity or equal rights to Filipinos and Americans in the exploitation of natural resources in the Philippines. With the approval of the amendment, the Bell Trade Act became effective and the Military Bases Agreement was also approved.

          The attempted assassination of US Pres. Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) by John Warnock Hinckley on March 30, 1981, was said to be a case of erotomania, where Hinckley believe that Reagan’s death will make Hollywood actress Jodie Foster publicly declare her love for him. Hinckley’s erotomanic delusion was brought about by his repeated watching of the film Taxi Driver (1976) in which the character Travis Bickle (played by Robert de Niro) planned to assassinate the US president. Foster was in this film portraying a child prostitute.
          Foster won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1989, for her portrayal of a rape survivor in the film The Accused. In 1991, she played the role of Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee who helped captured the serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs. This gave her international acclaim and the second Academy Award for Best Actress.
          Aside from this, Foster is known as a multi-lingual actress. She is fluent in French and does her own translation into French of the Hollywood films she made. She also speaks German and Italian.
          In 1992, Foster played the role of an unnamed prostitute with Lily Tomlin, Kathy Bates and Anne Lange in the film Shadows and Fog. In that same year she established the production company, Egg Pictures, in Los Angeles, which produced independent films until 2001.
