“The Test Tube Baby,”

six days after Louis Joy Brown was
delivered through Caesarean operation
at the Oldham General Hospital.
Picture Trivia
Louise Joy Brown is known as the world's “first test tube baby.” In reality, however, the baby was not “created” in a test tube as one might think. The method of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), or the fertilization of a woman’s ovum by a spermatozoa, is done in a fluid medium in a petri dish. The fertilized ovum or zygote is returned to the woman’s uterus, the objective of which is to have a successful pregnancy and birth. The IVF was conceptualized by Dr. Patrick Steptoe (1913-1988) and Dr. Robert Edwards (1925-2013). Lesley Brown undertook this procedure on November 10, 1977. After 256 days, on July 25, 1978, a baby girl was born through Caesarean operation and was named Louise Joy Brown.
