Sex Education and Teenage Pregnancy

          Sex Education is abroad term that pertains to the study of human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, reproductive health, emotional relationship, abstinence and contraception, reproductive rights and responsibilities, and other aspects of human sexuality and sexual behavior. According to global statistics, countries which do not have a genuine and comprehensive Sex Education have more cases and incidences of rape, sexually-transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy and abortion.

          Do you know that in the United States, a 13-year-old girl needs the signed letter of approval from her parents before she can participate in a field trip? She also needs the same if she wants to have her ears pierced. What is alarming, however, according to Plain Truth, is that a 13-year-old girl can and is free to have sex whenever she wants to, and if she gets pregnant from this act of precociousness and promiscuity, she can have an abortion without her parents even knowing about it. This is what critics in the U.S. called “foolishness of American society.”

            Italian actress Sophia Loren was only 15 years old when she met Italian film producer Carlo Ponti, who was then 37 years old. After eight years they got married on September 17, 1957, even though Ponti was still married to his first wife Giuliana Fiastri. During those times, there was no divorce in Italy. Ponti and Loren need to dissolve their marriage or face a bigamy case. In 1965, Ponti was able to get a divorce from Fiastri in France, and on April 9, 1966, Ponti remarried Loren and they became French citizens.
          It can be said that the love story between Ponti and Loren is one among the most extraordinary. They both relinquished their citizenships and were unmindful of their age difference in the name of love. They loved and lived in blessings and hardship for more than 57 years until Ponti’s death in 2007.
          When Loren was asked if she would ever remarry, she replied: “No, never again. It would be impossible to love anyone else.”

          Sa kasaysayan ng komiks sa Pilipinas, sino ang hindi makakakilala kay Valentina? Siya ang babaeng-ahas, ang unang kakaibang nilalang na nakalaban ni Darna (na nagsimula sa Pilipino Komiks Blg. 77, Mayo 13, 1950). Batay sa likhang nobela ni Mars Ravelo, si Valentina ay anak nina Miguel at Doray. Isa siyang nilalang na ang mga buhok sa ulo ay mga makamandag na ahas, katulad ng mythical gorgon na si Medusa. Naging masamang gabay niya si Kobra, isang nilalang na may ulo ng huklubang babae at katawan ng isang malaking sawa. Nauutusan ni Valentina ang lahat ng uri ng mga ahas, kaya tinatawag siya ni Kobra na “diyosa ng mga ahas.”

          Sa orihinal na komiks, siya ay kinatakutan at kinamuhian ng mga tao at ng tanging lalaking kaniyang minahal, si Edwardo. Ito ang nagbunsod sa kaniya sa kasamaan. Nagawa niya ring paslanging ang kaniyang mga magulang, at tinangka niyang lipulin ang mga tao at gawin ang buong daigdig na pugad ng mga ahas. Pinigilan siya ni Darna. Sa huli, isang malakas na lindol ang lumipol sa kaniyang mga kampon, at nang masukol siya ni Darna, siya ay nagpatiwakal, nagpatihulog sa bangin kung saan niya itinapon ang mga bangkay ng kaniyang mga magulang.

          Actor-director Laurence Olivier and Hollywood sex goddess Marilyn Monroe made a film together – The Prince and the Showgirl (1957). Olivier admired and praised Monroe saying: “a brilliant comedienne, which to me means she is also an extremely skilled actress.” He, however, criticized Monroe’s drama coach, Paula Strasberg, for being worthless and a fake. Monroe’s portrayal of the showgirl name Elsie Marina was lauded especially in Europe, where she won the David Donatello, the Italian equivalent of the American Academy Award, and also the French Crystal Star Award.

Ang Philippine Graphic ay isang lingguhang magazine na unang lumabas noong June 18, 1990. Ito ay pinatnugutan ng 1976 National Artist for Literature na si Nick Joaquin (1917-2004), na siya ring sumulat ng isa sa mga pangunahing artikulo ng magazine na “Marcosian Flashbacks.” Mababasa dito ang mga tudling (column) ng mga batikang manunulat na sina Adrian Cristobal, Luis Beltran at Julie Yap-Daza. Tampok din sa unang labas ng Philippine Graphic ang mga personalidad na sina Nora Aunor, Lea Salonga, Kris Aquino at ang boksingerong si Luisito Espinosa.

Kakaiba naman ang unang taklob-pahina (cover page) ng magazine na ito: Isang nakabiting babae na nakatali ang magkabilang kamay; nakatingala ang ulo na manapa’y pugot na idinugtong sa ginilitang leeg; litaw ang kaliwang suso; at may sanggol na tila nakalutang sa ibabaw ng kaniyang kandungan, na sa ulo nito ay umiibis ang hilagyo ng anyong-kalapati. 1908 – The University of the Philippines was established by virtue of Act No. 1870 of the First Philippine Legislative known as the “University Act.”

1923 – Pancho Villa (Francisco Guilledo, 1901-1925) became the first ever Filipino boxer to win a world title when he knocked out Jimmy Wilde on the seventh round at Polo Grounds in New York.

1938 – Bacolod (capital of Negros occidental) was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 326.

1948 – Naga (formerly Nueva caceres) in Camirines Sur and Legaspi in Albay were declared cities by virture of Republic Act No. 305 and 306 respectively.

1960 – San Carlos in Negros Occidental was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 2643, and Gingoog in Misamis oriental and Toledo in Cebu were declared cities by virtue of Republic Act No. 2688.

1961 – Canlaon in Negros Oriental was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act. No. 3445.

1966 – Tagbilaran in Bohol was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No.4660. Camiguin became a province by virtue of Republic Act No. 4669. Mountain Province was divided into four – Benguet, Bontoc, Ifugao and Kalinga-Apayao – by virtue of Republic Act No. 4695. South Cotobato became a province by virtue of Republic Act No. 4849.

          Noong 1950, si Chou Enlai (1898-1976) ay naging overall commander ng sandatahang-lakas ng People’s Republic of China. Ito ang panahon kung saan nagkaroon ng tensyon at labanan sa 38th parallel sa boundary ng North Korea at South Korea. Maaalalang humingi pa nga ng pahintulot si General Douglas MacArthur kay President Harry Truman na bombahin ang China, na hindi naman sinang-ayunan ng pangulo ng America. Nagkaroon ng stalemate ang magkabilang panig, ang China at North Korea sa isang banda at United States at South Korea sa kabilang banda, noong Hunyo 1951. Makalipas ang dalawang taon, nagkaroon ceasefire agreement noong July 27, 1953 na nilagdaan sa Panmunjom, sa Geonggi-do province ng South Korea sa border nito sa North Korea. Dito pormal na nahati ang North Korea at South Korea sa 38th parallel na mayroong apat na kilometrong demilitarized zone.

          Si Chou Enlai ay naging Premier ng People’s Republic of China mula October 1, 1949 hanggang sa kaniyang pagpanaw noong January 8, 1976.
