Ang Buwan ng March

          Alam nating ang buwan ng March o Marso sa Wikang Kastila at Pilipino ang pangatlong buwan ng taon sa Gregorian Calendar. Subali’t alam niyo ba na hindi ito ang kalakaran noong sinaunang panahon? Sa sinaunang Roman Calendar, tinatawag itong Martius bilang parangal sa diyos ng digmaan ng mga Romano na si Mars (Ares sa mga Griyego). Noon, ang buwan ng Martius ang unang buwan ng taon at iniaalay ito kay Romulus, ang legendary founder ng Roma.

          Ang Bagong Taon noong panahon ng mga Romano ay ipinagdiriwang sa araw ng Marso 25. Ito ay matapos ang Vernal Equinox kung saan magsisimula ng humaba ang araw kaysa gabi.

          Sa kasalukuyan, ang buwan ng Marso ay karaniwang simula ng tag-araw. Sa buwang ito karaniwang tumataas ang temperature ng kapaligiran. Sa Pilipinas, ito rin ang karaniwang buwan ng pagtatapos ng mga klase sa paaralan at ang simula ng summer vacation.

The Boys’ Life, the “Boys’ and Boy Scouts’ Magazine”
Volume 1 Number 1, dated March 1, 1911.

FIRST ISSUE

The Boy’s Life is a twice-a-month magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. It was founded by George S. Barton of Sommerville, Massachasetts. The supposedly first issue came off the press on January 1, 1911, but the magazine’s recognized “first edition” was dated March 1, 1911, where the cover is John Carisford’s “The Lost Express.”

1782 – The “Tobacco Monopoly” was formally organized by Governor-General Jose Basco y Vargas.

1859 – The first issue of La Ilustracion Filipina, a forthnightly publication that first to feature pictures and illustrations, was released.

1884 – The first issue of La Semana Elegante, the first weekly newspaper in the Philippines, was established by Don Pedro Groizard.

1888 – Petition made and signed by 810 natives and mestizos demanding the immediately expulsion of friars of different religious orders and the archbishop, and the confiscation of the friar estates.

1950 – Radio station DZBB of the Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., aired its first newscast from the second floor of the Calvo Building in Escolta, Manila. It was driven by the vision of former American war correspondent Robert Stewart, better known as “Uncle Bob.”

1870 – Macario de Leon Sakay, general and miltary leader in the Philippine revolution against Spain and in the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) – In Tondo, Manila. (d. January 9, 1907)

1931 – Ang Kiukok, Filipino-Chinese painter and National Artist for Visual Arts (2001), in Davao City (d. May 9, 2005).

1954 – Tina Revilla (full name Maria Cristina Revilla), actress – in Manila.

Picture Trivia

          Val Kilmer started out as a stage actor. His rise to fame began after his roles in the comedy films Top Secret (1984) and Real Genius (1985). In 1990, Kilmer auditioned for the role of singer-songwriter and band leader Jim Morrison (1943-1971) in the Oliver Stone directorial The Doors, which is about music band with the same name. Kilmer memorized all of Jim Morrison’s song and even made a video singing them. It did not impress Stone, but the former producer of The Doors, Paul Rothchild, was amazed, and the role was given to Kilmer.
          Kilmer’s portrayal of Morrison and his rendition of The Door’s songs were praised by the members of the band. On the other hand, Stone was criticized for the film depiction of Morrison and The Doors, among them, by the band keyboardist, Ray Manzarek.

1824 – The first issue of the Registro Mercantil de Manila, a publication of the Real Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais, aimed at disseminating information about Philippine economy, was released.

1872 – The Cavite Mutiny led by sargeant Lamadrid.

1977 – First major ceasefire agreement between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) took effect. The negotiation panel was composed of Gen. Romulo Espaldon for the AFP, Hashim Salamat, MNLF leader operating in Lanao and Tawi-Tawi, and Dimas Pundato, MNLF leader operating in Basilan.

2001 – President Joseph “Erap” Estrada was forced out of office and vice-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took her oath as the 14th president of the Philippines.

          In the 1967 Long Beach International Karate Championships, Bruce Lee (Chinese names Lee Jun-fan and Lee Xiao-long) performed various martial arts demonstrations, including the famous “unstoppable punch” against USKA world Karate champion Vic Moore. In the demonstration, Lee told Moore that he was going to throw a straight punch to the face, and all Moore had to do was to try to block it. Lee took several steps back and asked if Moore was ready. When Moore nodded in affirmation, Lee glided towards him until he was within striking range. He then threw a straight punch directly at Moore’s face, and stopped before impact. In eight attempts, Moore failed to block any of the punches.

          In 1999, Bruce Lee was the first martial artist to be introduced to the “Martial Arts Hall of Fame.” Lee was named among Time magazine’s “100 Most Important People of the (20th) Century” – one of the greatest heroes and icons – as an example of personal improvement through, in part, physical fitness, and among the most influential martial artists of the twentieth century. To this day, Lee is considered as the “Greatest Martial Artist of all.”
