of the “Sex Symbol” of the 1950s and 1960s, who gained international fame after
starring in the controversial film And
God Created Woman (1957). Bardot was the subject of the 1959 essay, The Lolita Syndrome, by Simone de
Beauvoir, which described her as the “locomotive of women’s history” and in
existentialist themes declared her the “first and most liberated woman of
post-war France.”
