UNANG LABAS

Unang labas ng Pilipino Komiks, Hunyo 14, 1947.

Ang Pilipino Komiks, na unang lumabas noong Hunyo 14, 1947, ang pangalawang babasahing tinawag na “komiks” at regular na naglalaman ng mga iginuhit na kuwento na lumabas sa sirkulasyon (Ang una ay ang Halakhak Komiks, Nobyembre 15, 1946).

Ang Pilipino Komiks ay ang unang komiks na inilimbag ng Ace Publication na itinatag ni Don Ramon Roces. Si Tony Velasquez ang nagbigay ng tugmang pangalan nito at naging unang patnugot. Sa unang labas, naglimbag ang Ace ng 10,000 kopya, na sa halagang 25 sentimos, ay kaagad naubos sa pamilihan.

Kasama sa unang labas ng Pilipino Komiks ay ang pinakamahabang sinubaybayang nobela sa komiks sa Pilipinas na DI-13 na inakda ng kapatid ni Tony Velasquez na si Damy at iginuhit ni Jesse Santos. Kasama rin ang Prinsesa Urduja ni Vicente Manansala, ang Makisig ni Amadeo Manalad, ang Lagim ni Cris Caguintuan, ang Daluyong ni Fred Carillo, ang Kalabog en Bosyo ni Larry Alcala, ang Lucas Malakas ni Jose Zabala Santos, at Ang Buhay ni Aldabes ni Hugo C. Yonzon Jr. Dito rin nagsimula ang dalawang-pahinang cartoon strip na Nanong Pandak ni Tony Velasquez. Sa komiks na ito rin lumabas ang kauna-unahang advertisement ng Pepsi Cola.

Naging lubhang matagumpay ang Pilipino Komiks, at mula rito nasundan pa ito ng mga ibang babasahin: Tagalog Klasiks (Hulyo 16, 1949), Hiwaga Komiks (Oktubre 11, 1950), Espesyal Komiks (Oktubre 20, 1952), at humigit-kumulang 20 iba pa. Dahil dito naging pinakamalaking publishing company ng babasahing pangmasa ang ACE sa Pilipinas nang panahong yaon. Mula sa panahon ng pamamayagpag ng mga unang komiks hanggang sa mailipat na ang pagmamay-ari nito sa Atlas Publications, hanggang sa unang bahagi ng 1980s ay itinuturing na “Ginintuang Panahon ng Komiks sa Pilipinas.”

Ang Pilipino Komiks ay ang pinakamatagal sa sirkulasyon na babasahin na umabot ng anim na dekada at nagkaroon ng mahigit 3,200 isyu, bagama’t mula noong 2004 hanggang 2011 ay naging Pilipino Illustrated Stories na ang pamagat nito.

1897 – Spanish troops attacked Aguinaldo’s headquarters on Mount Puray near Montalban, but were defeated and repulsed by the Filipino revolutionaries.

1941 – President Quezon signed the maternity-leave bill granting women in government service 60 days maternity leave with full pay in addition to the usual sick and vacation leaves. On this same day, Josefa Llanes-Escoda was elected President of the National Federation of Women’s Clubs in the Philippines.

1945 – Battle of Besang Pass, in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. Combined Filipino-American forces led by Lt. Colonel Manuel Enriquez was victorious against the Japanese 14th Area Army.

1958 – The Development Bank of the Philippines was established.

1981 – The Film Academy of the Philippines was established to give recognition and appreciation for significant efforts in improving the Filipino motion picture arts and science.

1991 – Biggest eruption of Mount Pinatubo, which is in record the second largest eruption in the 20th century.

Live-in, Igorot Style

          Centuries before the term “live-in” was ever mentioned in “modern” literature, the Igorots of Northern Luzon already practiced what can be described as sort of a trial relationship. The custom is associated with the traditional institution of the ulog. Each igorot village has an ulog. It is a hut with a single door opening. Here the girls of the village gather at night to sleep and to be visited by their suitors. The boy meets the girl he wants and they can sleep together and have sex. But they cannot get married until after the girl gets pregnant.

          To the Igorots, pregnancy is the true test of marital compatibility. Only after the girl gets pregnant can she be engaged to her lover. Then and only then can marriage arrangement be negotiated by their families.

Ang nobelang “Torkwata” na nilikha nina Carlos Gonda at Pablo Gomez at iginuhit ni Nestor Redondo ay unang lumabas sa Hiwaga Komiks Blg. 143 noong Hunyo 13, 1956. Isinapelikula ito ng Sampaguita Pictures sa ilalim ng direksiyon ni Rosa Mia at screenplay ni Chito B. Tapawan. Si Susan Roces ang gumanap bilang ang dalagang Torkwata, samantalang si Marilou Cuadrado ang batang Torkwata. Kasama rin sa pelikula sina Eddie Arenas, Aruray, Tito Gala, Precy Ortega at Zeny Zabala. Unang itinanghal ang pelikulang Torkwata noong Mayo 14, 1957.

Events that happened on June 13:

1899 – American troops ambushed Filipino soldiers in Zapote Bridge, Bacoor, Cavite. It is consisdered one of the bloodiest battle in the Philippine-American War.

1910- The University of the Philippines College of Engineering was established.

          Ang Sumatran rhinoceros (pangalang-agham Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) ang pinakamaliit sa lahat ng nabubuhay na lahi o species ng rhinoceros. Ang pangalang-agham o scientific name nito ay ibinigay ng German scientist at curator ng State Darwin Museum sa Moscow, Russia na si Johann Fischer von Waldheim noong 1814. Ang Dicerorhinus ay mula sa mga salitang Griyego na di (dalawa), cero (sungay) at rhinus (ilong), at ang sumatrensis ay nagpapahiwatig na mula ito sa Sumatra kung saan ito unang nakita. Mayroong tatlong subspecies ang hayop na ito: D. s. sumatrensis, D. s. harrissoni at D. s. lasiotis.

          Noong sinaunang panahon ang Sumatran rhinoceros ay laganap sa mga kagubatan ng South at Southeast Asia mula India, Bhutan, Bangladesh Burma at southern China hanggang sa Malaysia at Indonesia. Ngayon, sanhi ng pangangaso upang makuha ang kanilang mga sungay na pinaniniwalaang isang uri ng gamot at aphrodisiac, lubhang nanganganib na silang maubos (critically endangered) at tinatayang humigit-kumulang 200 na lamang ang nalalabing nabubuhay sa Sumatra, Borneo at Malay Peninsula.

He was recall, however, upon the request of 20th Century Fox to finish another film, Crash Dive (1943), which serve to promote the recruitment in the military service.

          The superhero character Batman (secret identity of Bruce Wayne) was created by Bob Kane in May 1939. Kane was inspired by a drawing of Leonardo da Vinci’s bat-wing machine, which can be attached to a person’s back that will enable him to fly. When Kane saw a re-run of the film The Mark of Zorro (1920), starring Douglas Fairbank. The character Zorro (created by Johnston McCulley) gave him the idea on how to create Batman’s character. The mask of the original Batman, on the other hand, was similar to the costume worn by a stylish killer in the film The Bat Whispers (1931). Batman first appeared on Detective Comics #27 before it had its own comics title.

          Before the popular Batman TV series of the 1960s starring Adam West, the character was first heard on radio, voiced by Stacy Harris, and had a movie, The Batman (1943), starring Lewis Wilson.  Robert Lowery played the character in Batman and Robin (1949). Adam West also played Batman on the big screen in Batman and the Fearsome Foursomes (1966).

          Batman portrayers include Michael Keaton in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), Val Kilmer in Batman Forever (1995), George Clooney in Batman & Robin (1997), and Christian Bale in Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008).

          The term “Black Hole” was coined by American theoretical Physicist John Archibald Wheeler (1911-2008) in 1967 to describe the awesome cosmic phenomenon. The existence of a black hole was first predicted by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) in his “Theory of Gravity (General Relativity) in 1915, although the concept of the supermassive body was first put forward by the English geologist John Michell (1724-1793) in 1784.

          Theoretically, a black hole forms when a very massive star runs out of fuel. Without energy to support its mass, the star implodes. If the star is more than 25 times the mass of our sun, the core will collapse to a point of infinite density with no surface. Within a boundary of about 50 miles from the black hole center, gravity is so strong that not even light can escape its pull. This boundary is theoretically known as the event horizon.

          Until recently, black holes have remained hidden beneath invisibility cloaks. Indeed. Whereas a lot has been known about the existence and properties of black holes from Einstein’s theory of general relativity, tangible evidence has been a recent phenomenon.

          According to astronomers, black holes exist in at least two different sizes. Stellar black holes, formed from the death and gravitational collapse of a massive star, is about ten to 20 times the mass of our sun. Dwarfing the stellar type, supermassive black holes hold millions to billions the mass of our Sun, and lurk at the centers of many galaxies.

          Indirect evidence from X-ray telescopes has revealed telltale signs of thousands of black holes lurking in our own galaxy and beyond. Many are the remnants of exploded stars. But to other far more massive black holes, swallowing a single star is like a blue whale gulping a mosquito.

          It is believed that super-massive black holes are located at the core of every galaxy. According to Suvi Gezari of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, the Milky Way galaxy in which our solar system resides has a dormant super-massive black hole at its center. They can have the mass of a trillion suns squeezed into an area the size of our solar system. Smaller stellar black holes can lurk throughout a galaxy. Middleweight black holes, discovered in 1999, range from 100 to 10,000 suns in mass but are no bigger than our moon.

          Over thousands of years, black holes grow bigger by consuming material whizzing around them. Just before gas and dust get sucked into a black hole, this matter heats up so much that it emits streams of x-rays. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes equipped with x-ray vision spot the distant lights.

          That’s how astronomers pinpointed the first black hole, called Cygnus X-1, in 1971. Since then, thousands of black holes have been spotted, bringing to light answers to many questions. In 2001, observations of Cygnus X-1, roughly 6,000 light-years away, provided the first glimpse of material actually falling into a black hole.

Ang unang tatlong isyu ng Charm Comics (Kaloob ni Terry Bagalso).

Ang Charm Comics ay isang kakaibang komiks na Filipino ang dating, English ang medium at mala-Japanese manga ang pagkakaguhit. Ang initials ng mga pangalan ng limang pangunahing character – limang dalagitang “mangkukulam” – ay bumubuo sa salitang BRUJA. Ito sana ang orihinal na titulong balak ng maykatha, ang Atlas Publishing Book and Komiks editor-in-chief na si Terry Bagalso, subali't hindi ito gusto ng General Manager na si Deo Alvares kaya napalitan ng Charm. Kung iisipin higit sanang malakas ang hatak ng titulong  “Bruja.” Unang itong lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Hunyo 9, 2003. Kakaiba ang storyline ng Charm (hindi ito kopya o hawig sa TV seies na Charmed) na kakakakitaan ng katatawanan, pakikipagsapalaran, pantasya, kababalaghan, at konting sundot ng drama at kabayanihan. Maganda sana ang hinaharap ng komiks na ito kung nabigyan ng tamang marketing, pero itinigil ng Atlas ang paglilimbag dito noong 2004 matapos lamang ang 10 issues.

Alcala ang “Prinsipe Ahmad, Anak ni Aladdin.” Natunghayan ito kasabay ng paglabas sa sirkulasyon ng Silangan Komiks noong Marso 16, 1950, sa ilalim ng patnugot ni Ben Cabaillo Jr.  Subalit hindi natapos ang kuwento sa pagtigil sa paglilimbag ng Silangan Publications ng kanilang komiks dahil sa kakulangan ng pondo at distribution network.

          Sumikat ang American actress na si Melissa Joan Hart sa kaniyang pagganap sa television series bilang Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Subalit alam niyo bang hindi na siya teenager nang gampanan niya ang papel na tumagal ng pitong seasons? Noong 1995 pumasok si Hart sa new York University, subalit hindi niya nagawang tapusin ang kursong kinuha niya nang alukin siyang gumanap sa title role ng 1996 TV movie na Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Halos 20-anyos na siya noon. Sinundan ito ng television series na may parehong pamagat na tumagal hanggang 2003. Noong namang July 19, 2003, nagpakasal siya sa musician na si Mark Wilkerson sa isang televised wedding. Matapos ito, siya rin ang nagbigay ng boses sa dalawang character – Aunt Hilda at Aunt Zelda – sa animation version ng Sabrina, kung saan ang nakababata niyang kapatid na si Emily Hart ang nagbigay boses sa Teenage Witch.
