1822 – The Paco Cemetery originally located in San Marcelino Street in Paco, Manila, was completed under the administration of Don Jose Coll. The cadaver of Dr. Jose Rizal was first buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery before it was transferred to Rizal Park.

1898 – American consul-general E. Spencer Pratt urged General Emilio Aguinaldo to resume the revolution against Spain.

          Ang Earth Day ay isang araw sa bawat taon kung saan ang buong daigdig ay sama-sama at nagkakaisa sa pagpapalaganap ng kamalayan hinggil sa pangangalaga ng Inang Kalikasan.

          Alam niyo ba na ang kauna-unahang ginanap na Earth Day – April 22, 1970 – ay siya ring ika-100 anibersaryo ng kapanganakan ni Vladimir Lenin, ang “Ama ng Communist Russia?” Kaya nga marami ang nagtaas ng kilay at naghinala na mayroong subersibong elemento ang pagdiriwang na ito. Subalit ayon kay United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, napili niya ang araw na ito para ganapin ang “teach-in” o pagtuturo ng kamalayan sa kapaligiran dahil sa buong linggong sumasakop sa araw na ito ay maluwag na makadadalo ang mga mag-aaral upang makinig sa mga talakayan.

          Ang English comic actor, scriptwriter, film director at composer na si Charlie Chapilin (buong pangalan Charles Spencer Chaplin, 1889-1977) ang kinikilalang pinakatanyag na artista nang bago matapos ang World War I. Ang kaniyang pinaka-hindi-malilimutang pagganap ay sa pelikulang The Tramp (1914).

          Una siyang nagwagi ng Academy Award sa unang paggagawad nito. Nominado si Chaplin at ang kaniyang pelikulang The Circus sa Best Production, Best Director in a Comedy Picture, Best Actor at Best Writing (Original Story), at inaasahang magwawagi, subalit sa halip ay inalis ang pangalan niya sa listahan ng mga nominado at pinagkalooban na lamang siya ng isang Special Award para sa “versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing The Circus.” Sa marami pang pagkakataon hindi siya nahirang dahil marahil sa politika at dahil sa mainit ang dugo ng ilang namamahala sa Acedemy Awards sa kaniya. Ayon kay George Bernard Shaw, si Chaplin ay “the only genius to come out of the movie industry” (ang nag-iisang henyong lumitaw sa industriya ng pelikula).

          Alam niyo bang isa rin si Charlie Chaplin sa nagtatag ng United Artist? Noong 1919, kasama sina Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbank at D. W. Griffith, itinatag nila ang naturang film production outfit.

          Noong 1940s, si Chaplin ay pinaghinalaang isang komunista, kaya pinaimbestigahan siya sa FBI at sa British secret service ni J. Edgar Hoover. Humantong pa ito sa paghiling ni Hoover sa Immigration and Naturalization Service na bawiin ang reentry permit sa America ni Chaplin.

          Nagdesisyon si Chaplin na tumira sa Vevey, Switzerland. Noong April 1972, matagumpay siyang bumalik sa America kasama ang kaniyang asawa upang tumanggap ng Honorary Oscar. Matapos ang 43 taon, muling tumanggap ng Academy Award si Chaplin bilang pagkilala sa “incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century.” Sa pagtungtong niya sa entablado ng Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, tumanggap siya ng standing ovation na tumagal ng 12 minuto, ang pinakamatagal na palakpakan sa kasaysayan ng Academy Award.

          British Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn (real name Audrey Kathleen Ruston, 1929-1993) was born in Ixelles, a district in Brussels, Belgium. During her childhood, at the height of World War II, she and her family suffered hardship and transferred from one residence to another in Belgium, England and the Netherlands. Her childhood experiences during the war gave Hepburn the inspiration to dedicate a part of her life to social and humanitarian works for UNICEF.           Hepburn’s star began to shine in Hollywood after her performance in the film Gigi (1951), followed by Roman Holiday (1953), where she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway play Ondine (1954). She is one among a few who have won awards in Oscar, Tony, Emmy at Grammy.
          In 1961, Hepburn was chosen to play the lead role of Holly Golightly, an extraordinary New York City call girl, for the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Truman Capote, who wrote the novel from which the film was based, said the role is not suited for Hepburn but for Marilyn Monroe. Although Hepburn also said “I can’t play a hooker” in passing, she was still chosen for the lead role. The character she portrayed didn’t have much sexual innuendos, but she was nominated for the Academy Best Actress Award, and Holly Golightly became an iconic symbol in American cinema.

1901 – The Proclamation of Surrender of Genral Emilio Aguinaldo, printed in English, Spanish and several Philippine dialects, were distributed throughout the Philippines, through which he proclaimed that independence can be obtained through the magnanimity of the United States.

1987 – New People’s Army contingent composed of around 300 men clashed with the military in Sitio Akle, San Ildefonso, Bulacan. The battle lasted four days. The military estimated at least 40 NPA men were killed while the rebels claimed the military suffered 18 casualties.

          The Marvel Comics cosmic superhero Silver Surfer (a.k.a. Norrin Radd of the Planet Zenn-La) was conceptualized by Jack Kirby and first appeared on Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966). Do you know that the character was unintentionally made? Even at the beginning, writer-editor Stan Lee was hesitant of including a character riding on a surfboard.
          Silver Surfer’s silver screen debut was in the 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Do you know that two actors portrayed the character in the said film? The physical actor was Doug Jones, and the one who voiced the character was Laurence Fishburne. At the beginning, the production team was not sure if the Silver Surfer will have a dialogue. Fishburne was first chosen to be the voice of Galactus. In the finality, Galactus was not given a talking physical form but merely a cloudlike shape, and Fishburne eventually ended up voicing the Silver Surfer. One additional trivia – Doug Jones once worked as a contortionist.

Naging best-selling Nintendo 64 game ito (2003) at pangalawang pinaka-popular na game sa Wii virtual console (2007).

          Noong May 5, 2011, ang Super Mario 64 ay napili bilang isa sa 80 video games ng Smithsonian American Art Museum bilang bahagi ng “The Art of Video Games” exhibit.

          One of the most successful actresses of the silent film era is Janet Gaynor (1906-1984). In 1928, Gaynor was the first to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayals in the films Seventh Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) and Street Angel (1928). Her success and fame continued to the onset of the talking films, and her performance in A Star is Born (1937) was unforgettable. Gaynor belongs to a rare breed of film artists that succeeded during the film industry’s transformation.           Helen Dryden (1887-1981) was an American artist and industrial designer that ventured in the field of fashion in the early part of the 20th century. In the beginning, she was rejected by fashion magazines, including Vogue. Her works and illustrations were severely criticized. When American publisher Conde Montrose Nast (1873-1942) took over management of Vogue, and saw Dryden’s illustrations, he immediately ordered the editors to find her. That was the beginning of Dryden’s career in Vogue as cover and fashion illustrator that lasted 13 years.
