          Among the celebrities that graced the covers of magazines, Angel Locsin undoubtedly stand out far above the rest. For more than a decade, she is the favorite of publishers to be the cover girl of their magazines, and, as such, has the most number of covers to date.

LOOK-ALIKES ON THE COVERS

        Browsing through hundreds, no thousands, of magazine covers, I found similarities of how the covers were presented, the angles, the features, and of course the persons on the cover. Yes, the persons on the covers that seemingly the mirror image of another – look-alikes.

        Since my high school days, I ostensibly developed some kind of mental retentivity. Recalling things that I have seen is a part of this. Using this ability, I tried collecting the images of magazine covers with similar features. Believe me, there are many.

          Sometimes, the right posture, the instance of smile, the aura of the eyes, the twitch of the dimples, the correct angle, blend together and the camera can capture conjunctions between two entirely different images, but are set aside until someone discovers them. Here, if we do not know them, Angel Locsin could be mistaken as Lovi Poe’s sister, vice versa.

          Next is a similarity already known, Angel Locsin and Glaiza de Castro. The latter, if I’m not mistaken, used to play Locsin’s double when she was still with GMA 7. Though, the angle of the camera and facial mood still need to be aligned to produced a believable look-alike.

          Is it possible to string up a chain of look-alikes? Let’s start with Angel Locsin. Her face is quite uniquely beautiful, but again with the right facial angle and posture, Andi Eigenmann can be a perfect look-alike.

          Next we connect Andi Eigenmann with Michelle Madrigal with a gaze and slightly daring lips. Ohh la la!

          Ah, we’ve managed to make a “look-alike” connection between ladies who couldn’t have possibly have been look-alikes, and a string at that. The wonders of magazine covers. For the perfect finale, Georgina Wilson connects with Katrina Law with an anxious look.

This article, “Darna! The Evolution of a Superheroine” (pp. 14-15) was written barely a month after the hit GMA 7 television series Darna, which starred Angel Locsin. Had the publisher and editor used a Darna/Angel Locsin cover instead of the one above like what I suggested, the magazine would have sold like hotcakes. The “chair,” a simple piece of furniture can be an interesting source of fascination. Think that the mere resting place of man’s buttocks – the salumpuwit in Tagalog – could become the “Seat of (his) Power” (pp. 46, 47, 49). The sidebar “Did Ferdinand Magellan Really Bring the First Chair to the Philippines?” (p. 51) is equally enlightening.
