Agosto 26 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Agosto 26, 1896, unang iwinagayway ng mga Katipunero sa pamumuno ni Andres Bonifacio ang watawat ng Katipunan.

          Ipinasa ng Philippine Commission ang Act No. 854 noong Agosto 26, 1903.  Ang batas na ito ang nagpapahintulot sa mga Filipino scholars na makapag-aral sa America.

          Ang Communist Party of the Philippines ay itinatag ni Crisanto Evangelista noong Agosto 26, 1930. Makalipas ang walong taon, nakipagkaisa ito sa Socialist Party ni Pedro Abad Santos. Noong panahon ng pananakop ng mga Hapon sa Pilipinas, binuo nila ang Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap) na naging pangunahing kapisanang guerilla sa Luzon. Ang partidong ito ay muling itinatag ni Jose Maria Sison.

          Sa araw na ito – Agosto 26, 2012 – ang Philippine basketbal team na Smart Gilas 2 ay nagwagi ng kampeonato sa Jones Cup matapos talunin ang koponan ng United Satates 76-75. Ito ang ikaapat na pagkakataon na napagwagian ng koponan ng Pilipinas ang Jones Cup; ang huli ay noong 1998.

Si “Juan de la Cruz”

          Alam niyo ba na ang karakter na si Juan de la Cruz ay hindi likha ng isang Filipino? Ang “Juan de la Cruz” ay pangalang-sagisag na karaniwang ginagamit para sa mamamayang Filipino gaya ng ang “Uncle Sam” ay sumasagisag sa isang Amerikano. Ginagamit din itong katumbas ng “John Doe” patungkol sa isang bangkay na lalaki na hindi kilala.

          Ang karakter na ito ay likhang-isip ng Scottish-born journalist na si Robert McCulloch Dick (1873-1961). Una niya itong nabanggit nang siya ay isang reporter na nagsusulat sa The Manila Times noong 1905, matapos madiskubre na ang pinakakaraniwang pangalang natatala sa mga police blotters at court dockets sa Manila at sa mga kalapit nitong lungsod ay “Juan.” Inangkupan naman niya ito ng apelyidong “de la Cruz” dahil sa nakita niyang pagiging relihiyoso ng mga Filipino.

          Noong August 26, 1908, unang nakita ang caricature ni “Juan de la Cruz” sa pahina Philippine Free Press na nabili ni McCulloch Dick mula kay W. A. Kincaid. Ang caricaiture, na unang iginuhit ni Jorge Pineda, ay larawan ng isang lalaking nakasuot ng salakot, camisa de chino at nakapaa. Sa makabagong panahon, napalitan ng Barong Tagalog ang kaniyang suot at nagkaroon ng tsinelas o sapatos ang kaniyang mga paa.

          Sa kasaysayan naman ng mga santong Katoliko, mayroong isang nagngangalang Juan de la Cruz na naging santo. Siya ay isang Spanish mystic na naging pangunahing pigura sa Catholic Reformation.

1906 – Ceferino Garcia, champion professional boxer and inventor of the “Bolo punch” – in Naval, Biliran (formerly part of Leyte) (d. January 1, 1981).

Ang Hara-Siri ni Gregorio C. Coching

na isinulat at iginuhit ni Gregorio C. Coching,

          Ang mala-epikong kuwentong “Hara-Siri” ay kathang isinulat at iginuhit ni Gregorio C. Coching tungkol sa isang Muslim Sultanate noong panahon ng Madjapahit Empire sa Asia. Si Hara-Siri ay isang anak ng tulisang-dagat na Turko na naging isang malupit na sultana. Umibig siya kay Ramdit Arawari, na anak ni Sultan Marikudo, ang naghahari sa mga lupaing nasasakupan ng emperyo ng Madjapahit. Unang lumabas ang kuwentong ito sa mga pahina ng Tagalog Klasiks Blg.22 noong Mayo 6, 1950 at nagtapos noong Agosto 26, 1950.

The Tallest Superman

          Christopher Reeve (1952-2004) is the third Hollywood actor to portray the role Superman. He first donned the costume of the “Man of Steel” in Superman (1977), which was followed by three sequels. The last, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), he directed himself. Reeve, with a height of 6’-4” (1.93-meter), is the tallest Hollywood actor to play the role of Superman.

          American-born actress Mia Farrow (real name María de Lourdes Villiers Farrow) is the daughter of film director John Farrow and actress Maureen O’Sullivan. She was first married to singer-actor Frank Sinatra in 1966, but it lasted only two years. Sinatra wanted her to stop making the controversial film Rosemary’s Baby (1968), and instead join him in the film The detective. Farrow refused, so in the actual set of Rosemary’s Baby, Sinatra gave her their divorce papers.

The American magazine People Weekly was first released into circulation on March 4, 1974, with actress Mia Farrow, then starring for the film The great Gatsby, on the premier issue cover.
The magazine features human-interest stories, news about celebrities and insights into their lifestyles.
The concept of the magazine is attributed to Andrew Heiskell, former Time Inc. chief executive officer and publisher of another weekly magazine, Life.
Time Inc. invested 40-million-dollar into the venture and was able to "break even" in 18 months.
Today, People Weekly is widely popular for its featured lists that it releases annually: "Most Beautiful People," "The Best Dressed," and "The Sexiest Man Alive."

 

 

 

Events that happened on March 4

1578 – Spanish Governor-General Francisco de Sande with 40 vessels and a force of 400 Spaniards, 1,500 Filipinos, and about 400 Borneans began the conquest of Brunei.

1890 – The San Miguel Brewery was founded by Enrique Maria Barretto de Ycasa.

1977 – President Ferdinand Marcos issued a decree creating the Bangsa Moro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao composed of 13 provinces.

Picture Trivia

          Long before the Star Wars films and the U.F.O. television series, there was already Star Trek, an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991). In the original series, which started on September 8, 1966 , viewers followed the space adventures in the 23rd century of Captain James Tiberius Kirk (played by William Shatner) and his First Officer, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the officers and crew of the Starship Enterprise. The original series lasted for three seasons on NBC until April 4, 1969.

          Do you know that Roddenberry proposed his “galactic federation of planets” in 1964? At the start, the network rejected the idea that the crew of the Enterprise will come from different races of people, but Roddenberry insisted on it.
