FIRST ISSUES


FIRST ISSUES

          It’s the first of July, my birth month. I’m itching to post something! I thought, it should be something connected to me. Ah yes! The first of my birth month, so I’m posting the covers of the First Issues of my magazine collections.
          I have already previously posted some of them in this same blog together with my collections of Philippine komiks first issues on the particular day they were released.
          Among those published in the Philippines are the following:

MEN’S EDGE
          Supermodel Abbygale Arenas on the first front cover of this men’s magazine. Contains articles particularly for men, from cars, high-tech gadgets and guns to good grooming, actions and adventures (SEE more information about it on June 1, 2012 post).

THE GOOD LIFE
          On the first cover of this magazine are “happy” masks, the photo was courtesy of the Department of Tourism. Contains as its subtitle connotes, “brightest ideas, best buy,” trivia, facts, stories, anecdotes, news, and everything else (SEE more information about it on June 5, 2012 post).

TV STAR
          Hollywood actors Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet (a scene in the film Titanic) are on the front cover, and Maricel Soriano (for the Green Cross alcohol print ad) on the back cover of the premier issue of this film and entertainment magazine, and TV guide. Contains celebrity news, profiles, film and television reviews, and program schedules for both free TV and cable (SEE more information about it on December 1, 2012 post).

FHM PHILIPPINES
          Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone graced the cover of the first issue and, on the second issue, Sunshine Cruz became the first Filipina cover girl of this magazine. Contains sexy picture, sex advisory columns, “true” stories and confessions of sexual encounters, and articles on varied subjects mostly catering to male interest and predisposition.

GM (Short for Gentlemen’s Magazine. I’m certainly a gentleman!)
          On the front cover are the rather interlocked bodies of Stella L. and Monica Montes, and on the flip-up back cover are Mark Anthony Fernandez and Rica Peralejo. Contains sexy picture (some breast exposures and nudes), spicy interviews and write-ups about starlets, and stills of adult films.

18 (I’m 99.9 percent sure it represent the age)
          Sexy model and actress Tracy Torres graced the front cover of the first issue of this men’s magazine, and Maye Tongko at the back cover. Contains sexy pictures, lists (such as “10 Most Fantasized Female Star”), erotica, trivia, sex jokes, sex-related articles (SEE more information about it on September 8, 2012 post).

Ang pahayagang tabloid na Bulgar (Boses ng Masa, Mata ng Bayan) ay unang lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong Disyembre 2, 1991.


Disyembre 2 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Disyembre 2, 1899, ang mga sundalong Filipino, humigit-kumulang 60 ang bilang, na pinamumunuan ni Heneral Gregorio del Pilar, ay magiting na nakipaglaban sa mahigit 300 kawal-Amerikano sa pamumuno ni Major Peyton March, sa Pasong Tirad, Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. Kung hindi sa tulong ng isang mamamatnubay na katutubo, hindi matatagpuan ang isang lihim na lagusan patungo sa kinaruroonan ng mga sundalong Filipino na naging dahilang ng kanilang pagkalupig. Nasawing lumalaban si Heneral Del Pilar, ang bayani ng tinaguriang “Battle of Tirad Pass.”

          Ang Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI) ay itinatag bilang isang partido politikal sa pakikipagkolaborasyon sa Japaneses military authority sa Manila noong Disyembre 2, 1942. Si Jorge Vargas ang pangulo ng partido samantalang si Benigno S. Aquino Sr naman ang director-general. Ang partidong ito ang pumili kay Jose P. Laurel upang maging pangulo ng Pilipinas sa panahon ng pananakop ng mga Hapon.

GLIMPSE FROM THE PAST
The 18-year-old Sue Lyon (around four years after she made the film Lolita),
on the cover of Gent (December 1964).
Lyon was around 15 years old when the film was shown in theaters in 1962.
For her portrayal, she won the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.
When Lyon tried to see the movie, she was not allowed to enter the theater because she was a minor.

1930 – Jesus T. Tanchanco, marketing expert, businessman, lawmaker, and Minister of Food – in Bulacan (d. April 14, 2014).

Ang “Anak ni Zuma”
Ang nobelang-komiks na “Anak ni Zuma”
ni Jim Fernandez na iginuhit ni Ben Maniclang,
tampok sa taklob-pahina ng Aliwan Komiks
(Disyembre 2, 1976).
          Isa sa pinakamahabang serye sa komiks ang “Anak ni Zuma” na tumagal ng humigit-kumulang walong taon. Ito ay likha ni Jim Fernandez at iginuhit ni Ben Maniclang para sa Aliwan Komiks (1976-1984). Ang kuwento ay pagpapatuloy ng naunang serye ni Fernandez na Zuma. Ang mga pangunahing karakter sa kuwentong ito bukod sa taong-ahas na si Zuma ay ang mga anak niya. Si Galema, ang babaeng anak ni Zuma na mayroon ding nakakabit na ahas sa magkabilang panig ng kaniyang leeg. May mabuting kalooban si Galema na taliwas sa kaniyang ama. Ito ay dahil may dugong tao siya, lumaki sa piling ng mga nag-ampon sa kaniyang sina Philip at Isabel, at nagmahal at nagkaasawa, si Morgan. Si Dino, ang lalaking anak ni Zuma na may katawang tao at ulo ng isang malaking ahas. Bukod dito, may isa pang kakambal si Galema, ang puting ahas na sa maraming pagkakataon ay katulong niya.
          Isina-pelikula ang Anak ni Zuma (1987) ng Cine Suerte Inc. bilang sequel ng naunang pelikulang Zuma na ginampanan ni Max Laurel sa ilalim ng direksyon ni Ben S. Yalung. Si Jenny Lyn ang gumanap bilang Galema at si Sonny Erang bilang Dino. Si Laurel pa rin ang gumanap bilang Zuma. Ang iba pang  kasama sa pelikula ay sina Rey PJ Abellana (bilang Morgan), Mark Gil (bilang Philip) at Dang Cecilio (bilang Isabel).

          Who would not know the Hollywood celebrity Jennifer Aniston? Especially when you mentioned the TV series Friends and the films Bruce Almighty (2003) and Break-Up (2006). Do you know that she was also acclaimed for her portrayals in indie films? Among these are She’s the One (1996), Office Space (1999), The Good Girl (2002) and Friends with Money (2006).

Ang Buwan ng Disyembre
          Ang December o disyembre and ikalabingdalawa at panghuling buwan ng taon sa Gregorian Calendar. Bagama’t ang tawag na December ay halaw sa salitang Latin na decem na ang ibig sabihin ay “sampu,” dahil ito ang pangsampung buwan sa sinaunang Roman Calendar.
          Para sa mga Filipino ang Disyembre ang pinakamasayang buwan ng taon dahil sa pagdiriwang ng tradisyunal na Kapaskuhan, at sa huling gabi ng Disyembre idinaraos din ang pagsalubong sa Bagong Taon.
          Ang poinsettia na halamang ginagawang palamuti sa Kapaskuhan ang karaniwang itinuturing na sagisag ng buwan ng Disyembre. Ang mga natatangi namang “bulaklak ng buwan” ay ang holly at mistletoe, samantalang ang turquoise at zircon ang mga “hiyas ng buwan” o birthstones.

Ang unang isyu ng TV Star (December 1, 1999)

Ang unang isyu ng TV Star ay opisyal na lumabas noong December 1, 1999, bagama’t nauna na itong lumabas sa sirkulasyon noong November 22, 1999. Inilimbag ito ng Atlas Publishing Co., Inc. Sa unang isyu, si Eden Carlos ang nakatalang editor nito at ng mga sumunod na labas ay si Imelda G. Cardel na ang editor. Naglalaman ito ng mga artikulo tungkol sa mga artista, pelikula, programa sa television at schedules ng mga palabas sa free TV at cable channels.






 



Sa paglipas ng panahon, nagpabago-bago ang pamagat ng magazine na ito. Ang TV Star ay naging Star TV Guide noong January 2003, TV Star Sky Cable Guide noong June 2005 at TV Star Guide noong June 2006. Mula January 2009 hanggang sa kasalukuyan, tinawag na itong Atlas TV Guide.

Disyembre 1 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Disyembre 1, 1984, nagsimula ang Light Railway Transit (LRT) system sa pagserbisyo sa publiko mula sa Baclaran hanggang sa central station nito malapit sa Manila City Hall. Ito ang kauna-unahang mass transit system sa Pilipinas at isa sa mga landmark projects ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos na nagsisilbing konkretong bantayog para sa mamamayang Filipino.

1874 – Luis Guerrero, doctor and professor of medicine who pioneered the study of tropical diseases like beri-beri – in Ermita, Manila (d. August 12, 1950).
1926 – Onofre D. Corpuz, socio-political scientist, economist, historian, academician, government official and National Scientist (2004) – in Poblacion, Camiling, Tarlac – (d. March 23, 2013).

1951 – Philip Cezar, basketball player known as “The Scholar” and 1980 PBA-MVP – in Manila.

Picture Trivia
          The name Suzanne Cloutier may not ring a bell to an ordinary movie enthusiast. She is a Canadian-born French actress that portrayed the character Desdemona in the 1952 film adaptation of Othello by Orson Welles. In 1953, she met Peter Ustinov while doing the play No Sign of the Dove. Two years later, Ustinov married Cloutier,  and they had three children – Andrea, Igor at Pavla – but they divorced in 1971.
