Si Malakas at Si Maganda and Other (Filipino) Epic Love Sories

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 23 No. 40, February 15, 2000
On the cover: Onemig Bondoc and Jannette McBride

Published in the love month of 2000, “Si Malakas at Si Maganda and Other Epic Love Stories,” is a glimpse into the rich Philippine legends and folklores about the first man and woman, fated romances and soulmates.

“Then the LORD GOD made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, He took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the flesh. He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. Then the man said, ‘at last, here is one of my own kind – bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. Woman is her name because she was taken out of man.’” – Genesis 2:21-23, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

Coins, Coins, No More Confusing Coins?

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 20 No. 37, January 21, 1997
On the cover: Onemig Bondoc and Ciara Sotto

The Philippines has recently introduced new coins in circulation. This article, “Coins, Coins, No More Confusing Coins?” that I wrote 21 years ago may serve as a timely backgrounder. It was written during the time – post Cory Aquino regime – when to many different coins were in circulation, and when the buying value of the coins was at its worst. (SEE also “Collecting coins” in MOD (June 17, 1994)

“When a man is too lazy to repair his roof, it will leak, and the house will fall in. Feasting makes you happy and wine cheers you up, but you can’t have either without money.” – Ecclesiastes 10:18-19, The Good News Bible in Today’s English Version.

More for the trivia collectors, this time about the Holloween.

“Be on your guard; let no one capture your minds with hollow and delusive speculations, based on traditions of human teaching and centered on the elemental spirits of the universe and not on Christ.” – The Letter of Paul to the Colossians 2:8, The Revised English Bible.
