FIRST ISSUES

 

          It’s the first of July, my birth month. I’m itching to post something! I thought, it should be something connected to me. Ah yes! The first of my birth month, so I’m posting the covers of the First Issues of my magazine collections.

          I have already previously posted some of them in this same blog together with my collections of Philippine komiks first issues on the particular day they were released.

          Among those published in the Philippines are the following:

MOVIE FAN

          Actress Barbara Perez on the first cover, this magazine contains news, stories and articles about movie stars in particular and the film industry in general (SEE more information about it on April 14, 2012 post).

POGI (Filipino colloquial word for “handsome”)

          I don’t know the name of the lady in the jungle-motif bikini, nor the lion. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it if you post it here. It contains sexy pictures, essays, stories and komiks about sex and sexuality, but not vulgar (SEE more information about it on April 3, 2012 post).

Pogi Magazine for Men (April 3, 1969).

BARAKO (Slang for “stud” like its subtitle, which translates to “genuine men’s magazine”)

          Who’s the woman in the cover? I don’t know. I’ve sold this one already. Contains erotica, articles about and komiks depicting sex.

TOPSTAR PIP (That’s Tirso Cruz III movie nickname during the 1970s)

          Tirso Cruz III, Edgar Mortiz and Vilma Santos on the cover of this movie and entertainment magazine (This was actually my former yaya’s magazine). Contains stories and gossips about, inside and around celebrities, films and the film industry.

Focus Philippines

          This magazine went into circulation just a few months after the declaration of martial law, with its cover (raised hand with a broken chain) and featured article (“Emancipation 1972” by Blas F. Ople) reminiscent and symbolic of freedom (from foreign dictates). On the background is the Declaration of Martial Law in President Ferdinand Marcos’ own handwriting (SEE more information about it on November 18, 2012 post).

ATOMEDIA PHILIPINES

          On the cover of this first magazine in the Philippines about atomic energy is a very simplified representation of an atomic burst. This came into being to streamline the nuclear energy program of the Marcos government, educated the public, and serve as forum for articles and discussion regarding nuclear energy. It became the publication of the Atomic Energy Commission.

          Actress Elizabeth Oropeza on the first front cover of the magazine, stuffing a stuff toy on his front stuffs. Contains sexy pictures, public interest articles, more or less, directly or indirectly connected to sex (SEE more information about it on November 30, 2012 post).

Scene Magazine (November 30, 1982).

Aglow (as in radiance of color, spirit and emotion)

          Ten-year-old Bernadette E. Salas on the cover of this magazine, in my book, one of the best first issue covers I’ve seen. Contains trivia, essays and articles about Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular vulgar (SEE more information about it on September 23, 2012 post).

PHILIPPINE GRAPHIC (Indeed!)

          On the premier cover is one unique “graphic” illustration titled Independence: An Endangered Species: A woman seemingly crucified (more like afloat with her hands tied); looking upward with her visually decapitated head attached to her neck; her left breast exposed apparent to breastfeeding a child also floating infront of her. A dovelike silhouette can also be seen emanating from the child’s head. Notice that at the back of the woman is the Philippine flag with its red portion on the left side signifying that the country is in the state of war. On the background are intertwining depiction of hardship and struggle (SEE more information about it on June 18, 2012 post).

This article “Video Game Addiction: Don’t Get Hooked” (pp. 10-11) is more than 20 years old, but its essence is still applicable in today’s time.

Also in this magazine issue is my first “Folly Tickling” column (p. 28), which I wrote for Celebrity World magazine under the penname Galen Sta. Rowena.

FIRST ISSUE

In April 1957 the first issue of a monthly magazine in the Philippines with a title of Movie Fan came off the press. It contained news, stories and articles about movie stars in particular and the film industry in general. Actress Barbara Perez was its first cover girl.

The magazine Celebrity World, on the other hand, is a weekly publication of Mass Media Publishing Corporation. It contained articles about showbiz, lifestyle, art and culture, both on the local and international scene. Its first editor-in-chief and editor are Eliseo C. Taparan and Leonila R. Garcia respectively. The magazine was an offshoot of Movie Fan that underwent a facelift and broadened the scope of its contents.

The first issue that contained the title “Celebrity World” on its cover (although the logo and name Movie Fan was still included) appeared on February 17, 1994 for which Kris Aquino was the cover girl. The transition period continued up to the April 7, 1994 issue (Kristine del Rosario on the cover). The superscript “Movie Fan” was finally removed on the April 14, 1994 issue (Ina Raymundo on the cover). This is the legitimate first issue of Celebrity World.

UNANG LABAS

Si Flash Bomba ay orihinal na fictional superhero na katha ni Mars Ravelo at ay unang iginuhit ni Jim Fernandez at pagkatapos ay ni Nestor Malgapo. Una itong lumabas sa Tagalog Klasiks noong Abril 14, 1967.

Matapos likhain ni Mars Ravelo ang mga komiks character na Darna, Captain Barbell, Lastikman, Dyesebel, Bodying, Goro at Booma, naisip niyang lumikha naman ng isang higit na kakaibang obra, isang tinagurian niyang “fantastic character” na “pambihira at espesyal” na tinitiyak niyang kagigiliwan ng mambabasa.

Ang pangunahing tauhan ng kuwento ay si Roldan na bagama’t anak-mayaman ay isang lumpo dahil sa sakit na polio. Itinaya niya sa pakikipagsapalaran ang kaniyang buhay upang makakuha ng tatlong ginintuang buhok ng tikbalang upang mabago ang kaniyang kapalaran at matupad ang pangarap na maging isang crime fighter. Nagtagumpay siya at kalakip ng kapangyarihang taglay ng mga ginintuang buhok, nagawa niyang magbagong-anyo bilang Flash Bomba. Sa kaanyuan ni Flash Bomba, lumaki ang kaniyang mga palad at mga paa at nakalalakad siya kahit sa gilid ng mga pader. Bukod dito, natatawag niya ang isang kawan ng kabayong bundok at ang tikbalang sa sandaling kailanganin niya ang tulong ng mga ito.

Events that happened on April 14:

1617 – The Spanish fleet led by Juan Ronquillo defeated the Dutch fleet led by Admiral John Derickson in the Second Battle of Playa Honda off the coast of Zambales, averting another Dutch attack on the Philippines.

1898 – General Arcadio Maxilom, who took over command of the Katipuneros in Cebu after the assassination of Leon Kilat, successfully defeated the Spanish forces and captured the Tuburan town.

1947 – The first issue of Bulaklak (Hiyas ng Tahanan) was released by the Social & Commercial Press owned by Beatriz M. de Guballa.

1980 – The KADIWA Program, a brainchild project of then First Lady Imelda Marcos where low-income households can buy commodities five to 30 percent cheaper direct from the producers, was inaugurated at the Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI) Complex in Taguig.

1935 – Rodolfo Gaspar Biazon, AFP chief of staff, government official and lawmaker – in Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

1980 – Cheska Garcia (real name Francesca Marie Velasco Garcia), actress, model and television host – in Dagupan, Pangasinan.

Picture Trivia

          Do you know that the beautiful and sexy actress Jessica Alba was asthmatic as a child? The portrayer of Susan Storm (a.k.a. the Invisible Woman) in the films Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) overcome her weakness through the guidance of her mother, who taught her to swim and dive underwater before she was able to learn to walk. Alba soon became a PADI-certified scuba diver at a very young age, and starred as Maya Graham (1995-1997) in the television series Flipper. She started to be known when she was chosen (out of 1,200 who auditioned) to portray the character Max Guevarra, a genetically-engineered super-soldier in the TV series Dark Angel. Here, she won the 2001 Teen Choice Award for Choice Actress and Saturn Award for Best Actress, and was nominated for the Golden Globe.
