UNANG LABAS
Ang makabayang pahayagang El Grito del Pueblo na itinatag ni Pascual Poblete ay unang nabasa noong Agosto 23, 1899. Layon ng pahagang ito na ipahayag ang marubdob na hangarin ng mga Filipino na magkaroon ng kalayaan mula sa pananakop ng mga Amerikano.


Agosto 23 sa Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas

          Noong Agosto 23, 1896, ang mga Katipuneros sa pamumuno ni Gat Andres Bonifacio ay nagpunit ng kanilang mga cedula bilang sagisag ng kanilang padtutol sa pamahalaang Kastila, at ito ang naging simula ng Himagsikan ng mga mamamayan sa Pilipinas laban sa Espanya. Sa simula tinawag itong “Sigaw ng Balintawak” subalit nang lumaon ay pinalitan ng mga mananaliksik ng kasaysayan at ginawang “Sigaw ng Pugadlawin” dahil naganap ito sa isang sitio sa Balintawak na tinatawag na Pugalawin.

          Ang mga Thomasites, ang pinakamalaking pangkat ng mga gurong Amerikano ay dumating sa Pilipinas noong Agosto 23, 1901. Binansagan silang “Thomasites” mula sa pangalang ng barkong nagdala sa kanila sa Pilipinas, ang U.S.S. Thomas.

          Noong Agosto 23, 1907, ipinag-utos ng pamahalaan ng mga mananakop na Amerikano ang pagbabawal ng pagtataas at pagpupugay sa watawat ng Pilipinas.

          Ang unang pelikulang ginawa sa Pilipinas – ang La Vida de Rizal (“Buhay ni Rizal”) ay ipinalabas sa Grand Opera House noong Agosto 23, 1912. Ang humigit-kumulang isang oras na pelikula ay pinatnugutan at binuo ni Harry Brown mula sa script na sinulat ni Edward Meyer Gross. Si Honorio Lopez ang gumanap bilang Gat Jose Rizal.

          Itinatag ang University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) noong Agosto 23, 1938. Ang mga orihinal na kasapi ng liga ay ang University of the Philippines (U.P.), University of Santo Tomas (U.S.T.), Far Eastern University (F.E.U.) at National University (N.U.).

          Noong Agosto 23, 2010, nangyari ang Manila Hostage Crisis kung saan walong turistang taga-Hong Kong ang napatay nang sugurin at walang habas paputukan ng mga otoridad ang bus na kinaruroonan ng mga turistang hostage at ng hostage taker na si Rolando Mendoza, isang nagpoprotestang police officer.

1848 – Felipe Buencamino Sr, member of Emilio Aguinaldo’s cabinet and Civil Service commissioner during the American Occupation – in San Miguel, Bulacan (January 6, 1929).
1925 – Alfredo P. Alcala, comic book artist – in Talisay, Negros Occidental (d. April 8, 2000).
1932 – Eddie Rodriguez (real name Luis Clemente Enriquez), actor ad director – in Zamboanga City (d. October 12, 2001).
1952 – Gabby Lopez (full name Eugenio Gabirel La'O Lopez III), businessman and corporate chief executive – in Manila.
1972 – Bal David (full name Bal Viray David Jr), professional pasketball player – in Cubao, Quezon City.

Picture Trivia
          Many auditioned for the role of Charlene “Charlie” McGee, the Firestarter, an unusual young girl with pyrokinesis, the ability to create fire by merely thinking of it. Among them Jennifer Connelly, Taylor Neff and Bridgette Andersen, but Drew Barrymore was chosen. She was only eight years old when she made the film Firestarter (1984), adapted from a novel of Stephen King with the same title.

1896 – Dr. Pio Valenzuela, secretary of the Katipunan, left for Dapitan on board the inster-island steamer Venus to confer with Jose Rizal, who is on exile, regarding the planned revolution.
1898 – Miguel Malvar was promoted to the rank of General after returning from Hong Kong
1948 – Dumaguete (capital of Negros oriental) was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 327.
1950 – Cagayan de Oro (capital of Misamis Oriental) and Butuan (capital of Agusan del Norte) were declared cities by virtue of Republic Act no. 521 and 523 respectively.
1968 – Iriga (in Camarines Sur) was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 5261, and General Santos (capital of South Cotobato) was declared a city by virtue of Republic Act Nos. 5412.

          Noong 1995 lumabas sa tatlong pelikula si Drew Barrymore – Boys on the Side, Mad Love at Batman Forever – at nagkaroon ng guest appearance sa Late Show with David Letterman, kung saan sumampa si Barrymore sa lamesa ni Letterman at iniladlad ang kaniyang dibdib (nakatalikod sa camera at paharap kay Letterman) bilang pagbati sa kaarawan ng host. Nang taon ding yaon binuo ni Barrymore at ng kaniyang business partner na si Nancy Juvonen ang Flower Film, isang film production company. Ang unang pelikulang ginawa nila ay ang Never Been Kissed (1999) na sinundan ng Charlie’s Angel (2000), na naging isang major blockbuster.

1603 – Second great fire engulfed Manila. The first happened 20 years earlier on March 19, 1583.
1901 – The so-called “Republic of Negros” was abolished making it a regular province.
1937 – A national plebiscite on women’s right to suffrage was held, the results of which gives women the right to vote and hold public office.

          Alam niyo ba na ang sikat na Hollywood actress na si Drew Barrymore ay lumabas sa mga cameo roles? Noong 1995, sa pelikulang Batman Forever (1995), nagkaroon ng cameo appearance si Barrymore bilang isa sa mga babae ng kontrabidang si Two-Face na nagngangalang Sugar, at nang sumunod na taon, lumabas din siya sa isang lead cameo sa pelikulang horror na Scream (1996).
          Kadalasang namang mga pelikulang may temang romantic comedy ang kaniyang pinagbibidahan, katulad ng Wishful Thinking (1996), Best Men (1997), The Wedding Singer (1998), Home Fries (1998), at Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998). Noong 1998, lumabas din siya bilang si Ariadne sa isang episode (“Hercules and the Minotaur”) ng TV series na Hercules.
