Issues That Have the Potentials to Become Very Valuable

 

          Among my collection of Philippine magazines, except for the truly vintage (more than half a century old as of this posting) and first issues, which are already posted in this blog, I find the following as prime collectibles, some presently having high collectibility value and others having potentials for future value increments.

          Mr. & Ms. magazine featured many love teams, lovers, and love partners on it’s covers. Do you think those are worth collecting? Definitely! Especially those that have colorful and spicy anecdotes behind the relationship. Star-crossed lovers? That’s on the top of the list. Of course, there are also relationships that are said to be “made in heaven” and couples on such magazine covers are also highly collectible.

 

STAR-CROSSED LOVERS

Mr. & Ms. Vol. 19 No. 40, February 6, 1996,
with Rustom Padilla and Carmina Villaroel on the cover.

          First on the list is the Mr. & Ms. February 6, 1996 issue featuring Rustom Padilla and Carmina Villaroel. The story behind this one literally shocked many people and I need not tell it. It’s public knowledge. This issue contains story about Rustom Padilla and Carmina Villaroel, at the starting point, where everything was smooth and nice between them. Before the marriage, before the intrigues, before the separation, the marriage annulment,  and the transformation. Long before Carmina Villaroel married another, Zoren Legaspi, and had her twins. Long before Rustom Padilla abandoned his matinee idol and action star image and turned into a transgender known as BB Gandanghari. The collectibility value of this one is off the scale.

          Jomari Yllana and Aiko Melendez appeared many times on the covers of Mr. & Ms., twice with their son Andre, but this one was at the time when they were just friends, just starting to feel the love for each other. There you go, that’s the intrinsic factor! Aside from that, this Mr. & Ms. May 7, 1996 issue coincided with the magazine’s 20th anniversary. So, that even padded the value even more. For those collectors who fancy printed ads, this issue is loaded with them.

          A unique relationship and a unique cover, that is the only way to describe it. Ogie Alcasid and Michelle van Eimeren on the cover of Mr. & Ms. October 8, 1996 issue. Though both of them, now, has different love and different family, their unique love story in preserved in this issue. A genuine prime collectible.

          Philippine showbiz aficionados also know the reel and real stories behind the love team of Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal. Marvin was just 18 years old and Jolina, 19, on this Mr. & Ms. January 28, 1997 issue. How time flies! But this issue is like a “time machine” in a collector’s mind. Plus, there is a Jolina Magdangal color print ads (Bobbie Nail Creme) where you see here on skateboard, and an Eight O’Clock Original “Pirates of the Carribean” dice game centerfold.

          Rico Yan (1975-2002) and Claudine Barretto: Theirs was a relationship said to be “beautiful, lovely, magical.” There were even talks of marriage until a tragedy, Rico Yan’s untimely death (17 days after the release of this magazine), broke everything apart. Their happy moments together are captured on the cover and inside story of this Mr. & Ms. March 12, 2002 issue.

          Mr. & Ms. June 11, 2002 “Special Bridal Issue” featured Fil-Am basketball player Rudy Hatfield and actress-comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto on the over. When Rudy and Rufa got back together after some months of separation, many thought they were headed for the altar. The cover was perfect. It, however, didn’t happen. Everything became but memories except for this magazine issue.

          Nyoy Volante once said that he and Nina were “matched vocally and musically.” Did they become lovers? Google it or better yet go back in time and find out. Their happy moments together are recorded in this rare cover and inside story of Mr. & Ms. August 31, 2004 issue.

          Many thought Railey Valeroso and Chynna Ortaleza seen in this Mr. & Ms September 9, 2004 cover, despite the on-and-off relationship, would end-up together as husband and wife. So many interviews, so many write-ups (including the one in this issue), and yet they went separate ways.

          There was a time when Dingdong Dantes and Karylle were an item. Some said that they were “perfect together.” The IMDB (International Movie Database) website even hinted at the time that they were to portray Captain Barbell and Darna together. But in showbiz relationship are so fickle that a seemingly “hot” item can suddenly fizzles out and becomes but a vanishing smoke. The same happened to the planned Mars Ravelo superhero team-up.

Issues That Have the Potentials to Become Very Valuable

 

          Among my collection of Philippine magazines, except for the truly vintage (more than half a century old as of this posting) and first issues, which are already posted in this blog, I find the following as prime collectibles, some presently having high collectibility value and others having potentials for future value increments.

          Let’s start with which cover or, shall we say, which celebrity on the cover has high collectibility value? Angel Locsin, as I posted before has the most number of magazine covers in the Philippines. To the contrary, however, magazines having her on the cover, except for the really special ones (a few shown here), have very little collectibility value.

ANGEL LOCSIN COVERS

          One specific Angel Locsin cover that is highly collectible is the one she did for the Mr. &  Ms. June 8, 2004 issue together with then boyfriend Oyo Boy Sotto when she was just 19 years old. A lot had happened since then but that particular moment is preserved in time in the magazine.

          Another Mr. & Ms. issue (January 18, 2005) that has high collectibility value is the Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez tandem cover which shows them in their costumes for the hit GMA telefantasy series Mulawin. In a few more years, this will reach vintage status and as such will even increase its intrinsic value.

          Of course, when you mentioned Angel Locsin, one cannot forget Darna. She, in fact, was and will perhaps ever will be the “sexiest Darna.” She is featured in MOD August 12, 2005 issue donning the Darna outfit, one of the magazine’s most beautiful covers. That particular issue was sold out. From inside information, however, only 10,000 copies were printed. So, if you have one, take good care of it.

          You’ve seen Angel Locsin in bikinis, gowns, casual attires, sports wears, and Darna and Mulawin costumes, but have you ever seen her in a Chinese-inspired dress? That’s what makes this MOD Chinese New Year issue (January 28, 2005) highly collectible.

 


 

ASSUNTA DE ROSSI COVERS

          Assunta de Rossi used to play and pose “sexy” in movies and magazine pictorials, respectively. Suddenly during her rise to fame, when she was just barely 21 years old, she decided to tie the not with an equally well-known personality, Congressman Jules Ledesma. Then she disappeared from the limelight. Her life’s anecdotes are examples of intrinsic factors that collectors look for. Marked as “Special Collector’s Edition,” the 10 Magazine (Vol. 2 No. 14), released in December 2002, indeed will become a highly valued collectible.

          Published barely five months after the Jules Ledesma–Assunta de Rossi wedding, the Mr. & Ms. May 13, 2003 “Mother’s Day” issue featured Assunta de Rossi with her step children Julio and Cristina Ledesma. This one is truly something worth to keep.

          The colorful but endearing stories of celebrities are intrinsic factors that give collectibility value to a magazine, whether the celebrity is in the cover or in the inside pages. Similar to the color and intrigue of the Assunta de Rossi account is that of Cristina Gonzales. As such, magazines with her on the cover are also deemed prime collectibles. One rare find is her on the cover of a Filipino adult magazine, Wet (Vol. 3 No. 37), though no exact date of printing or release was given (probably in the late 1980s to early 1990s), the intrigues attached to its publication is quite enough to make this one highly collectible. Remember that in 1993, Cristina Gonzales was among those actresses named by then Senator Ernesto Maceda, based on the testimonies of Rosanna Roces, in the alleged diplomatic sex scandal known as “Brunei Beauties.”

          Cristina Gonzales started out as a sweet and demure singer-actress before doing sexy mature roles. Then, again, she found love and disappeared from the limelight of showbiz. Another prime collectible is a MOD Mother’s Day issue (May 14, 2004) featuring her and her daughters Sofia and Diana on the cover.

 

SUPERHEROES ON THE COVER

          As I mentioned in my Collecting Magazines blog post, I collect magazine with cover having the iconic Filipino superheroine Darna. It’s a collector’s favorite theme. Of course, any superhero on the cover gets the same attraction from collectors. In fact, among the most sought after cover for foreign magazine collectors are those vintage ones having early Batman (portrayed by Adam West) and Superman (portrayed by Kirk Alyn or George Reeves) covers. On the local front, more recent magazine having superheroes on the covers also have wanting collectors.

          How about this one, Celebrity World July 31, 1995 issue featuring Batman (portrayed by Val Kilmer)? Yes, this has great potentials, and if you had one, hang on it.

          Though this Mr. & Ms. June 22, 2004 issue is fairly new. It also has potentials as it featured Tobey Maguire (as Spider-Man) and Kirsten Dunst (as Mary Jane Watson).

          I tagged it “Traditional Christmas” because most of us know that December 25 is not really the day of birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It’s the wrong day, month and year of beginning. Christmas around the world, however, have been observed for centuries on this day.

          Daily, weekly and monthly publications follow the same tradition, and their covers speak of the annual event.

          Here are some Philippine magazines with Christmas as the theme or part of the layout of the covers.

          This one, as of this posting, is 71 years old. The Christmas issue of Daigdig (Ang Dating Hiwaga) featuring Tita Duran (Teresita Rigo Durango, 1929-1991), and Jose Perez Vera.
