JOSE
RIZAL ON THE COVERS
I am among those who believe that
heroes should be remembered on their birth date, not on the day they died. Aside,
of course, from book covers, Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, have
been featured in several komiks and magazine covers. Here are a few of them.
On his 92nd birth anniversary, Tagalog Klasiks featured an illustration
of Jose Rizal with a caption: “Isinilang ang isang Rizal upang makintal sa isip
ng kabataan na ang liping kayumanggi’y lahi ng kagitingan....” (A Rizal was
born to instill in the minds of the youth that the brown race is lineage of
heroism....).

On the year of the centennial of
Philippine Independence, Rizal was featured on the cover of a magazine
appropriately titled 1898.

On its Rizal Day issue, Philippine Panorama gave tribute to the
National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

Exactly on Rizal’s 150-year birth
anniversary, the Sunday Inquirer Magazine
featured on its cover a quite different illustration of the Philippine National
Hero title “Rizal Reimagined” by John Paul Cuison.
